I wouldn't hold my breath. Especially that humanity today has, by and large, answers and solutions to most problems but refuses to implement them to protect the wealth and power of the richest 0.001% (fewer than 80,000 people) who have more resources than the bottom half of humanity put together.
What worries me more than a possibility of nuclear war is the development of AI and rendering of a lot of existing jobs obsolete. When the elites come to the conclusion that the Earth is overpopulated, they will find a way to solve the "problem", but it won't be with a nuclear war. I am thinking more about manipulated crop failures all over the world, the break of supply chains and resulting mass hunger which could potentially lead to 5-6 billion deaths.
Countries like Russia, where individual people in far away regions (even in subarctic climate) still know how to grow food, breed animals and live off-grid, should survive. The West, densely populated and with people even in rural areas heavily dependent on sophisticated supply chains, will suffer much more.

AI is programmed to be observant and test out moves, choices made by humans to find and experience the pro's and cons of tactics, strategies or choice to make so as to learn and improve. It wouldn't take long for AI to do most workable minimal efforts to keep the worst of the worst of humans in check regardless of their wealth while aiding and accommodating those who create least possible problems for the AI to operate and function while helping it to be repaired, maintained and continued to function.
If anything it has great prospects for humanity to improve and for the worst to live in another space or boubble without realising it, keeping them further away from most people more effectively then police departments.
