A serious country does not have a laissez-faire capitalistic approach to demographics. And that does of course include migration control to keep it in line with the availability of social housing, the number of job vacancies and the preferences of the trade unions.

Agreed! People wandered since the dawn of times. There is even a super old german word for it: "Völkerwanderung"!
But till recently immigrants did expect nothing but possibilities...for work, to build themselves a living....that changed, for years now immigrants expect social generosities even without having to work for it like the natives after decades of paying taxes. THAT is the main problem for the state (to expensive) and the people (lacking acceptance), IMHO.

The only thing that would make me agree with jon's belief that most would come if there weren't the generous benefits is if they were truly escaping war or persecution at home.
Most people want to stay with the familiar. Better to live in poverty in a place you know than to live impoverished as a foreigner.

And this is what beguiles me, why did we change? Why have we stopped demanding assimilation, ie learning the language, working, only allowing in what was needed, adopting OUR customs (and not bending over backwards to cater to their customs)?

I guess it was the "Zeitgeist", the thinking that every little minority, every "weirdo", has the absolute same rights as the majority "normalo"....and should not discriminated against. And the description what falls under discrimination has become a very wide field...
A thinking which in its core is not wrong but as we learned means the death of every assimilation, even normal integration becomes a problem. In a society full of powerful minorities and where individual rights RULE, there is no place for common sense!
