Is it possible to get work in Warsaw that pays under the table?

Hi,

I am a 25yo Canadian woman studying in Warsaw. I am going to take polish language classes but thought working would also help me stay social, meet polish, practice the few phrases I know etc. Does anyone know if it is possible for me get work that pays under the table and how I can go about this? Working in a restaurant or something would be what I am aiming for, nothing too glamourous. Anyone have experience finding work like this?

The normal problem is finding work with a legitimate contract; I'm sure bars and restaurants will have no qualms paying you cash. The real issue will be whether you speak Polish, and how much you want to earn; you will be competing with students who work for as little as 5zl/hr.

These jobs exist in Poland but are quite sought after by retired people. Without fluent Polish it would be hard.

But what about the regular expat haunts? Isn't there a bigger chance?

Not really - those jobs would surely go to those 'in the know'.

Are you attractive? Forgive my directness, but the expats only drink out of doors because they want to a) watch a sports event or b) leer at the local ladies. If you can't match or surpass the comeliness of the local Agnieszkas, you don't have any edge over all the others when it comes to bar work.

Hey, I resent that!

I drink outside because I feel like an alcoholic drinking at home ;)

(drinking at a friend's place is fine, but booze just tastes dreadful at home)
