A wszystko w czasach pandemii.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [86]

I've been asking my parents to stay home for All Saints Day for some time now. As much as I am gonna miss this tradition, I believe it's necessary to stay home this year.

I will say my prayers at home this year. I hope to light a candle by our church this year.

Life / Is Poland good for expats with social phobia? [17]

Moving to a different country always includes getting to know its reality including the beaurocracy, social and cultural nuances etc so it always includes some sort of culture shock, even if a mild one.

And you need to meet new people who won't be always smiling. So if you have a social phobia you need to take care of it in a well known environment first with the support of people you can count on.

There's a difference between being shy and having a social phobia. In the latter case it'd be good to consult a professional.

Language / I really need to know the rest of this phrase - Jezu Kochanie...? [8]

@pipdaddy
It's probably 'Jezu kochany' which is like 'Sweet Jesus /Dear Lord'. I can't really make out the rest of the phrase you remember; it might be 's/konczcie' (finish -plural imperative) but I really can't think of the rest.

@Kukinda
Are you sure you are Polish?

Russian was the language of the partitioner. So was the Cyrillic. In fact only one of the partitioners.

Life / Examples of popular Polish music? [953]

I listened to some of her songs, like Królowa Dram but didn't come across these two. I really love Melodia. As for Szampan I just realised I had heard the chorus somewhere. I must have known it before.

I have heard of Goya but to be honest I don't think I could recall any of her tracks. These two are really nice.

Now not an original artist but an audition to the Voice of Poland and Nie żałuję, originally performed by Edyta Geppert.

And Jaka róża, taki ciern by Edyta. Geppert.

I like folk music but Maleńczuk wins this time :)

Here's a singer I learnt about last weekend only. I need to check her out. There's something different about her.

Life / Tell me about Northeastern Poland [29]

@jon357
It feels like Britain because it's at the seaside :)

I went to Podlasie only once, to Białowieża to be precise, and what struck me was that despite all the foreign tourists there, nobody really gives a damn about tourism :)

I really want to go again but the journey was a pain. I'd love to see the Tatar villages.

If you want to travel you can take a plane so it doesn't really matter whether you go from Wrocław or Białystok.

If you don't want to go by plane, then you need to take a ferry to Scandinavia so you'd have to drive from Białystok as well and though I don't know Podlasie very much I remember driving there was a pain.

Trójmiasto has a Prussian heritage -just like Wrocław.
Podlasie was in the Russian partition but more importantly it was always a melting pot of Polish, Ruthenian, Tatar and of course Jewish influences. Plus the Russian ones during the partitions. It still has a relatively big Christian Orthodox community and even some Polish Muslims.

Also I don't think Podlasie is the most popular destination for wealthy people who would be interested only in luxurious goods.

Brudnicki might have also originated from a place name like Brudnica, Brudno or Brudnia.

Genealogy / Funny Polish surnames [63]

How about Ciołek? I met someone called that years ago.
Years later I found out there was a coat of arms of Ciołek.

@jon357
Why did his parents do this to him? :)

And there's this actress who plays the wójt's wife in Ranczo. She's known as Arlak but I heard it was shortened from Zmarlak.

@OdrowazP
If you know where and when your ancestors in Poland were born you can get their birth records. After all, they must have got the information on ancestry from somewhere.

Genealogy / What it means to be Odrowąż? [14]

@mafketis
Autocorrection. My phone thinks it knows better.

@OdrowazP
Try to do it on your own first.
Check your relatives' death certificates, immigration records etc. A lot of documents are available on familysearch. It'd be best to find their date and place of birth and religion. Parents' names would be helpful too. When you find enough info in the States, you can start looking in Poland. Metrical records should name the social status so you will find out if you come from the nobility.

What religion did they observe and where were they born?
Some records are available online, some are only in the state archives or civil register office.

Genealogy / Want to find a person [755]

@gerca
Try contacting the state archives in Wrocław.
I see no Jewish records in the search engine at szukajwarchiwach.pl. The synagogue was burned by Germans during the war. Perhaps people at the archives will show you in the right direction.

The Jewish population of the town was considerably small. And if you just guess he was Jewish, they may also check the RC records.

Life / Popular brands/gifts for girls age 8/9 [10]

There have been black barbies here for ages. Just check allegro.
As for dolls with African features, they have been here since the PRL.

As for London souvenirs, a nice bag with the British flag would be ok.

Ask her family what she likes: games, fluffy toys, creative sets or just a souvenir from London for a girl.
Even if you decide to buy clothes, you need to talk to them about the size unless you're thinking of accessories.

Real Estate / Places I can stay in Krakow and expenses I need to shell [4]

Here are some offers of flats near Kapelanka.
You need to add the administration rent, electricity, the internet and phone provider - roughly speaking 700+ PLN - to the price.
As for groceries, if you shop at supermarkets the prices are comparable all over Poland.

Life / Understanding Polish Mailing Addresses [21]

00-910 is the postcode

The second line should be like:
ul. (Name of the street) 18 m.17

Ul=ulica -street

What seems to be missing is the name of the street. 18 is probably the house number and 17 is the flat number.
