Could "chochlik" be a good translation for a troll (eg. a forum troll?) It sounds weird though, maybe good enough for kids.

Chochlik is cheerful. Troll is bitter.

What is the proper translation into English: "Jest osiem majtek na statku"

There's no exact equivalent. These are similar in meaningf but not the same. If it's meant sexually or romantically "like a kid in a sweet shop" (AmEng 'candy store'). If it's about workplaces and said very negatively, "hag-ridden" is similar however that is a misogynistic term and people might not like to hear it.

You can say "like a cockerel in a hen house" however again, that could be interpreted sexually.

I was told it is a play on words (majtek = deckhand, but could also mean panties). My Polish friends often play on me with these translation puzzles.

Yes, it's a play on words.

Jest osiem majtek na statku,
is not the same as
Jest ośmiu majtkow na statku.

They're close enough for the similarity to be obvious and amusing.
