She told me she cried when Stalin died, even though he killed 90%+ of her family.

What? Maybe she meant tears of joy?

Now tell me, this is different in any other country in Eastern Europe?

In Eastern Europe, probably not. You could even find some examples of this in Central Europe - like with PiS voters in Poland - "they steal but at least they give money for children, give us the 13th and 14th pension, build a lot of infrastructure etc." - without analysing things like taxes, inflation, currency value etc. This I can understand. But still, PiS voter base is something like about 30% (and dwindling). What is the popular support for Putin and United Russia?

Also, PiS supporters will defend their party and believe any lie they hear from Kaczyński - they don't "disdainfully ignore" the lies but rather mindlessly swallow them like young pelicans. Luckily they are a minority (30% of those who go to vote is more like 20% of all voters - 1/5th).

Russians have always seen themselves in opposition to the "government", but stalwartly behind the "motherland". (...) In Russia the government and the people live on separate planets.

Hmm... when I hear all those babushkas on YouTube, explaining to me how great Putin is, I have my doubts. But very well, let's assume - just for the sake of argument - that what you say is accurate and that there is indeed this deep rift between Russian people and their government. Wouldn't such stark dichotomy eventually lead to... I don't know... some sort of collective schizophrenia? I mean, people would eventually either go mad or start believing those lies, embracing them as their own worldview.

Can you honestly say that it isn't anything like what's happening in Russia?

Yes, you've got a point there.

However, I don't buy this Russian "specific feeling towards truth". Since the advent of communism your people tolerated, or even embraced, such an amount of pure lies on every level that they had to have some propensity towards it before.

I'll give you a fairly recent example of what I mean...

Soviet 1st Belarussian Front HQ in winter 1945:

"Guys, come to us for the talks; there's a lot of things we need to discuss. The German defeat is coming soon and we have to consult you on some very important matters. Oh, come on now - you have our full warrant of safety. It's not like we're going to imprison you, transport to Moscow and stage a fake trial against you there!"

Polish Secret State and underground army leaders:

"Just some peaceful talks? Warrant of safety? OK. Very well then - let's go talk to the Russians."

*rolls eyes*

The problem may be that at some point they started believing their own stories.

Yip. The most disastrous schoolboy mistake - start believing your own propaganda.

Where does this come from?

This very forum, for example. Remember how your buddy Velund lied through his teeth that the Russian forces along Ukrainian borders are there merely on exercise. He said this until the very day of invasion! Now, he's not a complete and utter idiot to have believed that, so he must have been lying.

Also, since the beginning of this war your media and government officials spat out such a river of lies that it would shock even the most cunning Tatar.

Is this just a modern phenomenon, because of Communism, or were Russians known as liars before as well?

Hmm... fairly recent, I'd say. Before that it was as you say - naive and lazy were the main stereotypes but there was always this hint of a "cunning Asian" behind it. There is a good PhD there somewhere, for some diligent and unbiased researcher.

Life / Poland: worst teeth in the world? [98]

I much prefer Russians to talk about the hygiene in Poland and dental healthcare in general

Erm... I dunno... they are good at poetry, love songs, lying and drinking, and they should stick to that. Hygiene and dental care sound like something a German and a Swiss might discuss with great passion, but a Pole and a Russian? Not really.

Another twelve year old thread resurrected just to hurt our precious feelings. :D You're horrible, Bobko! I think I shall call you Bobspana from now on.

Unfortunately for Russia, no matter how few bidets Poles have, how much our arses smell and how rotten our teeth are, you will still lose this war, Putin is still a cowardly war criminal and Russian footballers/hockeyist can play with their d*cks but not in the European/World competitions. Just to put things in perspective. :)

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [325]

Wtf is wrong with you? That "mob" were people who's country got invaded (...) a$$hole.

Yes, their country got invaded and their closed ones killed. That's why it's completely understandable that they got angry because of that. For the reason of this anger, they gathered together and formed an angry mob to stop the ambassador from laying flowers in the cemetery. When people are angry and they form a mob, then that's what we call angry mob. What's your problem?

your sickening RuSSophilia

you are prejudiced against common Ukrainians

Now, let's not get too emotional here. Neither my Russophilia (which I never denied but which was severely weakened by this nonsensical war and numerous Russian war crimes) nor my evident lack of deep romantic love for a certain segment of Ukrainian society (which I like to tenderly call banderopithecs) are even remotely relevant here. There are laws and international conventions that we - as a Latin civilisation country - have to follow. Dura lex sed lex and all that.

How should we know that you aren`t a PiS Church agent

You can't know this. That's the whole point in being a secret agent. :)

He does it quite well himself without needing any help from me in this matter.

Now, tell us your solution to the problem. We would gladly read and learn.

My solution is simple: the police should have dispersed the mob and make it possible for the embassy delegation to lay flowers. As I said, either we are hosts in our own country or we allow angry Ukrainian mob to run things.

There would have been no such problem if we had followed the example of Lithuania and had broken the relations with Russia, but as long as the official relations are maintained we have to follow the law and international conventions.

Poland didn't invade RuSSia or, let us say, Belarus, in 2022

No, but we have been providing substantial help for Ukrainian war effort, which could easily be interpreted as a hostile act and "spontaneous protests" staged to make it impossible for our delegation to visit Katyń last month. No such thing happened.

Prove it!

What? Pawian, you are getting old and demented - when have I ever proved anything on this board??? Don't be ridiculous. :)

You are applying incorrect proportions now.

It's not about proportions really but about this pesky little feeling that we didn't do our duty as hosts towards our guests because other guests decided that they don't like it. As a host in my own country I feel a bit uneasy about it. Oh, well...

What`s your problem??? :)

The right of Russian embassy to honour their war cemetery was denied, with stark violation to both the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and Ustawa o grobach i cmentarzach wojennych - that's my problem. We are either a lawful country and hosts in our own land or we allow angry Ukrainian mob to run things. Tertium non datur.

*off to get some sleep* Good night.

News / Incredible news from Poland - The president shaved his moustache! [83]

Has there been any updates on this ?

Probably Lukashenka invented a new way of smuggling muslim immigrants into Poland. The baloon has probably already landed on some German field and the passengers rejoined their families in Germany. All's well that ends well.

A more enlightened, less controvercial version of a typical rightist?

Exactly - a Tygodnik Powszechny, "Kościół łagiewnicki" type of guy. The Church is a 2000-year-old institution - they haven't survived for that long by putting all their eggs in one basket (PiS). Hołownia is their man in case PiS loses and the opposition takes power.

people have come to the place to protest against the brutal war Russians started

They didn't come to protest against the war but to make it impossible for the embassy delegation to lay the flowers in the cemetery. And the police didn't do their job properly either.

As much as we all hate what Russia is doing in Ukraine the facts are simple:

1. We have laws in Poland about war graves and cemeteries (Ustawa o grobach i cmentarzach wojennych).
2. There is a Russian embassy in Poland (we didn't break diplomatic relations).
3. Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations still applies to Russian embassies in Poland and vice versa.

So, does the Russian embassador have the right to visit their war cemetery? Yes. Was the Russian delegation properly protected from the mob by the police (as they should be)? No.

It is an embarassment really, especially that a month before the incident - on 10th April - the delegation of Polish embassy in Moscow, led by the ambassador Krzysztof Krajewski, visited our cemetery in Katyń without any obstacles from the Russian side.

They were patriots of Ukraine

Patriots of Ukraine, possibly, but only guests in Poland, not the hosts - and the role of the hosts taking care of cemeteries and diplomatic relations is ours.

Congrats. :):):)

I'm doing what I can to keep the board alive. :)

Yes, it is. There were too many accidents of the entire hospital wards collapsing under the sheer weight of Polish balls, so the operations had to be stopped.

OK, Pawian - so what's your opinion about the mob (consisting mostly of Ukrainians) not allowing Russian ambassador to lay flowers in The Soviet Military Cemetery in Warsaw recently? And of the police not doing enough to enable the Russian delegation the entrance to the cemetery?

I, for once, am deeply ashamed about the incident.

Those aren`t monuments to soldiers, but to the Red Army

Wasn't the one in Głubczyce dedicated to the 676 soldiers who died liberating the town?

Individual soldiers of the Red Army are honoured in cemeteries which are well taken care of.

Yes. It would be a scandal and an embarassment if it wasn't the case.

Very controversial opinion

Not that controversial and not that uncommon among Poles.

Pawian will disagree and probably sling some mud on me, but I really think we should leave the monuments for simple soldiers alone.

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [325]

I find it really amasing it had survived till our times. Its end should have taken place 30 years ago.

I'm not so sure about that. The monuments of Lenin, prominent communists or Russian commanders/generals were very rightly removed, but why destroy the monuments of soldiers? After all they had very little to do with politics and gave their lives to kick Nazis out of Poland; Nazis whose objective - after murdering all the Jews - was to either exterminate Poles or turn them into slave labor force. Those soldiers defeated Wehrmacht, liberated the concentration camps and brought a kind of freedom for Poland (limited and bitter but still). Their victory meant life for Poles (both Christians and Jews) and the end of Nazi-German nightmare.

I would leave the monuments for soldiers alone. Just sayin.

Hołownia

Another Palikot or Petru, only worse because we don't really know who's pulling his strings (probably the Church), as he never revealed where the funds for his presidential campaign came from, and he seems to be mentally unstable (crying over the constiutution lol). Also, failure to get higher education these days, when even my neighbour's cat would easily get a magister degree at any uni, doesn't reflect well on the guy.

Those guys get into bed with anyone.

Yes, and they restrain their coalition partner from any extreme ideas (leftist or rightist). They are exactly the commonsensical, centre party that Poland needs. Too bad they joined Hołownia's ephemeral movement.

a bunch of rationalizations to deal with the cognitive dissonance that they feel

Spot on, Maf. Look at Bobi's recent fairy tales about the amazing might of the Ukrainian army. Rationalising the Russian army's failure and perhaps already justifying the losses in the coming counter-offensive. If even intelligent people like him are susceptible to resorting to this psychological mechanism, then what defense is there for simple, state-TV-watching folks?

We did not expect them to resist. We expected them be in a state of shock and confusion.

Yes, I noticed you tend to underestimate your enemies.

24-48 hrs before the attack

Are you kidding me? Everyone knew what's going on for weeks before the "blitzkrieg" began. You can't attack suddenly and unexpectedly in the age of satellites, internet etc. The moment you start gathering troops, everyone and their grandmother knows what you're doing.

the rest of Europe

"The rest of Europe" is 500 million people (with slightly fewer percentage of drunks, HIV-positive, and degenerates than their Russian counterparts), incomparably stronger economy and armies that would wipe the floor with Russians in 3 weeks. Of course, we will never find out because even Ukrainian peasants armed with whatever handouts Europe and US could spare are efficiently stopping you.

However, let's just calmly assemble the strongest land army in the EU - just in case. :)

The Bobko's nation has other plans there

I know.

Ukraine was stronger at the beginning of the war than Poland will be in 2035.

What did they need our Grads and T-72s for then? And all the trains with ammunition for their post-Soviet artillery? Also, if they were so phantastically strong then why did you attack them with a hundred thousand or so of moderately equipped soldiers? And why, now that they are even more phantastically strong, you keep attacking them with T-54s and other ancient stuff? Questions, questions...

Meanwhile, let's calmly get those Abrams and HIMARS, just in case. :)

terms of number of tanks

The quality counts as well - we are getting brand new K2s and Abrams, as well as F-35s, HIMARS and Chunmu on top of other modern stuff. Ukraine is using mainly old post-Soviet junk.

Besides, Ukraine is at war, it's obvious their standing army is larger than Poland's 2035 peace time forces will be. Voluntary conscription has been introduced, however, as a first step to train reserve force in case of war.

I understand that Russia would prefer a weaker Poland and that's precisely why the army is being strengthened.
