I left out the classic old bands Budka Suflera,Perfekt,Lady Pank and Dzem from my original post because my list was getting too long.

As for all the other artists you posted,I like most of them too.
The only ones that are not to my taste are Atrakcyjny Kazmierz and Mydelko Fa....sorry Mafketis,but that's probably more a reflection of me and not the music.

Of the newer artists,I like Goya and Kayah best.
Maybe someone should tell Crow what a great album Bregovic made with Kayah..... :-)

After being in Poland several months in 1991 I played Polish music for American graduate students (doktoranci) mostly in social sciences and/or latin american studies. To a person the song they liked best was mydełko fa (stare dobre małżeństwo and marek grechuta bored them to tears).

I like Grechuta - but you need to understand the lyrics. And I need to admit I know only his greatest hits.

I thought I'd start a thread about Polish Pop/Rock music as the quality and breadth of Polish music has hugely increased in recent years.

I hope this thread is left alone by the mods and not merged so that it disappears forever......

(I love Brodka's cover of 'Wszystko czego dziś chce' but that's more for the video than the song itself.
And a highly sexualized strip club is not very transgressive now, Trojanowska's performance wearing a man's suit no less was transgressive and brave in the stuffy PRL, but no one's shocked by strippers any more....

Jolly good scheme. There have been many Polish bands who are superb musicians, but if you are talking about music as something that moves you, and takes you on a journey, then one group stood alone. IMO, and that of millions of Poles.

Nah! Not at all M (blushing smiley). I knows as much or as little as the next music fan. You're right that music matters though:) I was impressed by Mafs' choices (Dzem are an obvious choice; they have been both honoured, and villified - for carrying on without Reidel and Berger - but it's their whole existence). AS for rock and blues, I used to hang out with some of the Katowice musos in another life, not that they knew or cared "who" I was, but they sometimes invited me into their homes, and all of them were extremely intelligent and likeable people to a man (and woman)

Wilki couldn't quite bring it to the Czeslaw Niemen cover they did, for me - because he was another of the unique talents.

Lombard were unashamedly a ripoff of Roxette, but I actually prefer Ostrowska's voice.

It is our ONLY universal language.

We all know that Polish literature,poetry,music,in fact all Polish arts can be quite dark.....it must be something in our history.... LOL!
