Law / Termination of permament or contract work contract in Poland [35]

@Steven2020
The pandemic wasn't really good for business in Poland. That's a fact. People lost jobs.
If they were prejudiced against your nationality, you wouldn't have been employed there for ten years.
You have a three-month compensation and a new job.
As for why you were chosen among other employees you need to ask your boss. It may be connected with your experience, qualifications, performance or the company's needs and policy.

I'm afraid kontra is not used like that in Polish.
With Ela and śnieg it's getting even more confusing.
From what I have seen it's like a list of expenses (probably) understandable to the person who wrote it but not necessarilly to everyone.

Some abbreviations, 'mental shortcuts' etc.

Law / Termination of permament or contract work contract in Poland [35]

@Steven2020
So they need to be employed regardless of their performance or the economic situation of the company?
Yes, it's normal that sometimes people are made redundant and there are rules concerning it - so depending on the lenght of pernament employment, the employer needs to inform the employee in advance (two weeks to three months depending on how long you have been employed).

Zwolnienie dyscyplinarne is also possible in extreme cases.

Anyway doesn't your termination include the reason why you were made redundant?

I'm not an expert but it seems legit.
For a pernament contract of a person employed for over 3 years he informed you three months in advance and you get three months compensation -odprawa.

Consult a lawyer if you have any doubts.

They don't mean anything.
Kontra might have been used in another context.
It looks like a list of expenses (or something similar) concerning construction or reconstruction of something.
It's totally out of context. When was it written?

Life / Do you know these characters from Polish movies? [223]

@pawian
That scene is great and well known but - just like you - I don't really remember any titles but I remember I saw him in other films and he was always the same.

Or perhaps these were interviews : S

A sincere question now: is Koterski a good actor.

Looking at the pic I realised my ex colleague's son slightly looks like Gierek just some 40 years younger.
Not gonna tell them.

Life / Examples of popular Polish music? [781]

It's about how the oppressed might become the oppressors - peasants and labourers oppressed for years by the elites broke down the walls but then the movement became oppressive as well.

Simple as that.
As for any song or poem it's open for interpretations. Kaczmarski even stated that the song started its own life.

Another version - much sadder, Mury '87

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2223]

I remember the previous campaign when Komorowski was ridiculed for not knowing English as opposed to Duda who was said to know it.
Where did his knowledge of English go?
Trzaskowski definitely seems fluent in English.
Remember that video of a guy claiming to be American who asked him questions in English?
That was ridiculous. Who would have had such an idea anyway?

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [318]

@dolnoslask
If I remember well your family was a victim of NKWD, not UPA.
Also even if you are willing to bury the hatchet and think it's a good idea to have a Polish-Ukrainian state, there are some more 80 million Poles and Ukrainians who may think otherwise. I can't speak for Ukrainians but their independence is pretty recent after years of being part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian and Russian empires and the USSR.

Also there's the conflict in Donbas. If we become one country, it's godna be Polish borders being attacked by Russia. I remember when the conflict started, my aunt and uncle were thinking of evacuation to Germany :)

But no one is stopping you from spreading the idea - think of starting a political party, get followers in Poland and Ukraine and who knows?

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [318]

The idea of Poland uniting with Ukraine just doesn't make sense with Poles still remembering Volhynia and Ukrainians thinking of Polish oppressors.
Is Poland rich enough to support Ukraine economically?
Then we still have the war in Donbas. Ołeksij Nejiżpapa said quite recently that they are preparing for confrontation. Thousands have been killed already.

I really hope for Ukraine and Ukrainians that nothing happens but generally speaking Ukraine has more concerns than Polish sentiments for Lwów.

@Vlad1234
You're still not getting my point.
Poles greatly contributed to the development of Lwów whether you like it or not. Its history is related to the history of Poland.
But I don't think there would be a lot of volunteers among Poles to move there. Even among the descendants of those who were resettled from the city. Even among those who argue that Lwów is Polish. Mere nostalgia is too little to make such a decision.

As for Ukrainian migration to Poland, yeah right, as if Ukrainians are forced to move here because bloody oppressive Poles decided so. It was their decision.

Ukraine has more serious problems than the Polish nostalgia of the prewar Lwów.
You'd better worry about that because I kind of guess you'd rather live in Ukraine rather than Little Russia or whatever other name they may think of as this term is several hundred years old.

@Vlad1234
You are being quite selective.
First of all, since you were so eager to mention the Polish migration to the UK, why are you so silent about the Ukrainian migration to Poland -almost half a million working here legally -add their children and those who work illegally.

Secondly, the prewar population of Lwów wasn't Polish vs Ukrainians. You dare question the data pawian provided it was Poles who did the census. Well, Austrians did several censuses in the 19/20th century and unfortunately for your argument, the majority (religion/language) were Roman Catholic and Polish. Then Jews and Greek Catholic /Ruthenian were third.

Whether you like it or not, Poles have contributed greatly to the development of Lwów. Afaik, you can still see many Polish traces in Lwów. I would like to see them one day but I have no intention whatsoever to move there.

I also don't think it's Poland who are the greatest danger to the independence of Ukraine.

@Zlatko
Have you actually been to Poland?

I have been to several European countries and there are some picturesque places and rough looking places as well. That applies to both Central and Western Europe including places like London, Paris or Naples. I could name some more I guess.

As for Bulgaria, the old town in Plovdiv is great but I have seen also smaller places where ancient Roman monuments are mixed with beautiful historical buildings and post communist ones. I don't expect Bulgarians to get rid of them just because. Some are well preserved, some are not. What struck me most about Bulgaria was abandoned looking villages we drove through on the way to Sofia. I didn't get a chance to visit the capital -except for the airport but I guess I could find not so good looking parts like in any other European capitals I have seen. Or like in many other towns and cities.

And please don't post random google maps links.
I'm not going to deny there are some rough looking areas in Poland. But I have seen such in many other European towns.

I have an exactly the same feeling about the song.
But I need to check that Igo guy, I like his voice.

Daria Zawialow recorded a nice cover of Jeszcze w zielone gramy. - great lyrics by late Wojciech Młynarski.

youtu.be/_al4F7y95Jo

I like Maleńczuk, too. He did a cover of Jeszcze w zielone gramy and other songs by Młynarski.
Cicha woda is actually a cover, too.
Here's the original version. I don't know if you know it.

youtu.be/IwSwcSh1F2M

I know his original songs are great but his covers are fantastic.

@Zlatko
There's this festiwal muzyki country in Mrągowo but I don't think they ever made it to the charts.

Fix what you have in Bulgaria first before you give advice to Poland ;)

@Vlad1234
Since 'getting back' Lwów would probably equal another armed conflict I don't think it would make sense. What's the next step? Depopulating the city and populating it with Poles?

Nevertheless, whether you like it or not Polish people lived in Lwów and greatly contributed to its history.
These were the times we don't know when Poles, Ruthenians and Jews lived together.
