And I'd be surprised to hear anybody from my generation in the UK use it. I'd be less surprised to hear it used by my mother's generation and not at all surprised to hear it used by my grandmother's generation.

Harry, what do you suggest? That Rozumiemnić is between 80 and 100 years old?

You hang out with the PC squad , over the weekend I was at the Heineken opener with my mate and his two sons from London 16 & 18, the boys use Mulatto to describe Rihanna, Maybe ask your son Roz, he is probably more in touch with street talk than you are. I have also heard blacks in Warsaw and London refer to mixed race as mulatto.

My grandmother is in her late 80s, the other one (if she'd lived this long) would be in her 90s. I don't recall hearing either of them using that word but they did both spend more than a few years living out in what then was the empire and I do remember the late grandmother saying that some of her staff used to refer to their own kind as 'fuzzy wuzzies' but that she thought they probably did that because most of the other English terms were less than pleasant.

Why don't you try reading my posts and then commenting on what I actually say? Oh, sorry, I forgot that you far prefer to lie about my posts and claim that I said what I did not say. Are you ever going to stop doing that?

I wonder if anyone on the PF ever makes the statistics showing the percentage of your posts which contain words like "lie", "lying", "lier" or "lies". And if so, I wonder what that percetage would exactly be?

The etymology thing is a red herring, Spanish evolved alongside Arabic in Iberia for 800 years of course there was a lot of cross fertilisation. Preferring the Arabic root rather than the Latin root because you consider it less insulting is in its self a tad insulting.

Suarez tried to claim that his use of words towards Evra was not racist because they were Spanish. That was a BS explanation in both Spanish and English, the man knew exactly what he was saying. In the same way mulato is unacceptable in both Spanish and English and has nothing to do with "PC"...whatever that is.

What does Suarez have to do with the etymology Mulatto, you are clutching at straws Barney if people of mixed race wish to identify themselves as Mulatto, respectfully what does it have to do with you. Please stop with the leftest racist diatribe ' Mulatto" is not offensive to anyone in fact more and more people of mixed race are embracing mulatto as a form of identity to be proud of.

That would very much depend on the number of your posts that I reply to.

How surprising that you feel your knowledge is superior to that of Professor of African History at Cornell University, John Clarke. He very clearly thought that using the word mulatto was perfectly acceptable:

There is nothing "leftist" about pointing out that the term is unacceptable and not in common usage in English. Labelling something as "leftist" means nothing there is no call for the proletariat to seize all means of production.

Suarez claimed that his normal Spanish words were acceptable when clearly they were not.

Acceptability depends on context I assumed you knew that (in work cant see video)

1. I can define a word any way I like so long as I use it consistently.
2. The meaning I gave was in the dictionary.
3. Who gave you the right to decide what is or isn't common usage.?

You are not the Authoritative Dictionary of IEEE Standards.

This is true.

Professor of African History at Cornell University, John Clarke. He very clearly thought that using the word mulatto was perfectly acceptable

It is certainly acceptable in a historical context - perhaps to refer to Mary Seacole, Pablo Fanques, or others from a certain part of the world during a certain time period. Providing this is done sensibly and tactfully.

There is nothing "leftist"

Nothing leftist at all. Just good manners to avoid deliberately using a term about somebody that they find offensive. Then again, a certain type of right-winger loves nothing more than to offend, the adult equivalent of smearing **** all over the pushchair (a few of those on here), so perhaps it is leftist in the very best sense.

This is true.

What is the Arabic word for mixed blood, Jon?

Here is a list of offensive words, many people still use on PF,

There is one, however it's rarely used due to being perjorative

But the thread has developed into what it is.
Indeed in my first post to the OP, I pointed out that I felt the linked article was racist in tone.

I have to disagree

Nonsense, the word is unacceptable

True.

You see War you're argument is all over the place. You're basing it on what is you personally deem as 'cool' lingo on the streets of Lawndin inn't.

The people whom you describe as 'mulatto' are doing what black people did in the 60s/70s in the States with the N-word.
The are reclaiming the word because of it's racist undertones.
I'm surprised that you haven't realized that.
It's a racist term, but by using it to describe themselves they are deconstructing it of its racism.

I completely see this as a good thing. how and ever, if a white person called a mix-raced person a mulatto (you also used the word 'half-caste' which is incredibly offensive), then trouble would doubtlessly ensue and the person being spoken to/about would more than likely take offence.

It's still a racist word, just like the N-word is. But only certain people can use it, just like the N-word.
Simple.

Smurf,

The following points:

1. Rhianna is without doubt mulatto.
2. I base it on facts and I have provided links and sources.
3. No one has shown any respectable source stating mulatto is a racist term or derogatorty just personal opinions. Although some have shown sources stating mulatto is in fact a acceptable term.

4. I do not agree with your analogy of the N – word and mulatto, people of mixed race are choosing to class themselves as mulatto, as it describes them for what they are – not white or black. ' identity'

5. As for the term ' half caste' I personally despise it and find it derogatory.
Not in my experience or from the sources I have made available will mixed race people be offended by the term mulatto, nor do I believe it will cause violence as it is not offensive.

Yes, but she's better described as 'chavtastic' (no reference there to her race) and that is why I am disappointed that she got so much attention from Poles.

Rihanna seems to get whiter and whiter with age, saw a pic of her a couple of weeks back splashed all over the papers and she looked like a white chick in a bikini. I hope shes not doing that Michael Jackson thing, you'd have to say that she is as she was the one tweeting these pics. Talk about being an attention seeker.

Awesome singer though, i do enjoy a good chunk of her work.
