The WOW signal I'm certain was confirmed to be of human origin. Take a look at the video I linked above, the scientist who discovered it explains something about the direction of the signal - further explaining that it was in fact originating from a satellite sent out to orbit the sun.

Also, thanks for the Google Mars link! Fascinating

Ah my bad. They said that it has no explanation, it was the second signal that was determined to be of human origin.

Alrighty. Well try not to take it too seriously, it's just a light-hearted, layman's documentary with the soothing narration of Morgan Freeman :)

Part of the reason for landing in that particular crater is the mountain inside. They believe that the wind erosion on the cliff faces will reveal millions of years of geological activity up close, without Curiosity having to drill down to examine cores of material. Think of it like fossil hunters exploring the Devon beaches, if you like.

I've been using today's success as a core discussion topic in my lessons. Is $2.5bn that much for a two year science project, when London spent $13bn on the Olympics for just two weeks of sport?

Heh! The "Mohawk Guy" is Bobak Ferdowski, and he works in Cali, though my old man is aware of him, my pops works mainly in Florida. Incidentally, my wife thinks Bobak (32) is a hottie.

Why doesn't NASA send one up that will do everything

This really is the real deal, a rover that will do everything. Its taken decades of development and billion of dollars to get there.

Yes, a robot with a laser gun ....who'd have thought it would be us invading mars with scary robots and lasers and not the other way round......HG Wells must be kicking himself :)
