It is basically the same caliber. The difference arose when countries started to make a transition from imperial to metric units. Up to WW1, 6 inches was a standard artillery caliber (6 inches = 152.4mm). At the same time, Russia employed a unit of measurement called a line, to measure calibers. The line was equal to exactly 1/10th of an inch.

This is why the Mosin-Nagant "3-Line Rifle", had a caliber of 7.62mm. Also, why the 5 line Browning machine gun, became 12.7mm. Finally, this is how a 60 line artillery caliber, became 152.4mm.

There's some further confusion, between the 155mm and 152.4mm caliber, because in the West the caliber is measured between the pits ("B" in the picture below), while in Warsaw Pact countries it is measured between the grooves ("A" below").

The real difference these days, is that 155mm Western shells are typically quite a bit longer than 152.4mm Russian shells.

Nobody is winning.

The difference, however, between Russia not winning and Ukraine not winning is that Russia can "digest" the losses and, despite suffering a lot financially and militarily, has enough potential to survive and rebuild after the war. Ukraine, on the other hand, is already pretty much f*cked. Overwhelming majority of people who left to Germany, Poland, Canada etc. won't come back. There are currently between 27-30 million people in Ukraine. Research indicates that in the next decade there will be, depending on various factors, between 24 and 32 million people living in Ukraine...

Don't get me wrong - the Ukrainians here are lovely, hard-working people, but there's just too many. And it's not about this arseh*le Kania being annoyed with the number of Russian/Ukrainian speakers everywhere in Gdańsk (from the zoo and parks to the malls and restaurants) - I actually don't mind hearing Slavic languages, quite the contrary. It's about the young or less well-off Poles being driven from Tricity back to their little Ostródas, Iławas and other Lęborks because they simply cannot afford the rents anymore (the crazy influx of Ukrainians has driven rent prices up) despite somewhat higher salaries than they had back home. A lovely young maths teacher who worked with my wife is already back in Iława and a pre-school teacher whom my son absolutely adored last year won't be there to take care of him anymore, as she and her husband were forced to return to Człuchów to live with their parents again. Maybe it's better for those small, dying-out towns, but is it better for Poland in general that most major cities have effectively become bi-national? Time will tell.

If they gain Polish citizenship, then sure - they will be entitled to everything - no problem; but giving foreigners full access to free health service, education (even with preference when it comes to free, state kindergarten places) and welfare benefits, including child money, is nothing short of insane. Hopefully the next government will end this madness.

So is Russia. Maybe not to the degree that Ukraine is, but certainly in a similar manner. Russia was facing a demographic collapse in the 2030s before Covid hit and now a war that killed, maimed and forced into migration up to a million Russian men.

Its' fossil fuel oriented export economy was ill-equipped for the end of the fossil age in 10-15 years before the war cost them their best costumers, hundreds of bns in lost revenue and added more and more strain on their state budgets. Not to mention all the money needed to replenish Russian military losses that could have been used for better purposes.

No matter how this war ends, both countries will be incredibly affected by it.

We are not Saudi Arabia, or Kuwait. Russia existed for a long time before commercial oil exploration, and will exist for a long time after. In fact, many economists talk about the "Dutch Disease", and how Russia's economy is less effective because of being on the oil "needle".

Oil began to play a decisive role in the Soviet/Russian economy starting in the mid 1970s.

In our proximity there is only one country that has consistently thretened it throughout the ages: Russia in its numerous mutations (imperial, soviet, current cleptocratic).
