Fish and Chips in Warsaw

Tried it yesterday. Certainly a bloody good effort, and while it might not be the best ever, it's certainly up there. It's definitely fantastic for Poland - I really wonder where they get such good cod from? The chips were rather nice too, actually - I expected typical "chip shop" chips, but they were far better.

Pricewise - can't argue with 25zl for fish, chips, mushy peas and some onion rings. I left feeling stuffed and satisfied, so a glowing endorsement from me and it should definitely be tried.

As for the staff - friendly, efficient and even took the time to ask if I had a student ID card to give me a discount. That's exceptionally rare!

They import it themselves.

For me 25 PLN is expensive for Polish standards. I am sure for the Brits here this is good value for money. But you can get good food in Warsaw for the same price.

Still I will give it a try. Speaking as a Belgian you Brits can never equal our Belgian fries :)

But you can't get decent fish and chips for that price. You can get hearty Polish food cheap...but anything else, mmm, good luck.

Jazz Bistro - my favourite place in the city - has a good offer around that price, and nor hearty Polish fare I would say :)

I can see you've never been to the Belgian chip shop in Warsaw. As for Jazz Bistro, I've certainly never managed to stuff myself there for 23zł.

Just curious ... are you sure it was cod, and not some Asian catfish or some other sweet river thingie ... ?

Actually in Jazz Bistro in the 25-30 PLN range you can eat decently, they have never let me down in all these years.

By the way why to deep fry Mars bars, where I come from you eat them straight from the shop?

For sure! If you have ever been to the Torry fish bar, you'll recognise freshly caught cod. There is no doubt that Aberdonians know their fish. Screw Harry Ramsdens but think The Dolphin and The Ashvale. A jumbo haddock supper from either of those is the stuff of legends! One of my personal favourites was The Bluebird chippie on Urqhuart Road, just off King Street. I've been around the Aberdeen scene so can safely say how good the one in Warsaw is. I'll try it if I'm ever there. Oh yeah, the Woodend chippie is quite good too :)

It sounds pretty expensive when you compare it to UK prices, but then everywhere in the UK is nearer to the sea than Warsaw is ;)

is effectively my "local" ( even though it's not really that local) and sells the best fish and chips in the world. The fish is at least 12" long, and the portion of chips is huge; I can't finish it. And all this for just 18,31 PLN at today's exchange rate :)

Despite yesterday's sickening "toxic fish" thread, I've not been put off - Yo! Sushi at lunchtime, fish 'n' chips from the above for dinner :D

I went to this place today. The address is ul. koszykowa 30.

I am guessing that they changed the prices since opening.

I bought 'large' chips for 8zl and was very surprised. There were, honestly about 10 chips in the tray. I didn't expect the portion size to be same as the UK but it was a rip-off in my opinion.

They had other things available to buy such as biscuits and crisps. A packet of hobknobs cost 13zl.

Might be best for a rare treat.

Did you question it? They might genuinely just have mixed up what you ordered - when I was there in August, the normal portion size was a decent enough size.

Generally portions of fries or chips in Poland are stingy. It,s difficult to generalize in writing, but I would say that back in the UK I get 10 - 1 more in ratio of potato at equal cost.


I believe you mate and agree, you were ripped off.

It's hardly a rip-off if both seller and buyer agree on the price.

Still curious about this "ten chips for 8zl" though - haven't heard the same complaint from anyone else.

Maybe, they are looking for a different type of clientele, than someone who just spends 8zl, they have a small place, would someone who is prepared to spend much more money, want to stand in a queue of 10 people waiting for chips at lunchtime.

I order from them once a week (or at least did so until they suspended their delivery service) and never had any problems with the portion size. A large cod and chips was always very much a stomach full!

I agree with you that the biscuits and so on are rather expensive (although cheaper than the only other choice in town, Kuchnia Swiat). If you want things like that, it's cheaper to just order them and have exactly what you want brought from the UK.

neither have you obviously. it's certainly the best chips in warsaw. the sauces are fantastic, and they've even got kalasnikoffs; beat that for authenticity
