Poznan: Doctors, Contraceptive Pill ...

Hi all,

I have been living in Poznan for a while, but have had no reason to see a doctor.

Firstly, I was wondering what the deal is with seeing a GP? Do I need to sign up at a surgery, or are there places you can just turn up?

Generally, are GPs able to speak English? Any recommendations for surgeries in Poznan city centre?

Secondly, I may fly back to the UK to get a top up of the contraceptive pill. Was wondering what the deal is in Poland? Is the pill readily available? Has anyone any experience of obtaining the pill in Poland whilst being from the UK (or any other country apart from Poland)? Is it as simple as it is in the UK?

Apologies in advance if I seem unknowledgeable.

Sorry, I can`t help you. But a few expats who frequent this forum should be able to answer your questions.

You'll need a gynecologist for the pill, heres some search results.
google.co.uk/search?q=gynacolog+poznan&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

They usually charge anything from 40 - 80 PLN per appointment/consultation, the pill will obviously be paid for by yourself. Most Polish women get a coil as its cheaper.

maybe email in English and see if any reply. You have health centres which you can make appointments for various issues, either private or NFZ. Maybe ask the Gynacolog for referrals.

Flippen hell how gay am I? but i did feel sorry for you that no Polish women answered and i happen to know a little about this.

Most Polish Doctors are well educated and speak English, but getting past the receptoininst maybe a problem.

This ones in English: certus.med.pl/en

you have to be registered with a GP in a 'przychodnia' (a health centre) but it's actually only one form away from you - if you work here you are already medically insured (unless you work freelance) (you need to have 'legitymacja ubezpieczeniowa' - your employer should arrange you one)

Be careful what you say/do as the UK free NHS consultation and NHS prescription price is dependant on your being UK resident. You said you've been in Poznan for a while ... are you still registered with a doctor in the UK and do you still have a UK address (if your NHS doctor knows you live outside the UK, he/she is duty-bound to get you removed from the system).

If you're staying in Poland, as stated you may already be in the system (PESEL/ZUS) in which case registering here is a formality, albeit one you will most likely require Polish to complete, then you follow the ZUS route to any refund of prescription costs or pay a reduced price for your meds. FWIW, I have a GP who speaks decent English, but a cardiologist and a dentist who do not - luckily I moved to Poland with my Polish partner!

You could try this hospital:

gpsk.am.poznan.pl
It's PoznaƄ's medical university hospital so I would be surprised if someone there didn't speak English if you don't understand Polish.
