Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs?

I've been reading comments on this forum and noticed that many of you give a hint that taking drugs in your country is common, wide-spread and socially accepted. Is that impression actually true?

not only. In dopalacze thread there is also lots of hints about it...

Any questions?

How common is it and what drugs are the most popular?

The Poles really upped those stats ;) ;)

Joking aside, yes, drugs are a problem in the UK. Some high-profile cases like that of Leah Betts (MDMA, ecstacy) put people off but only in the immediate aftermath. All Brits???? Of course not!

For me as a teen back then, taking hashish was a natural choice (I only did it a few times, mind). We tend not to have hang-ups to the same level of Poles.

I would say much more common than in Poland.

Marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy are probably the most popular then a smaller number of people do heroin, crack, Meth amphetamine and these are generally seen as harder drugs. (although many people would put cocaine as a hard drug too).

I couldn't say how popular it is now as I'm past all that (in my fourth decade) so not very in touch "wiv da kidz" as they say. ; )

However, in the day, it was fairly common - maybe 20% or so of my contempraries regularly smoked, took mushrooms, acid, speed etc. This was in Ireland by the way.

My impression anyway from talking to Poles here is that it was more widespread than in Poland anyway.

socially accepted.

This bit is wrong though.

Meth amphetamine

Seriously i dont even know what that is.

How common is it and what drugs are the most popular?

meth or amphetamine?

Meth amphetamine and these are generally seen as harder drugs.

Ha that's funny because in Poland amphetamine is consider as a soft drug. Meth is rare in Poland as well but amphetamine is very popular especially as a remedy which helps to learn.

Remember that not all 'drugs' are illegal everywhere; what's illegal in, say, Ireland, isn't necessarily illegal in The Netherlands. Alcohol, always legal in the UK, was highly illegal in the US and (I think) Iceland within living memory and in some other countries even today. Nicotine, legal in most places is illegal in Bhutan. I smoke and drink - in Kuwait or Bhutan I would be an illegal drug-taker.

Speed is to Methamphetamine what cocaine is to crack. it's a harder form of speed.

In the ads I saw, it said that these were mug shots which were taken over a ten year period, when she was caught breaking the law to feed her habit.

You're quite saint then :)

I believe that Poland used to (still does?) produce legal speed for armies, is that true?

??? What for? To give it to soldiers? No. Absolutely not (at least I've never heard of it). Ephedrine is legal and common in many medicines but amphetamine absolutely not. In the USA some agents based on amphetamine are used in the anti ADHD drugs (Adderall, Ritalin)

any time I think of Methamphetamine I think of the ads that were all around London a few years ago.

Yeah I've seen this on YT. Also the meth teeth are famouse atribute of a tweaker. In smoked meth there is ammonia which literally melt your teeth.

It was normal to experiment, Zeti. Brits are surrounded by drugs and it's nothing new. Nepalese Black in yoghurt, yes mam :) It's all about perception and my perception of hashish was that it was mind-enhancing. It was just a phase but, then again, isn't life?

Even our prime minister was smoking mj... you don't need to explain yourself ;)

Speed is methamphetamine.

Anyway, I've done just about everything known to man, stick to alcohol, weed, and psychedelics now (hello Prague!).

Speed is methamphetamine.

In Poland we call that name amphetamine. Other names are feta, białko, władek, amfa.

Anyway, I've done just about everything known to man, stick to alcohol, weed, and psychedelics now (hello Prague!).

Actually the teeth go from grinding them...

USAF pilots get amphetamine pills for their long distance flights.

Methamphetamine is amphetamine based :)

Not in the Czech Republic...or Portugal for that matter. I only indulge in booze here.

Yes.
I don't know if it's true but a couple of people told me.

wow, that would be scandal. I don't think so, in view of that Americans invented much better agent... but it's top secret what exactly it is.

Methamphetamine is amphetamine based :)

yes but it's not the same.

Not in the Czech Republic.

How is Czech for buying a joint, for example? can you buy it in a shop?
Or do you have to know someone?

wow, that would be scandal.

I don't think so, I was told it produces amphetamine for "medical use" in armies abroad.
I am trying to find something on google but I can't, may be it is not true?

That's right, the power of a couple of isomers.

It's just been decriminalized for personal use. Sale is still illegal (like in Holland...). Just walk into any bar in Zizkov and ask your friendly local bartender.

I know that in Vietnam it was given to american soldiers but they stopped to do it soon as those soldiers in a great stress enviroment started to act crazy and get psychosis.

in Vietnam it was given to american soldiers

In Vietnam Americans took heroin which was locally produced.10% of them became permanent heroin addicts.
Amphetamine was first invented in Germany and used by Waffen SS with the blessings of Hitler. An SS soldier could fight for 7 days under the influence of amphetamine without sleep. Now only US military pilots take amphetamine to stand long flights in night.

Same effect can probably be achieved with couple of energy drinks or large amounts of caffeine.

Exactly, it's a nice political move, good PR.

I have to say that from all the drugs, grade A cocaine is the best if you get the good stuff - rocket fuel.....

Speed is dodgy stuff. We only ever took it when we couldn't afford coke. It's rough and nasty and a bad comedown. If coke is champagne, speed is basically Buckfast ; )

Edit:

I have to say that from all the drugs, grade A cocaine is the best if you get the good stuff

Exactly. And providing you don't go mental, you can get up the next day as if nothing has happened.
