That second part doesn't exactly reinforce the first :) Not to mention that I know myself fairly well, and I found myself agreeing with the scum comment. Might ride down to the mountains in a bit :)

Dunno how the Polish constables would react, but a good ol' American way of dealing with apple-stealers is a shotgun loaded with rock salt. It won't cause much damage but it stings like h*ll and fruit thieves are not likely to come back for more.

It causes plenty of damage. Life time scarring for one. I don't know where in the US you're at, but back home we prefer steel pellets to rock salt when dealing with thieves.

Some sad (I am afraid) answers:

- trespassing is not a criminal act. Police would not intervene.
- Stealing of the fruits would be ignored unless you can prove that the damage is over 250PLN.
- If you start a war with the villagers, they will start a war with you. It may take years.

My advice: Make a fence. Breaking into an enclosed space (especially if the locks/gates are damaged in the process) is criminal offence.
Buy a BIG dog.

Well thats good news in a way....I think a party in her garden with me and a few boys from my motorcycle club might drop a hint that its not fun having people wander onto your property...

I do have some fences , but its a biggish area and would cost a fortune to fence all of it , besides , i allow another neighbour access over my land to plough his bit...

I do have a dog , but he is not the least bit aggressive , and if i let him loose all day he would probably find his way onto the road , or chase some cows...he does bark if anyone comes near the place though...

I have already had my run in with the village after some guys broke into my house and stole mobile phones and cameras , when the guys from my motorcycle club heard about it , the bandits wound up looking like a pizza... I dont have any problems with the village folks at all , and the bandits keep well clear of my place...

There will be a simple answer somewhere...just ain,t thought of it yet...!

Can't you spray the fruit with something that will give them the shits?

Of course if i had any potatoes growing here a spud gun would be a better idea due to the unlimited supply of ammo..

Apples work too :)

1911

That would be my other single action option...

spread rumours that after the year/two/three of living on your farm in Poland, you've developed some unexplained chemical/biological/radiation poisoning symptoms, and if they don't see you, you're probably having medical test, and for God's sake, implore them to stay away until you have more information.

lol the villagers would probably feel compelled to exorcise the land. They might burn the place, or fix it up for you so they can cure you their food when you return.

Seriously, even if it's just to ease your russian lady's mind, keep the farm. Also, and just as importantly, a man with fall-back options is much much more exciting.

When my neighbour emigrated to the states, his place was taken apart brick by brick. The banging of sledge hammers went on day and night all year long until all that was left of a 600m dwelling was a pile of rubble.

When I reported these goings on to the police chief, he told me, each must take care of their own. Thanks I said, tomorrow it might happen to you, so I will remember your advice.

Seven hectares of chain link fencing has subsequently gone to the scrapper too.
The orchard resembles something after a fallout.... need I say more ?

My advice would be to beat them to picking the fruit, and if they show up beat them with a baseball bat. They are hardly going to report you, after trying to steal YOUR fruit.

As for moving.... count your loses, unless you install a caretaker. Maybe use the same scum that are ripping you off, ( contract of course ) and get someone to look in from time to time, unannounced.

Good luck wildrover, hope to bump into you before you leave.

I will figure out an answer somehow....????

Let's see you have a World Wide audience on pf and often times people ask questions about housing in Poland. Hmmmm...maybe you can advertise on pf that the place is for rent?

Put up some pictures of your place. There might be many people, like myself, that would not mind unwinding for a week in Polish coutryside.

We have had an incident where my daughters dog was shot by local 'hunters' on our land and there is nothing we can do about it.

Their argument is, which was backed up by the Police, that they have a right to protect the wildlife from local dogs killing the wildlife as long as has no collar and is 300 metres away from the home. They have a right to access on any land in the area prowling around with a gun and shooting what they like. Our dog had a collar but after it was shot the collar was removed by the 'hunter' and discarded in the bushes which we found sometime later.

This guy is untouchable as he is on the local council and is respected as such and if we were to go against him it would cause problems for us locally and with the future planning we have in mind for our properties.

The trouble is now that I cannot allow my daughter safely to go off into our forest walking our dogs just in case some madman is walking around with a shotgun shooting indiscriminately.

Crazy!!!

Are property rights that weak here? That is insane.
OP wildrover 98 | 4,441

Yes , its true....They can wander around on your land and shoot cats , dogs or whatever takes their fancy , and i have heard before so many cases of dogs having their collars removed after being shot....

My neighbour has had two dogs shot , but to be fair she did let them run around loose quite a bit , which is a bit naughty in an area where there are farm animals....

During the hunting season i have had guys with high powered hunting rifles close to my house , and seen them having a few beers while waiting for something to shoot...Great... a man with a gun , and drinking beer , not a good idea i think...!

The hunters don,t come near my place any more , as it seems all the animals run away when i fire up the Harley , something that seems to happen a lot when i see hunters around...!

There are two deer that have been visiting my house since i moved here , and so far they have survived all the hunting seasons thankfully...

I also made it known i am an ex soldier who would regard anyone coming near me with a gun as a threat...i might well shoot them....!

I know that hunting is an old and noble sport , and the hunting groups do much to preserve the forest , but it seems to me there are a lot of them who just like killing things , and if there are no deer or wild boar around , they will shoot your pets...!

Yes , its true...

Holy sheepsheet. Yea, Poland is definitely off my list of "places to retire".

Man, that's such a fundamental thing. Jesus. Insane, just plain insane.

Couldn't you just shoot them when they come on to your land again? Just say you thought they were wild boar or something.

Ha...a bit tricky when its broad daylight....and its not hunting season yet , and i don,t have a hunting permit..

I suspect i may be a bit unpopular if i shot some old bat and her grandchildren...just for stealing apples....

I think having a biker party on her land might drop a big hint....!

chop the trees down - you're not going to use them again

or spray the fruit with pesticide -- leave clear information about what you've done, of course, then it's their choice whether or not to poison themselves.

well, some of the Australian backwaters are quite scary, but Sheila does not travel there.

Yes indeed it's easy to write such nonsense, when you got no clue what you're writing about. That's how most of the authors does nowadays.

Maybe she will be the next J.K.Rowling???

Holy sheepsheet. Yea, Poland is definitely off my list of "places to retire".

But wait. Unless you are paying hefty maintanance fees, or have family or friends look after the place, where in the world can you leave your house (I'm not talking about an apartment, where nobody might even notice you're gone) vacant for 6 or more months and expect to find it untouched?
OP wildrover 98 | 4,441

expect to find it untouched?

I think you would have problems in the UK if you left a house empty long enough...

I am not sure it would be stolen brick by brick though , as has happened in Poland..!
