Strategically though, taking Kaliningrad, speculating, would be a first retaliation move IMO. Force any Baltic shipping up through the Gulf of Finland and increase pressure on supply chain. In theory Russia could be cut off from the Baltic pretty quickly, then all shipping through Siberia in winter? Fun stuff. The Med would be all but cut off. Dangerous game when we play rumor and innuendo, or guess and hope.
@Novichok Plenty of speculation that Poland would be the first NATO country Russia would try if they could. Really, if not for nukes, a ground war against Russia would finally put an end to the insane paranoia of one nation. But nukes will not allow that to happen. Gonna have to starve them out.

Poland is too big and relatively important.... I would say they'd try for Latvia on the pretext of "protecting" ethnic Russians there.... who cares about..... Latvia? or maybe Estonia or Lithuania (they have the right to connect Kaliningrad with the rest of the motherland!).

That's the main reason of Putin's frustration. With Fit for 55 program, and general move towards renewable/sustainable energy sources, Russia's position (and income!) will fall drastically. Russia is one big gas station - if that source of income disappears then, with the level of corruption and kleptocracy there, the entire country will collapse economically. The current Ukraine mess is a sorry attempt by Putin to win something for Russia while they are still relatively more important than Mongolia.

U.S. media coverage is a bigger threat to Ukraine at this point than a Russia invasion in my opinion. Now Putin says Russia must enhance economic sovereignty due to sanctions threat.
