Language / Kurwa? at end of every sentence [51]

Until recently I always thought the word "kurwa" was just used like a comma in a sentence.

Life / Polish general knowledge quiz.(for foreigners) [28]

Thank for running the quiz a.k.. Well 50% is not too bad:) I was looking for trick questions and should have had No 20 correct as it's the same in most countries. I also knew the Berlin wall fell in 1989, but for some reason I thought I'd read that the communists stayed for another two years PL. My bad:)

Love / Help me understand the different mannerisms and mentality of men in Przemysl area! [28]

It seems the OP may have made an"error of judgement" in her post and some members have now corrected her. I'm quite sure that she didn't expect the thread to go this way and would omit that sentence if she could turn back time.

The thread is now reopened in the hope that someone can advise her on her original question about Przemysl.

UK, Ireland / Feedback needed from Poles confused about English [12]

In the UK there are so many different accents that they might sound the same. A person would probably need to speak very clear to hear the difference. However you could still tell the difference by the context of the sentence.

News / Damien Perquis Football player granted Polish citizenship insulted by the PIS ? [30]

Hasn't sport in general degenerated into yet another mega-comemrcial venture with little of the 'noble rivalry' left? It's all about pricey transfers, broadcasting rights

It has indeed! Football stopped being a sport a few years ago and has become a big business for players, clubs, the FA and FIFA. Until there is a cap put on the ridiculous money involved in the game, most stadiums in the future will have empty seats, as fans won't be able afford to pay the inflated prices for tickets every season.

Language / Pronunciation difficulties for Poles speaking English [40]

" but , hut " - like Polish "a "

I think this must be the same as ś and sz. Hard to tell the difference straight away. Not many British people would put a hut on their head on a cold January morning.

"succint" - like Polish "y" why do you pronunce it more like Polish " syksynt " is a total puzzle for me .

Just glad this word doesn't come up much in everyday conversation.:)

News / Polish hero pilot lands 767 without wheels. (Warsaw) [191]

Why doesn't the quote function work from anymore? Well, at least from an iPhone? It sucks to have to type the HTML code just to quote someone! :(

Time to put that iphone on eBay mate, and buy yourself a net book! :) Perhaps you should take this up with Apple?

Language / Speaking with wrong Polish case endings? [94]

The guideline for the " General Language* section is "This is a place for learners of the Polish language".

why is mine the only post with red comments all over it?.:)

Because at the time of writing, yours was the latest post.

Are they a deliberately set trap for foreigners? ;)

What about Prosię and Proszę? A Polish trap for foreigners? :)

Feedback / Why are threads deleted or send off topic list? [65]

If you're referring to to threads which you started, that were just random football results and nothing to do with Poland or Poland related, then you will probably find them in the random chat thread (aka the bin). Continuing to do so will also get you a "czerwona karta" so think twice.

Double standards

No double standards. When the competition started there was a Polish team in it, so it was Poland related, as will be Euro 2012 when it starts..

Language / "Hilarious" Mistakes? (Esp. Across Polish and other Slavic Languages) [70]

i know my use of the polish language is terrible. now i feel really disheartened. think i will give up now. everyone else on this site has at least basic command of it. my polish is crap and now i feel i am embarrassing myself.

This is the sort trouble you will find when you learn without a good grammar book. Most books will point out that there is a formal and informal way of speaking to strangers, elders and good friends. Just my two "grosze" worth ;)

Language / 24 hour time telling in Poland vs. other countries [29]

So, when a Polish student invites his English or American friend to a party at 17.00, what are his chances of being understood?

I would have to go along with the others. A person in the UK should be able to work out quickly that 17.00 is 5pm. Most people would just add am or pm for meeting or party invites.

Law / MISTAKES IN CERTIFICATE OF INCORPORATION - FAKE DOCUMENT? [7]

This can't be a real document, can it?

I wouldn't have much faith in a company which produced a document like that. Seems like it has already been translated from a foreign language into English (Bad English) I would have thought a genuine company would have had it proof-read before release too.

History / Are there still communists in Poland? [58]

What do you guys think about it?

Maybe tomorrow when you walk past, you could take a photo of this police station and picture, so that we all know you're not just imagining all this?

Is this what you want for him?

I wouldn't wish that on anyone, just worried that this guy might require medical attention:)

Love / Polish men calling polish girl for dating englishman [80]

Do you think the above was really written by an English native?

Do you believe every English native writes perfect English? Not saying your theory is wrong, you may well be correct.

Genealogy / Mackowiak surname, Maćkowiak [17]

Pol3 has said in his post that it originated as patronymic tags from first names, so I would guess it may not be from a place etc. I'm sure Pol3 will add some extra information later:)
