Pics of Warsaw by the Guardian's David Levene

It's like this..

There are two versions of the truth.

happy Indian slums..

:)

Not so happy Indian slums..

What slums?

Two sides of every story.. ;)

What are you going to do? Change the picture or change the reality it captures...?

(And by the way... no-one ever goes to India for their holidays...) ;)

The view of Ursynów is realistic, I agree, but possesses no merit beyond that. It's just a random snapshot.

It may look interesting for a Brit who has never been to Poland, for those who live in Poland or in Warsaw it is an ordinary picture, a 'random snapshot' as you were kind to say.

Ironically, your examples only serve to underscore what I had written earlier. Think about it ;-)

Prozna has not even a single renovated house, let alone being full of "beautifullly renovated old , noble houses

She obviously means ul Zielna, its correct ul Prozna does not have a single renovated building, most of the buildings are in very bad shape, I often wondered if there was a problem with ownership rights, on buildings in Prozna.

Why would you say that? The photo is clearly of Prozna and not Zielna and she specifically states Prozna. I think that she thought that she could sneak her lie under the radar here (and to be fair, for three pages she did just that). Also, Zielna isn't exactly packed with "beautifullly renovated old , noble houses": there is one nice renovated house and the recently renovated PAST building but that is very much that: until very very recently half of the street was sex shops and kebab houses!

Not really... I think you'll find it points out the necessity to take a balanced view of whatever *extremes* are being presented to you... identifying *all* the main themes for characterisation of a place.

But it is true that a place has to be represented by its contrasts as well as its banalities... and finding these in some cities can be harder than others. I think he did a good job.

Though what people *are* usually interested in are the contrasts.. the extremes. Which if these photos are anything to go by project no major worrying trends for your capital city.

It seems *you* want the extremes but only if they serve *your* idealistic view of Warsaw...
Show me *your* Warsaw...
He is simply showing you his.

Maybe you are *feeling* these pictures a little too much?

Where did I ever say I wanted to see ANY extremes? All the while I've been clamouring for a balanced view. I don't have an idealised opinion of Warsaw at all. In a former lifetime I even used to hate the city.

I'm just curious why Levene shows us wide-angled shots of Praga and Ursynów while carefully cropping most of his central Warsaw and Old Town pictures...

Show me *your* Warsaw...

Easier said than done. I haven't lived in Warsaw for a long time... I just pass through. I kinda actually like the place now though ;-)

No comments , you don`t understand completely anything I have just said in my previous posts

Check out this thread for some pictures, lots of them , no need for mine .

What Mr Levene has (deliberately, I assume) left OUT of his pictures seems to be the problem here, not the pictures as such.

Well said .

Prozna has not even a single renovated house,

The investment is scheduled for completion in 2012.

I was there 1 month ago . I also read about the renovation scheme . The whole Plac Grzybowski area looks spick- and - span . It was my impression that the last building is to be completed and it is the one on that picture by D. Levene . I was not interested in counting the buildings which need to be renowated . It seems to me that one building must be as long as the whole street ( the street is very short anyway ) . The plan is to bring back the beauty of its architecture . I haven`t visited this area for a long time and I was amazed by the new look of Plac Grzybowski . In one year all will look glorious .

Two, been to any photojournalism exhibitions on the South Bank lately? Warzones, refugees, the lot.

Not interested in british inner city problems

I'm just curious why Levene shows us wide-angled shots of Praga and Ursynów while carefully cropping most of his central Warsaw and Old Town pictures...

Ok, so you want more focus on the less candid aspects of Warsaw? But we want to see people up close don't we? People interacting with their surrounds... Maybe that's what makes this awkward.

In a former lifetime I even used to hate the city.

Hmmm.

I'm just curious why Levene shows us wide-angled shots of Praga and Ursynów while carefully cropping most of his central Warsaw and Old Town pictures...

To expose something more intimate?

To avoid overt sensationalism?

To give more clarity to the subject...?

I haven't lived in Warsaw for a long time... I just pass through. I kinda actually like the place now though ;-)

It's hard to know who's qualified to give the more balanced, less tainted view of a place... the resident or the visitor?

No comments , you don`t understand completely anything I have just said in my previous posts

No, I get it... you're grumbling...

Check out this thread for some pictures, lots of them , no need for mine .

So what's the problem? If other images *can* speak on behalf of your preferred impression of the city, then be happy. If they do not exist, make them up. :)

For **** sake people, they are just some pics that I liked because they showed another side to Warsaw than what you would find in any other tourist book or newspaper article about the city.

If you all can't just appreciate them or not is besides the point, the photos were taken to inspire whatever feelings you connect with them.

Leave the petty sh1t out or I'll just ask the mods to close my thread.

If you've never been inside a milk bar, the "service hatch" picture will not give you a clue. It mainly shows you a a very sceptical-looking lady.

But that's the way they are. I remember a following conversation in the milk bar. I was laughing so hard. It was like the essence of the milk bar.

An old gentlemen brings his soup bowl to the counter: "On the menu it says, 500g of soup, and there is maybe 450 in the bowl, no more!"

The milk bar lady takes the plate and puts it on the scale and yells "Look at the scale, exactly 500 g!" And she returns him the plate.

What else will you say , lady ? It is always like that if someone has nothing to say she starts beeing personal . So , tell us all about you , who you are, what you like , be more personal about yourself !

What would you like to know...? I think that after 1000 posts (Yes I know I know, thank you, it's been a pleasure) I've fairly well expressed my personal views on a lot of things.

I just don't see why you're all strung out about some photos... personally. ;)

I don't mind you being personal, I just mind you ruining it for everyone else. But don't worry, you'll catch on... :)

Oh that, and I'm going to bed. Good night moaner. :)

Well done you: I was there this morning. And while I was there I noticed that the building opposite the one in the photo is in a similar state of disrepair. And so is the one next to the one in the photo. And so is the one next to that. And so is the one next to the one opposite the one in the photo. I could go on. What I did not see is even a single beautifullly renovated old , noble house, despite you claiming that the street is full of them. And why is that? Because you were lying about that street.
