Confused about question for journalism job - 'experience on assignment or in field?'

Hi folks. Given that I work at a local paper, I should probably know this. Unfortunately I don't and I wondered if anybody else had any idea.

I am applying for a journalism job as after sending my CV, was told it looked good and then asked

'Have you any experience on assignment or in field?'

Does anyone know what that means. I have an idea but am not quite sure. I don't want to ask what it means in case it's a term I should understand ( and I probably should).

'Have you any experience on assignment or in field?'

On assignment - when they send you to check out something and do an in-depth report on it. For example, if you were sent to WaƂbrzych to investigate the gold train - that's on assignment.

In field - when you're outside of the office (possibly far away) fishing for stories.

Thanks guys

Yeah I assume it would be something like that. In field to be elsewhere while on assignment would be, working on some particular topic. Appreciate it.
