Official translator at tax office in Poland. May I refuse?

I've been asked to give a witness statement at the tax office - have done this before a few times so I know it only takes an hour or so but in this case they want me to do it about two hours drive away.

The other stupid thing is that they want me to get an official translator even though in the past I have just either done it myself or taken my PA there - that is obviously going to add a lot of cost plus the grim experience of sharing a car journey with a tlumacz ?

I understand the fine for not turning up is about PLN 3k - are there any other negative effects if I just refuse to take a translator ? As normal there is no phone number where you can just ring them up and ask.

Hire a sworn translator who lives in the town you're going to. Simples!

I assume you have received an official letter. The letter should be signed and stamped. There stamp (or the letter head) should contain a phone no. You call the number and ask for the person who wrote the letter. Again, simples!

Remarkably enough I looked for a phone number and there is not one on the stamp or the letterhead.

But they have now said they will pay for the translator and try and switch it back to Poznan. The only reason I had to go elsewhere was that the Poznan office was too busy to handle it and it was for a very old case - told them this was hardly fair, so a minor victory over the bureaucrats :)
