British show... what was that?

I was thinking of 2 point 4 children, however wikipaedia tells me it wasn't based on that.

The Polish one does say in its wiki that it was "in the style of" MwC.

it was "in the style of" MwC.

Beyond the title I don't see it... Kiepski didn't really work and his wife was a bit smarter than him (neither true of MwC where both husband and wife were dumb as rocks, just in different ways).

Things do change a lot when a format is adapted. What works in one society on TV doesn't always transfer.

Kiepski didn't really work and his wife was a bit smarter than him

That suits well in Poland. The actors in it were pretty good too.

Did you like Świat według Kiepskich?

No, I have always disliked it - I only watched half of the first episode in 1990s to see why they had advertised it so enthusiastically. That was a complete disaster to me. I believe watching such loser morons in action is a waste of time. I make a sole exception for the genius comedian Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber. ::):)

From another thread:

Everything was better duting Sarmatism. :D

For the most famous Jan Paweł in Polish history maybe... Not for his peasants though! lol

People of PF, I've just remembered that I have new Polish TV series to recommend for you! The latest hit - Netflix's "1670" :D

It is a satire on Polish nobles, serfdom, Polish vices, society, politics, etc., it also touches upon some of today's issues from what I've noticed. I haven't watched all of the episodes yet, but it's been great so far - funny, well made and it's something new and fresh on the Polish market. People from outside of Poland may not catch all the humour and allusions, but from what I've read even foreigners are enjoying it. It apparently has both dubbing and subtitles on Netflix.

If you haven't seen it yet and you have Netflix - go on and watch it! :D Hop, hop, hop! lol

...and Lithuanians..."

Lithuanians betrayed themselves and their ancestors so Lithuania is a failed state. As all Germanized puppet Baltic states. I see modern day territories of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia one day finish as part of Poland and Belarus and maybe even Russia.

"1670" is so quotable that I think it may turn into a cult classic :) 🤔

"God, Honour, Homeland... are the top three causes of death among Polish nobles."

;D

Crow, they should add you to "1670" - you're crazy enough ;D

you're crazy enough

That for sure.

As to the 1670- I love how pretty it is. Being raised Polish I never realised how truly pretty the outfits etc were

Don`t talk like that Paulina. They doing it to themsleves by their suicidal policy. Not to say that we live in era when all artificial constructs of Drang Nach Osten tend to wanish.

That for sure.

O?

I did realise that before! But watching "1670" made me think again that those times in Polish history would be great for quality costume TV series like "The Tudors", etc.

@Torq
I have watched a few episodes so far and plan see the entire series as to be able to fully criticise it to the dust at every possible occasion, so far it has more to do with leftists perception and perspective of modern day Poland and issues they think are unaddressed or ignored by rightists as major and important. I must give the series credit on how it showed the futility of combating the environment tho, the most annoying thing for me of course is how they butcher Sarmatism in every possible worst sense through the main character which comes out as a symbolical person of people who haven't achieved much in life and are grudgingly irritated by it and takes it out on everyone around him and blames everybody else (kind of a Kaczyński or a Polish dad who thinks he is the only one who sees these things, as in the truth from his perspective and feels a duty and his part to point them out at every possible unsuitable occasion while lacking authority that he thinks he has)

Although I must admit that most of the Szlachta were put in a positive light at the Sejmik (although they wanted to increase taxes, but were seen as minding the better of the country, but also it could had been done to underscore the tragedy and clear reason to dislike the main character)

It is a satire on Polish nobles, serfdom,

Nope, it is about III RP that is obvious. Haven for commies and losers that come to an end with the last Tusk gov and his crowing achievement Banan Republic.

or the most famous Jan Paweł in Polish history maybe.

that's for those half-witts who have a very superficial knowledge of Polish history or politics, lol! how crude it is...

Not to say that we live in era when all artificial constructs of Drang Nach Osten tend to wanish.

Do you mean to say that Russia is going to cede Vladyvostoc up to the Baycal Lake to China? Poland has some claims there too, there was a Polish state near the Amur River in 1600.

You guys confuse me :D

Polish folk songs were used in "1670" :) - here's a folk song from the Lublin area called "Kare konie" ("Black Horses"):

When I was watching the dance scenes with those Polish folk songs I couldn't help but think of "Witcher"... Some Poles on the internet commented that they wish the "1670" team made Netflix's "The Witcher" instead of Americans and I can understand this sentiment :)

@Paulina
Besides the esthetics, there is very little of anything resembling 1670 in that series...
Paulina 16 | 4,373
3 Jan 2024 #50
@Mr Grunwald, that's the part of the humour of "1670", the references to our times make these TV series funny and relatable. For example, here you have a reference to fireworks and firecrackers scaring dogs (and other animals) on New Year's Eve:

Paulina 16 | 4,373
3 Jan 2024 #51
The one about New Year's Eve is a promotional video, but here you have a fragment from the actual TV series:

It is of course a reference to the way Polish politicians behave during political debates on TV (the immortal "Ja Panu nie przerywałem!" lol).
Mr Grunwald 32 | 2,173
3 Jan 2024 #52

I don't relate to much, then I see series like that trying to downplay or destroy what I relate to. Of course I will be moody, angry and dissatisfied. This series was not aimed to please people like me. These posts are the result of that, I am not surprised.
Paulina 16 | 4,373
3 Jan 2024 #53
@Mr Grunwald, it's a satire, so it won't be idealising stuff, obviously...

trying to downplay or destroy what I relate to

Namely?
Ironside 53 | 12,420

it's a satire,

Really? On what? Seems to me like a string of lame and not-so-lame jokes. Costumes are there just for comedic effect and a contend is how leftie PRL cultures imagine the world they live in.

Nice costumes and decorations and a few jokes are all right. Funny, maybe. Satire, high brown entertainment it is not. If it was music I would say it is dico-polo.
Paulina 16 | 4,373
3 Jan 2024 #55
Really? On what?

A quote from one of the articles I linked to:

"1670 is a brilliant satire on Polish mentality. Not only on the Sarmatian one, but also contemporary."

If it was music I would say it is dico-polo.

Not all of the jokes are maybe of the highest level, but there's enough of some spot on and clever stuff to make it worth a watch, imho. I haven't seen all the episodes yet and the ones I've seen - I watched them when I was really sick with a nasty cold, so I'll wait with a final opinion until I watch all of them.

But even the idea in itself for those TV series is great and something new and fresh (at least as far as Polish productions are concerned) :)

I actually watched both your music videos in full, hoping to find some uplifting Slavonic Music.
But all I got was a fat, bald, old guy, with a stupid beard, tattoos and wearing robes!
And the music was like South American Punk Rock......... awful!!
