Poland, to the best of my knowledge, has never hosted the Olympic games--Summer or Winter. Do you think Poland will ever host the Olympics in the future?

No Polish place have slopes good enough for Olympics. It would require a lot of work.

Let us see how the logistics for UEFA-2012 work out first. Everybody is talking about this now. And so far, there are still many problems.

I hope not. The Tatra mountains are overcrowded even now. No need to completely destroy the National Park area there.

Summer Olympics are a different kettle of fish though. Maybe in some 30 years.

Yes. I asked my consulting assistant- she says they will take place in 2027. Plus minus.

I am doubtful even about next year, 2012 Olympics.

What for? And if it ever happened, I'm afraid it would end up with a scenario similar to the Greek one: stadiums rotting away and a sh!tload of debts.

If Poland wants to organise such an event, it needs to embrace fully the concept of sustainability: not only the the event counts, but its aftermath as well. That requires an entire change of mentality, which is undergoing here in Britain: in the olympics context, the sport venues are designed so they can be used afterwards (e.g. newly built velodrome has been hailed as 'the most sustainable sport venue in the world'). Sports village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is to be converted into a housing estate etc.

We'll see how the EURO 2012 and its aftermath will work for Poland and Poles. I'd say that its success or failure would be the critical factor for making a decision about applying for the Olympics organisation.

If the EURO 2012 is a big success, and I think it will be, I don't see why not. Poland will be more popular, and more likely to host the olympics. personally, I think Poland has a great chance to host the winter olympics. But, they can't do it alone. They have to co host it with Slovakia, and like emha said, Poprad and Zakopane could work. I went to the Tatra's a month ago. It was beautiful, but the Polish side alone is WAY too small. If you look at the previous hosts and their locations like France, Italy, Austria, Norway and Canada, their mountains are MASSIVE in comparison to Zakopane. Their spa towns and infrastructure in general are on a completely different level. So they only way I could see Poland hosting the winter games is if they co host with Slovakia/Poprad. With the Tatra mountains from both sides, it should be big enough to host.

the winter olympic facilities as they are in the olympics can't be very useful to many of the locals afterwards, can they?
Curling
Bobsledding
Luge
Skeleton
Speed Skating
Hockey Arenas (ok in Slovakia yes but they'd need some massive arenas that would be hard to get to)

I see the winter olympics as a bad investment for a lot of places, that includes southern poland.

Poland will never host the Olympic Games, and that's a good thing, No facilities for either summer or winter games, and no money to provide them.

Are you joking? Anything 'reprezentacyjny' is to Poland what a nice well fed cat is to a Chinaman.

A city can host the Olympic games not the country, but you can give some sports in other cities but need to be close so the athletes won't need to travel a lot.

Poland + Slovakia could host some very beautiful Winter Olympic games.

They were going to, in 2022...but pulled out because of the insane costs!

A shame in some respects, but probably the right decision for the Polish/Slovakian taxpayer.
