As I wrote on tis forum years ago, instead of listening to a governmental/politician BS you should check it yourself at the source. EU citizen can be deported if he/she commits a crime and/or is not working for at least six months.
I don't remember how they phrased it exactly in the EU law but if you cut to the chase - there is a black on white it can be done legally.
All your gov needed to do was to apply this law, not need for Brexit over it. Anyway Brexit is a good thing for Britain.
