History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

All aircrew were initial trained on bycycles for formation flying,in fact the Modern RAF still uses this practice,in the Red Arrows, and no one complains about their lack of skill.

That's a great teaching technique for the inexperienced. Not for the few in RAF who actually had experience, not only flying but actually fighting against German pilots.

to sweeping ly imply that the Poles were the only trained Pilots is utterly ludecrus.

Did anyone imply that here?

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Russia has still got half of 'Old Poland' and that should suffice unless of course, Poland wants to buy it back!

Oh boy.
So now it appears you don't know basic geography of the area.

You know what?
You go ahead and complete grade 5 education, then come back and we'll talk, OK?

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

I read somewhere that 1 in 3 RAF pilots were Polish.

My sources tell me Polish pilots constituted 5% of RAF during the Battle of Britain. They were responsible for a disproportionately high number of kills (12%), even though they were allowed to join the Battle when it was about 1/2 way through.

The Brits did not believe Poles could actually fly, so they made them train flying formations on the ground using tricycles. Some of the best pilots in Europe (and possibly the world) during WW2 were riding tricycles while British rookies were slaughtered in the air.

Lt-Colonel - Gabreski of USAF In 1943 joined RAF 315-th (Polish) Fighter Squadron "Deblinski" since the Americans believed he was not good enough to join any of their air units. He became the top U.S. ace of WW2 in Europe with 28 air-to-air combat victories and 2 enemy planes destroyed on the ground. Gabreski's parents were both Polish.

If you want to learn more I recommend this book: Question-Honor-Kosciuszko-Squadron-Forgotten.

I suppose that Poland, being in the middle, so to speak, can afford the 'hedge its bets' and knowing that the West is richer and is more able to help Poland economically

Russia being unable to steal from Poland is a step in the right direction in the first place.

it is wiser to say 'we are part of the West' rather than siding with poorer Russia.

Yes. I hope you don't have a problem with that, as I'm sure you didn't have a problem with Russia accepting $979 million in from US in 2001, and $200 million from EU in 2000.

(how does that pot and kettle proverb go?)

it's $hit, but it's not used in the same context as the English "oh $hit". Poles usually will say "O kurwa", and a varitey of others.

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

Did I hear a Lithuanian use the word today, or was that my imagination.

The word is ancient, and according to Polish etymologists, of Slavonic origin, and it is not derived from Latin "curvus"

Latvian 'kurva'
Lithuanian 'kurva'
Serbocroatian 'kurva'

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

The 'Elementarz' going on about 'Bambo', is that word not now altered to 'Bambus' and used in a derogatory way in Poland?

That's incorrect.
Any altering was not so recent. The word "bambo" and "bambus" have existed in parallel for decades, even when I was in grade 1. Kinda like niqqer and Niger/Nigeria

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

The Poles are certainly Central European and are not really the same race as the Russians at all. The Russians are tougher

Lie expectancy: (females/males/avg)
Poland 75.6/71.3/79.8
Russia 65.5/59.0/72.6

Russians came from Mongolia and probably therefore have more in common with the Turks

You need to brush up your IndoEuropean history.
Russians did not come from Mongolia. Mongols came from Mongolia and Ruled Russians for 300 year.

That is why in 1945, Europe was saved by the Russians, almost single handedly.

Saved? Millions in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Germany, Czechoslovakia etc, did not feel saved at all. As a matter of fact, in some of those countrie WW2 ended in 1989.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Let's settle on centre of the known universe then

Ya know, considering how your head may be sometimes spinning when you're in Poland... yeah, that is a possibility ;)

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Well, if Europe's center is indeed in Poland, and if Poland's area is greater than that central point (which seems to be true) then Poland is in CNESW (center, north, east, south and west).

Was African slavery so widespread in Polish history? And if so, how many Polish speaking black people are these Polish phrases associated with slavery going to offend?

That's something I was gonna suggest myself.
By the time I left Poland at the in 1987 I saw in person maybe 5 person of African descend.

The word "murzyn" was taught to Polish kids in grade one in Elementarz

Murzynek Bambo w Afryce mieszka,
Czarną ma skórę ten nasz koleżka.
Uczy się pilnie przez całe ranki
Ze swej murzyńskiej pierwszej czytanki.
A gdy do domu ze szkoły wraca,
Psoci, figluje - to jego praca.
Aż mama krzyczy: "Bambo łobuzie!",
A Bambo czarną nadyma buzię.
Mama powiada: "Napij się mleka",
A on na drzewo mamie ucieka.
Mama powiada: "Chodź do kąpieli",
A on się boi, że się wybieli.
Lecz mama kocha swojego synka,
Bo dobry chłopiec z tego Murzynka.
Szkoda, że Bambo czarny wesoły,
Nie chodzi razem z nami do szkoły.

The lst two lines of this little poeam can be roughly translated as:
It's a pity that Bambo, black and cheerful
Doesn't attend school with us.

Off-Topic / Are Polish Christians here? [134]

There are very few Christians who adhere to what the Bible says.
If you were to follow everything, there would be no priests and church hierarchy.

Actually, it is no physically possible to follow everything the Bible says. Too many contradictions. Also, when one considers the number of Christian denominations (each of them claiming theirs is the only true path to the truth and correct interpretation of the Bible) then it become glaringly obvious that literal approach to what the book says is impossible.

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

frajer, so that is slang for jerk?

Sometimes there may be a direct equivalent, but I'd say "frajer" in general "frajer" is used to described a person who is easily deceived/cheated/confused, as in "szukasz frajera?" (do you think I'm an idiot?/ are you looking for a dumbas.s?)

Yet that doesn't justify the slavery, regardless who was benefiting from it, correct?

You asked for a source. Neither the source, nor the post pointing to it make and attempt to justify slavery.

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1033]

"ciumek" is an informal word which derives from "ciumkac", It means to kiss or to produce kissing sound. Ciumek would then mean a person who kisses or is kissed, and it is likely an endearing term , except when context may clearly indicate otherwise, or in some slang expressions such as "ciumkać bigosa" (to masturbate)

Food / Polish Sour Milk / Maślanka [44]

Some Polish dishes are made by letting them stand for days, like żurek, bigos, serwatka, kwaśne mleko.

They are not "let" stand for days. That's how you make them, or how you make them acquire the right taste. (think wine)

Food / Polish Sour Milk / Maślanka [44]

that method can be also used to make your own cottage cheese. One difference though - you don't just heat it up, but instead keep it on low heat for a few hours until you see the white stuff is separated from the watery (yellowy color) fluid. The next step is to drain the whole thing with cottage cloth (ususaly overnight) , and thus be ready to make a real cheese cake.

Travel / Photos from Poland [258]

in relation to your post of some girls drink through straws ... i commented on the fact i dont you see i am a vodka drinker and i have never seen anyone drink vodka through a straw

In the olden days (OK, when I was a student back in Poland) , using straw to drink alcohol was a simple way to get drunk fast, while economizing on the amount of alcohol needed. Straws were used for beer, but I never saw anyone use them for vodka. To boost, and accelerate the effect of vodka they drank it using tea or table spoons. Or simply little glass shots, but the trick was not to let it go down right away, but rinse your mouth with the drink, holding it in your mouth for a few seconds to about a minute.

News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

Poles arent about intergrating into out society , they bring there own culture , throw it in our faces, use the U.K's "soft touch" appeal for there own uses and then go back to poland with the profits...kinda sounds like your examples of other countires.

I had a chucklel when I read that :)

Off-Topic / Do politicians need to speak a foreign language? [15]

Have you ever seen Tony Blair or George Bush speaking fluently any other language?

Actually, I have always Bush speaking a foreign language and he has been always fluent. I could understand the words but I couldn't make any sense out of them.
