The other fact is that PRL as well as Kremlin rules did not want another Noble Prize to go to a so called dissident from the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain.

So they could and would do a lot to besmudge someone reputation to lie or manufacture mental health issues and so on.
Don't know that a standard practice of the Soviet Union was to put those who degraded the ruling system into mental hospitals as oft as into gulags.

Yes, but we are talking about a professional biographer who knows how to sieve off useless or false info and dig for the truth. It has been proven that Herbert suffered from a biopolar disorder and it wasn` the Soviet intrigue.
