I just spiritually channeled Copernicus and he said he'd again side with the Polish crown and fight the Teutonic Knights once more just to prove his Polishness.

Hi. I'd like to point out that Y-chromosome haplogroup is useless when one wants to find what nationality Copernicus was. This chromosome is inherited through the male line. That means that only one male ancestor among hundreds of your grand grand -...-grand ancestors is taken into account. This is useful when we want to find some general trends in human migrations but not when we have to say if somebody is a Pole or a German. It is simply a misconception. People who conduct such reaserch just want to attract attention. They know it proves nothing.

Did he say if he was gay???

I didn't discuss sex with him but he did say that you should switch to kielbasa. He asked if there were any more Teutonic knights that needed their butts kicked.

He did enjoy watching moons

He told me that his Polish heart was elated whenever he watched the heavens.

Did he, huh???

I might need to channeling him myself to clear things up....

If we had a cross cultural sausage it might clear things up. As "brat" is Polish for brother and wurst is German for sausage, we could call a Brat-wurst a "brother sausage" and usher in a new era of cross-cultural understanding.

Although the Germans might complain they had the wurst end of the deal (joke might only work in English)

... a cross cultural sausage...

Now here is an idea... "Brat-Wurst" for everybody!

"Brat-Wurst" for everybody!!!

One world, one people, one sausage!

Of course, the word 'brat' in English means a (horrible) child.

The first couple of minutes of this film show a possible etymology for another kind of brat-wurst.

Copernicus' ethnicity is definitely Polish since his lifestyle and beliefs were much more in line with being a Pole then a German.

All of Copernicus' family were die hard Catholics and hated and resisted the Teutonic Knights. Copernicus and his family would not have done that if they were German.

Also Martin Luther hated Copernicus for being Polish and disparaged him for being Polish.

Even Copernicus' enemies knew Copernicus was Polish.

So, ethnicity is nowadays defined through the lifestyle? That would make all polish kids with baggy-pants to rapping Blacks...interesting to know!

Surprise, surprise? Well he is half German and half Polish. Just like some French want to steal Chopin for being a half French.

i never heard of Copernic being German.and in France Chopin is considered Polish (you can check it in French wikipedia) but on the other hand we think of Marie Curie as a French (although she's obviously is Polish as well)

i never heard of Copernic being German.

Well...that is not his fault....

I dont think Kopernik heard of being German himself, he might be quite suprised if he found out :)

Well he is half German and half Polish.

The problem with the guy is that he never wrote a word in German and while its assumed he wrote in Polish (given that he wrote letters to people who didnt speak German or Latin) there's no evidence of it too.

His name is latinized and has nothing to do with German, there's two things that are undeniable, his mother was German and he was a very loyal subject of Poland :)

Well, he enrolled in the university to Bologna as member of the German Nation!

Nope, he was enrolled in the university of Bologna by his Uncle as a member of German nation, there is no proof whatsoever that Kopernik thought of himself as German, he never wrote a single word in German, not one, every written word we have left is from him is in Latin except for letters to few German friends and associates who were not fluent in Latin, this alone speaks volumes if the guy uses his supposedly German language only if he has to.

As to why Kopernik didnt write in Polish? Because no one wrote in Polish (or few) the Polish language of science and literature at a time was Latin, add to this that the guy was fighting for the Polish king, commanding among other Polish forces in defence of Olsztyn (then Olstyn, before that Allenstein) and we get a pretty good idea of who Kopernik was.

He was half German ethnically of that there is no question but even during his life he chose his allegiance not to mention his father was Polish.

I doubt he spoke one word polish at all...no proof for that!

He was running several estates overseen by Poles and commanded troops from Mazovia where Latin was not popular so yeah given that he studied on a Polish univeristy and interacted with other Poles on a level that required fluent Polish its a pretty safe bet that he did.

Now whether he wrote in Polish its another matter, he did write to several oversees, commoners who wouldnt speak Latin or German but since those letters are not preserved the topic is open.

Mind you if you told Kopernik he was German or Polish he'd probably look at you in a funny way and tell you "i'm a subject of the Polish king" thats how it worked back there.

Leave it Sok, now it gets ridiculous..."mean" uncle Watzenrode!

"i'm a subject of the Polish king"

I wonder why there wasn't any "Polish Nation" to subscribe to in university...;)

It was customary for Poles studing there to sign into German natio - which is not what Germans in XX century understand as a nation!
