Warsaw is the natural capital of Europe, not Brussels

Crow:
i hope that most of people of this forum feel this way. Europe would be better place with Warsaw as capital of this continent, for many reasons...
So true, Crow!

Funny thing, we Warsawers would happily give the capital city back to Cracow to enjoy fresh air, having vast parking spaces and little of traffic but Cracowers don't want to become the capital again. I wonder why.

If this ever come to make Warsaw the capital of Europe, I would vote NO.

Being capital has too many quirks for that. I live in a suburb of a capital city and there's a lot going on here because it's the capital. Why give up good fortune for something less?

Me, too.

and there's a lot going on here because it's the capital.

Haven't noticed that here. Yes, there are almost only SUVs in the parking place of our local supermarket and Andrzej Wajda does his shopping there, too; outside that I see NO benefits. Yes, Michałowice that are around 16 km in the direction of Warsaw are the richest place in the region but my Silesian friends laugh at that and say the concentration and size of light industry and small business is incomparably higher in their region -- and that's true. There is -- so far -- no leverage between the function of the capital city Warsaw and real richness of the region. Suburbs are rather bedrooms for Warsaw.

If you want to apply for a government job you haven't far to travel, right ;)

Even that is not right! It is just 25 km from the place I live to the city centre, yet you need at least 1 hour of driving or more, depending on the weather, for most of the day, for most of the year (Summertime is easier, many people having their holidays. With snowing or heavy raining the traffic just crawls).

People would be better off taking the WKD commuter train, 40 minutes and you are guaranteed to be in the city centre on time but then what do you need your SUV for? ;-)

Haha. Is it too far to walk? What about buses or trams?
People drive for hours just to put in applications at the capital. I don't envy them. Then, they have to come back for the interviews. I haven't bothered trying to get a job with the state but it's nice to know it's not going to be a total pain to do so if I ever wanted to.

Once, a drunk guy at my open-air party initiated a fight, blood was spilled and he also attacked me. I have driven him out with a broomstick. It was middle of the night, no communication to Warsaw. He and his loyal friend walked all the way to Warsaw along the railway track, which took them some 6 hours.

No buses, no trams, only the commuter train or a car. Still it is popular living place for "warszawka" and the Klan sitcom has been filmed here nearby. I appear to be one of the "aborigines", settling here only in 1990 (and we had this land already in 1974), the most of neighbours being well-doing Warsaw upstarts.

Wow a six hour walk. There's always hitch hiking.

Warsaw and Berlin, the two ugliest capitals in Europe. Not to mention, there's no highways that connect W-wa with Berlin, Prague, Bratislava etc. So no, W-wa should not be the capital of EU.

I don't know I would say London is the ugliest capital in Europe.

Maybe a good choice for capital of Europe would be a small country capital in the middle of Europe, like Budapest, Prague or Belgrade?

why not Vienna, Luxembourg or Heidelberg (very pretty town)?

Suburbs are rather bedrooms for Warsaw.

that's why we call the "bedroom communities" ;)

Ah the troubles of modernity :)

I would vote for Luxembourg anytime. Very human capital of a friendly country. Have been there lots of times and like it a lot.
Crow would not like it :)))).

The exact centre of Europe is just east of Warsaw. A huge rock marks the spot.
Warsaw is the most central city in Europe.
Warsaw was completely destroyed in WWII (95%). The communists had the first chance with a blank canvas - but fecked it up by producing a pile of shite.

Now this pile of shite is slowly being transformed into a mini New York. Every brick and steel beam is thoughtful - designers flock from around the world, scientists meet in it's many peacefull parks.

Almost every developed country is investing in prime - down town bomb sites - building inspired office buildings - apartment blocks. After 20 years the very centre of warsaw is still a bomb site. Undeveloped. they are thinking carefully about how best to develop this.

It will be developed together - with all european designers, architects and it will belong to Europe. All of Europe will have an interest in Warsaw. This is how it will evolve. Warsaw due to it's distruction now has a unique chance to rise - and rise for all of Euqrope.

Berlin has been rebuilt - but too quickly - with thier own money and it's dull, monotonous and insular. It's not really an inspired or interesting place.

There ya go. Easy.

As a Norman Davies book reads:

Heart of Europe- The Past in Poland's Present.

Poland is in central Europe, historically center of many conflicts, looks like a heart, and the people are awesome :D

It is not a secret, BB :) Warsaw is a better kept secret: besides a few people nobody else knows that it is a center ;)

looks like a heart

Indeed, there is resemblance, but as you know the heart is not in the center :) The center would be a bit further to the right (thus, to the west), which gives Germany another point.

What about the Oder? Nice natural curve for a center and will satisfy the two countries.
But to be true to the measurements as midpoints of the Europe's extreme points Belarus would have the center point:

The geographical midpoint equidistant to these extreme points (if 66° 11′ 57″ E is used as easternmost point) is at 53°34′01.5″N 28°20′57.2″E / 53.567083°N 28.349222°E / 53.567083; 28.349222, 15 km north east of Marina Gorka, Belarus. The centre could be 1° to the east.
