Far-right surge in Germany and Poland

Will the recent local election results in Sachsen-Anhalt have any repercussions on Poland?

As much of Europe is tilting right, merely curious how this will play out along the Vistula.

It could be a distraction. Far-right = no immigration. Starting backward. How about far-right = no government corruption and grifter pedos in power?

For Poland, it may no longer have a strong effect. PiS has been in power long enough and has produced some far-right movement. Unlike Canada, Poland was smarter than Germany not to allow many immigrants from non-Christian countries.

Germany though had to bend over backwards to accommodate the down and out owing to their Nazi past, Poland didn't!

No.

No

Yes, maybe people will wise up and stop choosing the wrong political parties, because this is no joke. I think that after the post-election hangover, many Germans in Saxony-Anhalt woke up to a completely new reality. 😱

I agree, Alien! Too many middle of the roaders in Germany asleep at the switch. Underestimating the enemy from within can prove fatal. Shades of '33? Hitler & cohorts weren't from another galaxy; they were solely homegrown evil.

Weidel and Siegmund may wear pretty smiles, flaunt outrageous, cutting-edge lifestyles, they're nonetheless dangerous.

Let's hope so. The Konfa ones, Mentzen, JKM are populist clowns, and dangerous ones.

Apparently the government are going to stop sharing defence information with the authorities in Saxony-Anhalt. Things like the German equivalent of the War Book. Of course there are probably copies of all sorts of confidential thingfs in the Saxony-Anhalt office already that they could potentially get hold of on behalf or r*SSia.

Jon, you have the tendency to paint anybody of political view different from yours as a clown, what is it, far reaching definition of TDS?

Jon, you have the tendency to paint anybody of political view different from yours as..

British cigarette suffering from stage 4 TDS, hopefully Stormy Daniels will come to his rescue soon.

The far right are a political view different from most of humanity.

So now you are humanity. Jon, you are tiny. minority, a leftist rebel, to you any normal person is a far right.

Point is far right is NOT normal!! It's a pointed deviation from conventional normalcy.

far right is NOT normal

Define "far right"....

@mafketis

Far-right = control over immigration apparently

Far-right = control over immigration apparently

Through hysterical overuse "far right" is rapidly joining "fascist" and "racist" and "nazi" is empty words that signal nothing beyond "I don't like it!"

Mafketis,

Anti-migrant stance...en masse, anti-EU isolationism, minimization of The Holocaust,
rejection of Brussels as gen'l. arbiter of continental affairs, should any one country get out of hand, etc.

In short, Trumpist thinking!

mafketis  48 | 12465

Anti-migrant stance

That describe a majority in pretty much every European country... find any European country where a minority are in favor of allowing in very large numbers of unvetted fight age male migrants. Go ahead... I'll wait.

EU is no longer necessarily good for much and declining popularity is a result of EU policy, not 'far right' peopel

No EU institution has any real (hard) power and no member state (maybe partly Germany and/or France) wants to be ordered around by Brussels which has no real (hard) political power in any case.

Fetishization of the holocaust has in recent years done far more harm than good.

Trumpist thinking!

You mean the guy who got the US mired in an unwinnable conflict in the US because Israel wanted him to?

Anti-migrant....distrust of overreaching global organizations like the EU....rejection of to much power for Brussels....that all are totally acceptable political viewpoints, Lyzko! If you like them or not.

The minimization/denial of the Holocaust is on a wholly different level, that is something else....sometimes these viewpoints overlap but more often they do not! And you will find lotsa people who agree with the first part and detest the second as much as you do.

"fascist" and "racist" and "nazi"

I agree that those terms are more frequently used than I would like, used without precision.

Far right describes fiscally economic populist thinking combined with an often violent ( in words or deeds) dislike of an undefined other. It's a moveable feast but clearly identifiable. Now, it's more difficult to define populist policies because again, they are used to sate the electorate and that's how they are identified.

Bratwurst Boy  9 | 13193

Frankly, I think leftists are the worst populists there are!

What is more populists than stating; We just take from the rich, give it to you then all of you will live better forever...vote us!!!!

Or the biggest lie of all: "Power for everybody"! That has never worked once. When all have power, nobody has! When everything belongs to everybody, nobody owns anything.
There ARE decisions needed, meaning people who HAVE to have more power than others...and who cares about stuff which isn't "mine"? Nobody! All socialists experiments failed and ended in economically miserable political dictatorships.

And yet...the Left still promises the impossible blue from the sky....if that isn't populism to "sate the electorate", I dunno!

Is Trump left? He promised to print 5k and give away to increase inflation and deficits. Left = Right, no difference.

Bratwurst Boy  9 | 13193

He is a master populist! 😁

He tells the electorate what they want to hear....that can be a stop of immigration and/or more money, whatever works...a very successful way to get elected in democracies. I guess only the stable wealth of the last decades saved the West from such govs....now, with all these global and national crises things have changed.

And frankly as long as the so called old establishment parties don't find working answers we will see alot more of them rising up in our countries...

OP Lyzko9bda5804d1f

Add to the long list Huey Long, Mao....and if course, Hitler.
Populism appeals to the heart, not the head.

Bratwurst Boy  9 | 13193

THAT! *nods*

Thats their secret for success...the emotions! And people are emotional beings, often deciding with the heart, not a cool head....

OP Lyzko9bda5804d1f

Which is why Trumpist types are in essence anti-intellectual.

Bratwurst Boy  9 | 13193

Yes, of course!

I believe intellectuals won't win elections any time soon any more...

mafketis  48 | 12465

The purpose of elections are to let the political establishment know what citizen preferences are.

If winning parties/politicians do not do what they can to enact policy that reflects citizen preferences then there is no democracy but technocracy - electing the schmucks who get to enact policy decided by others aka despotism by another name.

Or... you could just have referendums where citizens express their preferences openly.

people who HAVE to have more power than others

Elected representatives.

Populism is incredibly difficult to define, it's a bit like art, pages of waffle to describe a pleasing sound or image when most just know. The rhetoric around migration is bollox, loads of triggers like open borders or fighting age men are used to generate an emotion. The left and right both use populist rhetoric but this exchange started with defining far right.

Fiscally conservative vs fiscally economic populist are different things.

Populist slogans like "a rising tide lifts all boats" or "trickle down economics" are just excuses to skew the economy in favour of already rich people. Taxation is necessary in any economy to pay for necessary services and subsidise industry. Musk wouldn't have become so wealthy without government subsidies and contracts, the same goes for most oligarchs. Driving on a road is possible due to taxation. Taxation is not taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Taxation is part of all government and everyone benefits. Small government like most of Africa doesn't produce results it produces Somalia. A monoculture produces Pyongyang.

you could just have referendums where citizens express their preferences openly.

How does that work? You need a referendum on what we have a referendum on or what is the threshold to decide?

No that's a bonkers idea
