I'm sorry to hear of your trouble. Stations in Poland seem to have a way of attracting violence.

I've visited Poland several times--major cities and towns and villages. But almost always with a tour group. Now I am planning to visit Niedzica, Gydnia and surrounding areas. In the past I have felt safe. After reading some of the responses relative to safety in the suburbs, I am beginning to worry about traveling with just my sister. I would appreciate your comments. Also, is public transportation a problem in Niedzica? I will not have a car avaiilable.

I don't know anything about it but if you are as nice as your sister, I'll go with you and ride shotgun.

I'd say you wouldn't have to worry. Couples aren't usually messed with.

Yeah yeah , you guys just try to live in london for a while and then we can do some talking. I have heard some pretty nasty stories, that happened to people i know myself( especially rape is a very common crime now, happens all the time, eg what can you say about dodgy mini cabs? youhardly can get these in Poland!

Also there is a huge problem with teenegers who hung around on the streets and will just scare the **** out of you, if you just dare to walk past them! And if we just talk about stabbings and all sorts of knife attacks, please tell me it doesn't happen on daily basis? Just go to Archway and have a look at the notice boards,

As per the comment that it's eastern europeans, yes it is party true. Lets take romanian gangs who are behid 85 % of money frouds9 i was a victim of one myself) and just get i your way, lucky if you end up alive. I have never hears of polish thugs( or anybody reffering to poles in this manner) however i do admit polish peole commit crimes just like any other nationalities do. So there you go , i keep thinking of going back home more often these days

London is a dangerous place. Period.
I'm repeating myself but my missus has been mugged three times and burgled once. Not nice.

I'm from London and feel fine here, but if i wasn't from here i'm not sure i'd feel so comfortable. I guess any new city can be a bit daunting and uncomfortable sometimes. I think it all comes down to knowing your surroundings.

I'd agree with decorator, home turf does make it safer.
My missus way mugged during the first year she was in the Uk, now she knows the areas better she has not had any problems.

Sorry to hear that Giles but i'm sure it will get better, people are pretty ok as a rule.

Because London has so many people it may not have the intimacy and sense of community that a smaller city would. Good luck in the future.

Have a great weekend..

I have been living in the netherlands sine a year and I know several of my friends who's houses have been robbed since then. just to mention my family (and friends) are quite well-off so the houses are located in good parts of the town.

however, I personally do not know anyone in oland who has experienced such a thing.
As regards the safety, would suggest to refer to crime statistics which are easy to be be found in internet. those can only support my experience.

Oh my Boza, the US has all of you beat. I have been robbed but never raped or mugged. We are just used to being careful. Plus, almost everyone has a gun at home or in the car. My city is going through a lot of murders committed by mostly black and hispanics. Still, I think the rap culture is just creating most of the crime. The pedophile freaks are usually white guys and priests (sorry, it's true).

You just can't carry purses anymore. I put everything in my pockets and wear good shoed if I need to run away.

About the US: We have a huge population here. Statistically then, crime would be higher, as there are more people here to commit crimes. And more opportunity given the number of people versus police/crime deterrent personnel.

But we have a very weird crime stats situation here. And they publish them locally for every municipality every year as well as doing this for universities and colleges so parents can see them prior to sending their kids there.

Places you'd think would be bad for economic or other sociological reasons are not and vice versa. Some hold true to old ways of thinking ie: the poorer areas have the highest crime stats. In cases of resort towns, all that thinking flies out the window as criminals are drawn to these rich areas to fleece the tourists.

See here if you're interested; particularly interesting are the "least safe" and "most safe" cities lists:

Wow, Bookrat. It was prophetic of you to make the above statement based on what happened at Virginia Tech.

Our problem in the US, is that they let all the mentally ill people out of hospitals. Many are left on their own or are homeless. It is difficult to commit people for mental illness unless they are a danger to someone or themselvs. The Korean student was obviously mentally ill. Most people did not fear him because Asians are classified as America's "model minortiy." They are smart and have excellent family structure. Mental illness hits every group.

I'll try to find this somewhere, but they say that only 10% of Americans are criminals. These statistics show that it's similar to any counrty usually at least 90% of people are law abiding citizens( or at least get away with it). It appears that we have much more crime because we are so f*cking huge. The percentages are about the same worldwide.

Because of the huge influx of illegal aliens, our crime is out of control. 30% of federal prisoners are illegal aliens who raped and murdered. 40% of Mexican illegal aliens are high school dropouts. The prisons are mostly holding black and hispanic prisoners. It is really scary. That is why the majority of Americans don't want to give these lawbreakers amnesty. Unfortunately, Poles are included in the illegal population. Most Americans love any European, Asian or African immigrants because they try to speak English.

you need to move to a safer neighborhood. I have lived here all my life , these things
happen in poorer neighborhoods or were its highly populated in bigger cities.
I am sorry to say that, but its true.:)

Polish people should stay in Poland and make a better future for their country and not come to the uk. We have too many Poles here and we cant keep taking you all into this small island.

I also find Polish people very rude, one was about to attack my wife after he pushed past her queue jumping, If I wasnt there Im sure he would have hurt her.

Here in the UK we have manners and ettiquettes, we dont behave like uncivilised yobs and animals.

That one random example in your personal life surely is enough to describe all Polish as very rude. I'm also pretty sure he would've attacked your wife. I mean.. he was Polish after all, we were raised to act like ******* animals to each other withouth any courtesy.

Or... perhaps.. hmm.. crazy wild theory but hear me out.. perhaps the guy was just an ******* no matter what nationality he had & that such things could happen anywhere in the world?

Hmm.. hmmm.. nah, now that I thought about it, that's just crazy.. you're right. It's because he was Polish.
It has probably nothing to do with your hatred & xenophobic attitude towards the Polish minority because you don't like them in your country "stealing your jobs".

Here in the UK we have manners and ettiquettes

I'll drink to that.

I dont see any benefit of this huge easter european influx, albanians, kosovans, etc etc, many operate criminal activities, defraud, and being in the uk in such massive numbers, they are bringing the standards of life to a lower level just like in their own country.

I have seen many rude Polish guys, majority of them are skin heads and remind me of louts with no manners.

I dont have a problem with decent ones, but the masses they are just no good!

What do many of the girls do? Work as strippers and ****** in Londons red light district.

So tell me what positive conribution they are making?

Rant over for today!

Erm, don't want to confuse you, but aside the fact that Kosovo isn't even a country, both with Albania are not part of the EU.

I doubt there acually skinheads buddy probably just shave there heads, shaved heads are popular in eastern europe. And stop sayin this ******** about crime, if a few of us polish or other eastern europeans are doing criminal things you can't say that about every one of us, skin or race has nothing to do with crime

When we hear of English coming here (I don't live in Poland atm) we think "uh oh another football game? those are all hooligans & are going to trash our cities again" Why do we think that? Because it happened before, it still happens & your country (unfortunately) built a reputation for having chavs like that come into another country, drink themselves to death, trash the place & leave as if nothing happened. (Not even counting stabwounds)

So much for British manners.

Are they all this way? Of course not! Am I generalising.. hell yeah.

Is it any different from what you do? No.

I feel sorry for what happened to you & your wife, but this has nothing to do with Poles, we're not any more rude than any other nation. I invite you to come to Poland someday so you can visit our beautiful country & see for yourself.

majority of them are skin heads and remind me of louts with no manners.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but I don't know how old you are, so you may not be "up to date" with youth subcultures. Skinheads have nothing to do with fascim or racism or neo-nazis. Skinheads originated from "mods" (I'm sure you know them) & stuck around since then.

A lot of neo-nazis are skinheads but skinheads can be of any political movement or apolitical. It's a subculture based on music.

A "real" skinhead will wear Martens or other boots to match if not he's either bold or likes the haircut! If they have white laces they're nazis, if they have red shoe laces they're commies, if they have something else, it's just a bloke.. (sorry if this laces thing sounds ridiculous.. thats the way it is :) )

What do many of the girls do? Work as strippers and ****** in Londons red light district.

many operate criminal activities, defraud

Many.. many.. "many" ... You sound like the only thing you read all day is the Daily mirror & BNP tracts.

Take it from us, the vast majority of Poles coming to the UK is trying to work hard in order to save a little money & make a living. We know them, they are our friends, family, acquintances.. That's all. We wish as much as you that the rotten apples would get caught & put out the basket so people like you wouldn't register here just to nag us about it.

As for the prostitution thing, that's a different thing alltogether. Good luck trying to take out, it's in every country of the world & it's never going to go away.

So tell me what positive conribution they are making?

They are working hard for companies in your country, so that people from your country, could benefit. The UK has opened the door for workers from the UK because they needed them.

So either the entire UK suddenly decides to make 4 children instead of 1,4 (which isn't gonna happen with our high standards of living)
or you accept the fact that you need immigrants in order to keep your standard of life high. That's an economic reality.

All:
I'll refer to the newly released Global Peace Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit.
First link mentions Poland as number 27 out of 121 of the World's countries.
- The UK as number 49, so the conclusion is that the UK is a bit more unsafe than Poland.

slovakspectator.sk/clanok.asp?cl=27792

- And the USA's far behind: reuters.com/article/homepageCrisis/idUSN30417228._CH_.2400

And according to this article, with Reuters as their source, my little Denmark should rank as the 3rd most peaceful country in the world. :-)

That's not how I see things. Here in Wroclaw things are OK. Mobile phones do get stolen, that's true.

That is absolutely right - at least in the east. In the west, quite the same, when talking about cities larger than 350000. But, come to my town in Romania, and see hw you can manage in a disco at night, or in the outskirts (I don1t go out but to a blues club or a bar) and go then to Erlangen, Germany, a town equally large, although with a population of only 150000 (my town has 350000). You`ll feel a HUGE difference - so, you can`t really generalize about ALL the cities - small and medium ones are hugely different when comparing East to West. Capitals are dirtier, more mixed, everywhere, just as large cities. And small cities are boring and still in the west, boring and seroiusly dangerous in the east. Yep...
