distance makes everything look smoother

It definitely does.

Less works there than the Japanese say it does though.

All that stuff about longevity and super centenarians has less to do with diet and lifestyle and more to do with the fact that deaths have to be notified to the city by a family up to 18 months after they happen, the penalties for late notification or non-notification are traditionally not enforced and old age pensions are good...

...the fact that deaths have to be notified to the city by a family up...

start looking more and more to Japan, they have become kind of an ideal

I love Japan and Japanese culture but I doubt anyone who wants to use them as an example for Germany knows what he is talking about.

Japanese people do significantly more working hours per year.

Japan has a lower official retirement age, but the low pensions and high living costs mean that Japanese worker retire later than Germans.

And who remembers how people reacted when Merz suggested that Germans needed to work more and longer?

Germany, not cool??! Are you crackers, B.B.?
German culture is the quintessence (der Inbegriff) of cool, at least, intense.
Ok, maybe Italy has you beat.

How could you think that.... Deutschland gave Heino to a grateful world!

Let's listen as he asks the musical question "Karamba, Karacho, ein Whisky".

Yeah... John Sinclair! Those were the first things written for Germans that I could read, so I have some extra affection for them. Who needs some Magic Mountain when you've got.... the Hell Carriage! (looks better as one word, but Hellcarriage in English... )

Years ago when I first checked online I was told there was no Sinclair fandom... but apparently now there is, so.... (relief).

Oh, sure she might. Only they surely wouldn't resonate!
France had Piaf, post-War Germany had Knef.
Today, way too many sadly see life as a given, not a gift. Our expectations have grown chronically jaded, our desires incurably cynical.

....and I am not so sure one can blame social media for all of it!

But mostly.
Recently, saw a delightful oldie from the late '50's, "Fruehling in Berlin" (without subtitles, of course). It was plain innocent fun, charming and elegant. People spoke better German back then too. Aber soooo ein Ohrenschmaus!!

Not better necessarily, but less automatic for certain.

Of course not. The vast majority of things are better today. 😊

Faster doesn't mean better

No matter what you take, new technologies are amazing. It has nothing to do with being faster.

As long as they are used responsibly!
Once the horse and buggy was cutting edge, don't forget.
