News / A Polish u-boat calls for help? [16]

New military tactics - a total surprise for Russians. :)

I asked my cousin (an army major) about it, and he says that Baltic is a relatively small body of water, so it can be covered with proper surface-to-water missiles, that's why we bought Norwegian Kongsberg NSM missiles and we are building up the rocket forces. One rocket can sink one ship, so I suppose it's cheaper.

Better no war at all. Unfortunately, si vis pacem para bellum and all that, so we have to spend all the money for weapons instead of more useful things and more pressing needs. :-/

What's wrong with humanity? Christians explain it with original sin - the crack in sinful human nature that makes it desire wealth and power, hence all the wars and billions upon billions spent on armies. I wonder how atheists explain the dark side of human nature and the tendency towards greed, lust and evil in general.

Hmmmm.....then God had made his children so, isn't it?

God granted his children a certain measure of free will, which they abuse by rebelling against Him and His law.

So....better fight the future fights not on battle fields but find a better, pragmatic, not so destrutive solution!

Exactly. And a great solution to fight peacefully has already been invented - FOOTBALL... but we still have wars :(

Off-Topic / How do Russians truly feel about their great leader? [77]

Russian people approves him.

Probably because they don't know any better. I bet that if Russian people experienced higher quality of life under democratic leadership (not only in Moscow and larger cities, but in the entire country) they wouldn't want to go back to living in a totalitarian regime.

Off-Topic / How do Russians truly feel about their great leader? [77]

it was looting of resources and destroying industrial potential

Yes, we experienced something similar in Poland (albeit on a smaller scale) after the fall of communism too. In Russia, apparently, the scale of theft was immense -- all those oligarchs worth billions upon billions (in hard currency!). I wonder how powerful Russia would be, with all her resources and know-how, if it was governed like Germany (or at least like Poland). A superpower undoubtedly.

honest politicians

Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it? However, there is some truth in it, even if a politician is a thief then it would seem better, in some circumstances, to have one thief who has already stolen enough to last him a lifetime than choose a new set of thieves, who want to make a fortune for themselves, every four years. :) That's why liberal democracy doesn't work in some countries.

So, print your recommendations on a heavy glossy paper, roll into tube, and stick them yourself to the right place. ;)

Ha ha - good one. :) If the current Putin's regime is what Russian people genuinely want, then I suppose it's their democratic right (however, Tacitus raised a valid objection in post #65).

Do Russians and Poles get along?

Russian and Poles - yes, no problem. Russian and Polish governments - not so much. ;)

Korwin, frequently appears on Russian TV as an expert on Polish Russian affairs.

Well, he is an expert on pretty much everything in the entire Universe, isn't he? :)

a big problem. Average Russian wants to be like Poles, average Pole don't want to be like Russians

It may be true, but it doesn't mean that they can't get along.

I kept my fingers crossed for Germany after the English fans whistled during the German anthem. Such behaviour is against the spirit of football.

If Italy beat Belgium in the QF, they will win the whole thing.

But if Germany wouldn't had been kicked out today the dreariness would only had dragged on a bit longer.....better now!

Good point. German NT needs a change, and considering the potential of your football we can be sure that you will be back to your winning ways soon. I wish I could say the same about our Eagles. *epic eyeroll*

Hopefully! We need more stability but constant changes of selekcjoner are not helping to achieve that.

Flick will build a winning machine, I'm sure :)

Don't know about Eastern Europe, but in Central Europe such things are frowned upon. German NT was welcomed with applause during their last game against our NT in Warsaw. That's the spirit of sport. Let's kick cheap chauvinism out of football. :)

Life / The Pole, as an example of a perfect Russophobe, in a spherical vacuum [42]

I don't think you have to be biased against Poles to be able to state that they are generally dismissive of all things Russian.

A knee-jerk defensive reaction, after the trauma of partitions, uprisings and 45 years of forced "friendship". The reaction towards Russian state is quite understandable.

When it comes to attitude towards Russian people, you won't see much hostility or dismissiveness. Russian people are indeed Slavic, like we are, but they belong to a different civilisation (Byzantine with elements of Turanic, in contrast to Latin civilisation in Poland), so we are simply closer socially and culturally not only to Czechs or Slovaks (obviously) but also to Italians or the French - the same civilisation. So, what you see as dismissiveness is simply a realistic reception of a nation that is culturally, socially and politically very different from ours.

Mafketis is also quite right in his remarks about countries that tasted Russian "friendship" and don't really want to have anything more to do with the Russian state. It's not dismisiveness or hostility, but merely a political realism acquired during the long history of mutual contacts.

Surely, there is much to be admired about Russia - beautiful nature, great literature, brave and resilient people to name just a few things. But we prefer to admire these things from a safe distance.

I'm glad the "Swiss" lost on penalties. Just look at their starting eleven: Rodriguez, Akanji, Zakaria, Shaqiri, Embolo, Seferović (plus Gavranovic, Fernandes, Lotomba, Mbabu, Mvogo, Vargas, Xhaka). And Switzerland, as far as I know, never had any colonies. I can understand a two or three "stranieri" in an NT, but not more than half a team! This is ridiculous.

And two of the mercenaries missed penalties :) Good riddance.

It's 2021, GK.

Don't call me goalkeeper, I played left back all my life. ;)

as Torqi calls the French NT: The United African National Team

Don't know this Torqi fellow, but he sounds like a sensible guy to me. :)

classless

Just as Gary Lineker saying that Danielsson's tackle on Bessedin was clear and didn't deserve the red card. :-/ There is something profoundly wrong about English perception of the game. That's why I always support whomever they play against.

class, sportsmanship, and respect is desperately needed!

Exactly.

And the English "class" could be seen from the very start of their game against Germany when they were booing and whistling during the German anthem. And later they wonder why they are the least liked national team outside their country. *sighs*

I come from an American football background

Which is perfectly OK, as long as you don't use the word "football" to describe the sport in question.

Armorball or cyborgball could serve as valuable, and more appropriate, lexical choices.

News / Should Poland leave the EU institution? [147]

Going it alone is a sure way to lose

True.

Although a lot depends on how the UK will fare outside the EU. If they end up better off being outside, then the eurosceptic forces throughout the Union will be strenghtened immensely.

@photo above:

11 goals for our national team in exchange for a moderately attractive blonde? That's a bargain! We have throngs of blondes and not nearly enough NT goals. :)

However, I don't see the connection with the EU here (Olisadebe was from Nigeria, as far as I can remember).

All the semi-finalists played their group-stage games at home in Denmark, England, Spain and Italy, without having to spend hours travelling all over the continent (Poland, for example, had to fly to Russia, then to Spain, and then back to Russia again, with base in Gdansk, so they spent more time at the airports and in the air, in constant transition from one place to another, then they did preparing for the games).

Euro "2020" will be remembered in history as the most unfair and ridiculous tournament in the competition history. May such idiocy never again take place.
