1. Bratwurst Boy - cultured, well-informed and kind; besides, we are alte Kameraden since I don't even remember when ;)
2. Bobko - even zoological Russophobes must admit that the guy is charming :)
3. AntV - the best America has to offer in forum users department!
4. Paulina - because she is a proud local patriot and an interesting hybrid of a charming lady and a fire-breathing dragon :)

I am. It was just a joke (not funny and incomprehensible).

Another version of your joke ends with the devil saying to the Pole: "I knew you wouldn't have the guts to jump", so the Pole jumps.

Anyways, the cow in kalosze joke wins the Suchar of the Year award easily. :)

It is rather easy to cause a furore in Ukraine these days. I think they have as much chance of keeping lands with Russian majority as Serbia had of keeping lands with Albanian majority. Why would they even want to keep them? If a majority of people doesn't want to be in the same country with you, to the point of starting an armed rebellion, why not grant them their freedom and independence?


This sentence would be true if Ukraine and only Ukraine could fight this war without any outside support. In their current situation they would be well advised to take their allies' opinion into account.

Ukraine's problem, in my opinion, is the difference between what they are and what they would like to be. Of course, you can want to be a nationalistic, mono-ethnic, mono-lingual, chauvinistic state - knock yourselves out - but if your current borders stretch waaaaay beyond what might be considered your core ethnic lands, then it is bound to end up badly. It is in Scotland though. I very often heard "bollox" used there with the meaning of "nonsense"/"bullsh*t" (e.g. "what a load of bollox").

EDIT: it was used by Celtic Glasgow supporters, so maybe it's an Irish thing... don't remember hearing it in Ireland though... hmm...

Well, to some extent one might argue than nations rarely change. Do you really believe that German or Ukrainian national character have changed so much since WW2? Characters might not change but the conduct of nations under different leaders can change a lot. Hence my hopes for Russia under a different leader.

One way or another, I refuse to accept that Poland and Russia are doomed for eternal enmity. It's inhumane, unchristian and impractical.

A very good question indeed. I think that we need to keep all the historical factors mentioned in the article in mind when we deal with Russia, and be very (and I mean VERY) weary of people who try to dehumanise Russians and portray them as uncultured unwashed barbarians.

Putin will be gone one day but the Russian nation will remain. A brotherly, Slavic nation, who got lost somewhere in the way, wandered too far away from the Slavic camp in their eastward escapade to pursuit wild Mongol frontiers - yes - but a brotherly nation nonetheless. Put that in your collective pipe and smoke it, guys.

I'm not so sure - he said "podstawowym zagrożeniem dla Europy Wschodniej (...) Tam żywe jest jeszcze", so it looks like he meant Eastern Europe. One way or another he warned us here about the cultural dangers coming from the West not from the East.
