The first strange piece of information that has come out was that the airport at Smolensk reportedly does not have an Instrument Landing System (ILS). Considering how horrendous the weather can be in Russia during winter and spring and fall, it's stunning to hear that a significant European city of 330,000 people does not have an airport with an ILS. One excuse is that the airport was an ex-military airbase. Which raises the question: "Were the Russians letting their $30 million dollar Sukhoi Su-27 fighters land there without an Instrument Landing System?"

The first strange piece of information that has come out was that the airport at Smolensk reportedly does not have an Instrument Landing System (ILS).

That's not very odd. Quite a few Russian military airfields (and Polish ones) use radar approaches. There is also an NDB approach available.

Sabotage could be confusing QNH and QFE. The TAWS and the radar altimeter would also have to be sabotaged. Bad charts would have to be provided as well.

Put simply, the extreme right now rules Poland, and people widely considered marginal and dangerous even a year ago are now within the corridors of power.

I don't understand this entire paragraph. The government is PO. Opinion polls were already showing that PO probably wasn't going to have a problem with taking the head of state role either...

And then there's the weather. That's an elaborate one to pull off, sabotaging every vital navigational system on the plane...and firing up the weather generating machine.

I expect that next week we'll hear something about an NDB approach that was incorrectly flown. I'm guessing that they also busted the minimums by a great deal. I already feel sorry for the family of the crew.

His analysis makes sense but we still are awaiting a bombshell in the coming week. Technical accounts will say that he was losing altitude due to his being unfamiliar with the new system but the TAWS system was specifically designed to alert him that he was too low. If it comes to be that the pilot wanted the runway lights to be activated and they weren't, there will be hell to pay for the Russian authorities. If that was a material factor then such oversight is unforgivable. They knew the plane was coming in but seemed to be underprepared. It just strikes me as strange that Protasiuk had no problems coming in with Tusk but was way off course the second time round.

Remember, there is a huge difference between approach lighting and runway lighting. If there was a request to turn on runway lighting...that would be shocking in itself and would mean that the crew knew exactly that were f*cking up in a big way. It would mean that they busted the minimums by a huge margin and were hunting for the runway in extremely low visibility. This is all making me sick to my stomach to be honest.

They knew the plane was coming in but seemed to be underprepared.

Already discussed several times here:
(1) Noone may expect safe landing on the abandoned military airbase with one civil flight a week in the bright weather.
(2) Tusk visited it together with Putin. There is information in Russian newspapers that Russian security service bring mobile CLS before it and remove it after.

(3) Who put your President for landing in fog to the not prepared airbase? Russian Il-76 with security officials turned back to Moscow after landing attempt just before Polish TU-154.

Who is responsible for playing roulette with VIPs flight? Somebody ever prepared this visit?

The preparation of the VIPs visit started not with landing attempts decision, but days earlier.

Jeez...these are not really tall trees he hit....he was flying pretty dam low to hit them....

The radio mast looks a lot taller , some reports say they hit that first , lost a lump of wing , then hit the trees as the aircraft began to roll over....

I am starting to believe this pilot may well have deliberatly flown well below the safe height in order to try to catch sight of the runway...an incredibly dangerous thing to do...

Sadly , when they did see the ground , it was too late to avoid hitting it...

you know that USA have significant experience in remote control of planes. See, USA sold idea to Euro-Arabs, in order to screw Polish-Russian relations. Serbians in buses talk and say that it must be newest USA joke on the account of Poles

Likewise. I think that the big question that will need to be answered is why that decision was taken. Plenty of people have pointed out that these weren't newly minted pilots.

What would the result be if BOTH of these occurred:

1) the airport had the ILS removed after Tusk's visit, but before Kaczynksi's
2) the TAWS system on the plane was removed/tampered with during its servicing in Russia

There was never a fixed ILS at Smolensk.

You'd still have to tamper with the GPS receivers, the radar altimeter, and the charts (or the altimeters). TAWS is not a single point of failure.

There was never a fixed ILS at Smolensk.

That's exactly my point. It could be removed and installed at will. There are 2 types of ILS: fixed and portable.
