What if I promise to sit on that egg? Think of me as your personal high-altitude brooding butler…

What if I promise to sit on that egg?

gotta talk to the pigeon parents first.

Think of me as your personal high-altitude brooding butler...

that can actually work since the parents often fly away and leave the egg unattended. Just need to get you an internet access on that balcony I think. Smoking is allowed;). I will even serve you a coffee is you sit properly lol ....bring the resume first lol

Update on the egg. Hm....it is mostly white with some brown speckles. I can not take a good look at it since I am afraid to scare the sitting party away. I started to be careful about making the noise in my apartment, so the future baby pigeon would get as much warmth as possible from their parents. I noticed that they take turns.

This egg is a very serious matter at the moment. I am glad it is getting warm outside - for the first time this year I was able to smell spring in the air - this is what is different about Poland in comparison to Canada - the air has a smell - at the moment it smells if coming spring.

Aphro, it is too late now and let the pigeons become parents, but make sure that you throw out the nest as soon as the chick hatches and flies out of the nest. Or, you may have a balcony full of lice. It happened to me once in the past. I enjoyed watching the family of pigeons on the balcony and when they left I sat outside and read a magazine. All of a sudden I started itching and when i looked closely, the balcony was crawling with lice. I ran inside, got a bucket of water with bleach and started washing. You see, most wild birds have lice and they stay in a nest when they have the birds to feed on. When the birds left, the lice started to look for another host.

The pigeons came back next year to make a nest and I was chasing them away for a week or two, and did not allow them to settle on my balcony again. Oh, well... they finally gave up and flew away.

I seem to fight with birds just about every spring. Recently, two sparrows in love discovered that my grill would be just perfect to bring their babies into the world...we have a game now, they bring grass, sprigs, feathers - and i throw them away...I feel bad for them but there are plenty of trees and garages around. My grill is not IT!

oh, this is bad news then. I was planning to use my balcony in the summer, but I have to wait now. I know I cannot chase them away at the moment. It is too late. I visited "pigeon" forums and it appears that it is a wide spread problem in Poland and I have to admit that people come with all kinds of advices - some of them are really funny. I know that the previous resident of my flat allowed the pigeons to breed, so they think it is a safe place.

I hear yah, but the grill is not the place for them lol

We had the same problem, but we also had two robins making a nest over the grill on gutters.

so my husband put a basketball up where the gutter comes down near the grill and it worked!!

The male robin was dive bombing my hubby lol, I said well, you just threw away hours of work
hon, and hes determined to get layed tonight lol..

Having lived in down town, you never would have smelled it. Here in Mississauga, I have smelled the spring. It is going to be a glorious weekend (maybe a passing shower this afternoon).

I live out in the wilds , and at my house the nesting birds are swifts , there are quite a few nests made on the rear wall of my house , but it does not cause me any problems , and i quite like having them around....they keep the insect population down a bit...

In the roof of my house live the bats , again its no problem for me , they don,t bother me , and i don,t bother them....

My garden is very popular with wild boar , and deer , i have one female deer thats been coming close to my house for the last five years , sometimes she brings friends....

Dam... i am going to miss all this when i am in an appartment in the center of Moscow , but thankfully its only for a short while untill we move into a country house....

Good on you, it’s not like one can accuse you of throwing stag parties :)

Ha...! funny enough i have only seen two stags here in Poland....one was a sadly a dead one that had been shot by hunters , the other was a huge beast that slowly sauntered across the road in front of my car just down the road from my farm...

I like living in the country....

you are right, I keep forgetting about that, however I live in a 400 000 city at the moment. I am glad that the weather is springy in your neck of the woods:).

sounds great, I really don't have a problem with those pigeons, yet I want my balcony.

I will keep you updated on the progress.

The youngest wore her vest and a light sweater for the trip to the orthodontist. Bloody marvelous weather! Soon the urban eye-candy will be at their best!

One of the things I loved about Poland was the Polish summers and walking by the river....Brilliant!!!

Weather in Scotland is stunning at the moment, a warm 18c and the mountains look great, wish I was up them today but alas I'm preparing to get ready for a 21st birthday party....I'm going to be one of the oldest there :/

update on pigeons

just checked the nest: the SECOND egg has arrived while I was away.

cholera jasna!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmmmm....... I think I need to hook my gettoblaster and open the balcony doors.

Not in a mood for becoming a pigeon breeder and if I was thinking about career change - this is NOT what I was having in mind.

it means that there might be a 3 rd one coming soon, which leads me to think that I won't be shopping for white eggs for Easter.

use them as mail carriers :)

well, with the way Poczta Polska works, I might consider that in the future.

thanks:)

Noisy next door people.

Well, I have a piano player and I actually don't mind her since she is not that bad. Besides, she doesn't give up and practices for hours often taking breaks for weeks, which is a nice.

Earlier in the thread there was some talk regarding pierogies. I'll be coming to Poland in a few months and I wanted to know if there are any "pierogi-parlors" in Wrocław, Kraków, Zielona Góra or Katowice?
JonnyM 11 | 2,611

Pierogarnia (30+ types of pierogi) has branches in Kraków and Wrocław, and Kraków unfortunately has a Zapiecek which advertises heavily.

Avoid Zapiecek like the plague - the main Warsaw branch has the worst service I've ever seen. Anywhere. After waiting 40 minutes we found our waitress had gone off shift without giving our order to the kitchen - this was only one of the problems. Mediocre food too and expensive.. The other two cities are doubtful, but certainly plenty of restaurants there will do a couple of types of pierogi. There's a cheap place near the station in Zielona Góra that does them, and the posher place almost next door might.

Pierogarnia (again, I know the Warsaw one) is OK.

Pierogarnia: virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Poland/Wojewodztwo_Malopolskie/Krakow-490219/Restaurants-Krakow-Pierogarnia-BR-1.html

Chlopskie Jadło isn't a pierogi place, but they have a few types and are (at least the Warsaw one) very good.

the SECOND egg has arrived while I was away.

I'm not sure what's the usual amount of eggs they lay but it sounds like your balcony will be very busy when the feeding time comes. Get your camera ready and snap some pictures. It sounds like you are pretty much settled and it wasn't too hard...Sometimes I have thoughts of retiring in Poland some day...

I am thinking of removing the nest all together, well before the chicks hatch. I don't want to be stuck with the birds all summer long.
