Football is a sport. It has more fans who are brown or black than white, more who are Muslim than Christian and is enjoyed all over the worls, from the back streets of Tripoli to the suburbs of Glasgow.

Even the rivalry and violence of some of the porer educated fans is pat of that, and good that it's focused on football rather than religion or something as pathetically trivial as nationalism.

Yes and no; football appeals to (among many other people) economically disempowered and uneducated young men with low IQs, as does so-called nationalism.
