News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1538]

If a promise from America to Poland depends on psychotic, narcissistic Israel's say-so then America is no friend to Poland at all.

The problem is that Poland is fast running out of friends if PiS continues with its' current course. That would be fine if Poland was an island like the UK, but since PiS openly considers its' neighbour Russia as a threat, one has to question the wisdom of alienating its' allies like this.

@Ironside

some 'red-necks' and Trump should show them that America won't do any dirty job for Israel for some shekels

Are we talking about the same government that showed unwavering support for Israel Jerusalem-question? And you think that the same government would not side with Israel over this too?

News / Israel opposing potential new Polish law to criminalise term 'Polish death camps' [1538]

Bravo PiS for doing what is right and putting Poland's interests first!

I do not care for the law itself, nor do I care if it offends Israel or others per se. But annoying Israel seems to be a bad idea when the American president (whom Poland desperately wants as an ally) seems to back Israel in everything they do. Creating a possible conflict with the USA can hardly be in Poland's interests. Especially not after they have already been bumping heads with its' European allies.

If you are worried about Russia, you'd better not start offending the countries that could offer you support. That is just common sense.

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

@dolnoslask

when Poland starts flooding tens of thousands of hectares to create the necessary dams , whole villages / valleys under water predominantly in the national parks

It is not like coal-mining does not destroy the environment either. That being said, I believe Poland should invest more in renewable energy. Not only because nuclear energy has a lot of risks, but also because nuclear energy can produce a lot of long-term costs, particulary regarding the safe storage of nuclear waste.

To rely on nuclear energy when a lot of countries have started to reduce nuclear energy as an energy source seems questionable to me. It makes sense for countries like France to rely on nuclear energy long-term because they a) earn money by building nuclear plants in foreign countries and b) have strategic interest in getting ressources for their nuclear weapon programs. Poland on the other hand would have to pay for each plant build in Poland, would have to import nuclear material and would have to pay for its' safe-keeping.

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

4.6% GDP growth - that's insanely high for a European country.

It would be insanely high for a Western European country, it is still good for an Eastern European country.

However it is concerning that despite its' high growth rate, Poland is still having a relatively high budget deficite. Given Poland's unfavourable demographic outlook, it might not be the best idea to produce more and more debts while the economy is still expanding.

News / Beata Szydło - the best Polish politician, world's politicians could learn from her [80]

TERROR ATTACK ON THE GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET never happened either right? .

All of those attacks (in addition to others) have claimed the lifes of less than 20 people. In other words, islamic terrorism has claimed the lives of perhaps 1 German per year since 9/11. Cows have killed more Germans during this time than terrorists. Yet nobody claims that Germany is under danger from cows.

Funny how the million migrants Poland took in aren't raping women en masse.

Neither are the genuine refugees like the Syrians. If you want, you could easily portray Polish people as criminals too, particulary large Polish families are known to commit a large range of crimes in Germany.

ecause the million we took in

Do not confuse refugees with migrants.

@Dirk diggler

. However, a significant percentage reject the values of European society such as equality with women, separation of church and state, ability to buy/sell alcohol,

Those people lived under such systems for all of their life, so naturally they will not change their views immediately after crossing the borders. Not so long ago, Europe was not a particulary democratic of human-rights adhering continent either. Many older East Germans are still holding on to antidemocratic views, not to mention those who came from Eastern Europe as descendents from German expatriats. Given time, they or at least their children will change their views.

Now if you did the same with France, Germany, etc you'd run out of fingers and toes

You are still claiming that terrorism is a big problem in Germany even after I explained to you in detail that this is not true?

@Ironside

A position of hostility and imperialism, they could try for a change to negotiate with Poland some kind of agreement.

About what? It is Poland who is breaking agreements that it pledged to adhere to when it joined the EU. Besides, there is no room to compromise over essential values of the EU like the rule of law and judicary independence.

This is of course wrong, just like the rest of your post.

But I beg to differ Poland is no different to the UK apart from 61 bn trade to the us

The UK has twice the population size, its' trade is four times as high as Poland, and unlike Poland its' biggest single trading partner is not an EU country but the USA, yet you think they are comparable? And this is disregarding Poland's status as EU fund recipient, the number of Polish citizen abroad, and its' vulnerable geopolitical position.

@G (undercover)

And what Germany would be without the Marshall plan, half million foreign soldiers defending them from the commies and most of Europe where they can sell their goods non-taxed

Which is why nobody in German (even the AfD) questions Germany's EU membership. And as the polls indicate, most Polish people appreciate it as well.

The whole "either you are in EU or will become the second North Korea" stuff is ridiculous.

Nobody said anything about North Korea, that is just your exaggeration. Without the EU, Poland would be left significantly poorer over time, with possibly a lot of returnees who would not be very pleased of having to return to Poland, and it would be vulnerable to Russian influence. None of this is desireable for Poland.

@dolnoslask

Wait and see Britain post brexit then u might see the future of poland, before that you are only making an assumption.

Brexit is at best an indication for what could await Poland. The UK enjoys still several advantages that Poland doesnt have. The UK is a signficantly larger economy with a larger population, it is a net payer (although the British rabate does make the actual amount of money paid to Bruessels smaller). And perhaps most importantly, the ratio of EU citizens working in the UK versus British people working in other EU countries is in the UK's favour. Imagine how weak Poland's hand would be if it had to secure the rights of its' citizen in other EU countries.

And that leaves out security considerations, the UK does not deem Russia to be an existential threat, it has no border with it and the UK owns nuclear weapons.

This article will answer most of your questions regarding Merkel:

Putin and Merkel: A Rivalry of History, Distrust and Power

nytimes.com/2017/03/12/world/europe/vladimir-putin-angela-merkel-russia-germany.html

now the powerhouse of Europe and admired by so many here on the forum and Europe wide.

Indeed, interesting how countries and people can change over generations. Kind of gives someone hope for the future, doesn't it?

@Ironside

ou are surely kidding here

Why should I? Without Germany, the Euro would have broken up, and Germany is paying the most for the upkeep of the EU.

I just wonder what they are trying to achieve by attacking Poland

Nobody is attacking Poland, if anything Poland is currently attacking itself by its' irresponsible government. The fact that they are willing to endanger Poland's long-term interest in being alligned to Europe is telling.

Somehow no one is bringing it up as a sign that Markel and Germany are unfit to lead EU, or to question their commitment to the EU

Why should anyone bring up this fact when Merkel has been instrumental in coordinating the European response to Russia's agression? She was always critical of Putin, and she is the only Western politician he actually respects for her strength. No doubt future historians will look at the recent tension between the EU and Russia as a great rivalvry between Putin and Merkel.

If not for her, the EU probably would not have shown any coherent reaction. And why should people doubt the commitment of Germany to the EU, when it is the one country holding the EU together?

Off-Topic / Is anyone in Poland planning a trip in Croatia? [26]

If you want any credibility here, you'd better stop refering to Croatia as "Nazi-Regime". I don't use the term for Serbia, and their actions are certainly more deserving of the title.

violating Yugoslavian constitution

Even if that was true, the Croats had no reason to feel any attachment to Yugoslavia or its' constitution. Yugoslavia was an artifical construct that was based upon the supression of non-Serbs and only worked as long as Tito survived.

ew days ago, this was final verdict and conclusion of court in Hague. I was shocked that they were able for that final act of truth.

Of course, the Serbian leadership was also (or would have been in the case of Milosovic) been convicted for the same reasons. With the added problem that Serbs are responsible for the worst atrocities (Srebrenica) and later continued to commit crimes e.g. with Kosovo.

Both sides proved the savage and backward nature of the Balkans, but at least Croatia managed to turn around and their actions can be partly excused as the inevitable consequences of war.

Off-Topic / Is anyone in Poland planning a trip in Croatia? [26]

In fairness, it's not quite true. Croats were guilty of crimes too, especially in Bosnia, but there were also war crimes committed before and during Operation Storm.

Yes, they commited crimes too, but the worst one were not done by them, and most importantly, they had the right and history on their side. The break-up of Yugoslavia was inevitable, and what Belgrade did was wrong on every level. I am not painting Croatia and Co. as saints, but their motivation was understandable and my post was a response to the grotesque lies written by Crow.

Nobody would deny that the Allies did their fair share of atrocities, yet nobody would be taken seriously if he claimed that the Allies were the evil ones and the Axis power acted in legitimate self-defence to protect the world against Communis,/Jews (as e.g. Nazi-Germany did).

I hope you do not expect anyone to read your ramblings. Just clarify, Slovenia's relations with Germany are very close, and Germany is not involved in the dispute between Slovenia and Croatia.

Also you may stop trying to paint Croatia and others as the evil. Everybody outside Serbia knows that Serbia was the villain in this conflict, and eventually Serbians will acknowledge this as well.

And how is Croatia's foreign policy related to the question in the first post. I spend my holidays twice in Croatia (during the last 5 years, and I never had any trouble there, the people were very kind.

Btw the reason why Slovenia probably "mistrusts" Croatia is because of a territory dispute, not because of its foreign alliance. Because Slovenia has been a staunch ally of Berlin during the last years, particulary during the Euro crisis.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

Yes exactly, that is what I have been saying and no-one should have the right to play God.

That analogy would only work if people would adhere to it completely, which means that no one would interfere with the fate of those children at all. Yet children born with physical effects are not simply left to die, but thanks to modern medicine live a lot longer than if they'd receive no care. However this can also lead to a prolonging of suffering and children, who might not even have survived birth are now left to suffer perhaps for years or possibly decades.

If a system that can afford to pay 100 of 1000 prisoners not to mention other groups it can hardly be broken by very few children that would be born with a need of life long support.

Prisoners are usally relatively cheap, since they live in large facilities that are often cost-effective and require not much work from individual workers. That is why it is e.g. cheaper in the USA to send someone to life in prison than to execute him, because the bureaucratic and legal process for the death penalty is way more expensive. And nevermind that there is no alternative to having prisons since you can't execute everyone who breaks the law (and even then you would need a prison to house them).

The same counts for the care of disabled children. Intensive care for a child (e.g. for those who need machines et. al to life) costs easily for than sending someone to prison for decades. And those who live longer and require not so much medical help, the expenses are still significant. E.g. if they go to a special school, they'll need trained personal, and they might not be able to earn their money for their entire life. So in short, another myth busted.

@Atch

, that child when it becomes an adult, stroking its head and wiping the saliva from its face.

That is precisely the problem. People might have some patience with a mentally disabled person, e.g. when he does something stupid in public, but once he becomes an adult that changes- The disabled child I knew never understood the concept of "paying" for something, so whenever he was hungry he went to a supermarket, took something and left. As long as he was a child, the supermarket had patience with him and simply sent the bill to his parents. But once he was above a certain age, they started calling the police and eventually banned him from entering the supermarket, something he did not understand either. The person in question was otherwise very kind and nother caused others trouble, but this was a real problem, because we lived in a small village with not much options.His parents eventually bribed the owner to still let him in, because otherwise he would not be able to go on a small walk unsupervised, but this would not be an option for family with small income.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

Raising children is usually an economic burden since the times when those children provided for their parents in old age are usually over in Europe (there are of course children who provide for their parents in old age, but this is not obligatory and depends heavily on choices the parents have no control over, e.g. how many children their child get themself).

Raising mentally or physically impaired children can be very taxing, physically, mentally and economically. Parents will devote their money and time possibly for the end of their lives for their child. It seems only fair that if the government would decide to ban abortions, it would make sure that those parents get as much help as possible.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

Not because they were genuine pacifists.

They were not pacifist, but most Americans wanted to stay out of what they considered an European affair. No country had declared war on the USA, no American terrority was attacked, so this line of thinking had merit. The influence of the German-Americans was neglible, and had declined since WWI (and even then it was not great enough to keep the USA out of WWI).

No possible pleading Churchill could have done would have swayed the American public.

@Dirk diggler

HAHHAHAH GERMANY HAS NO TERRORISM PROBLEMS?!

No, Germany does not have a terrorism problem, at least not a significant one. Less than 18 Germans have been killed in Islamic terorist attacks since 2001, which means less than one German per year. So terrorism is under control , only fools would exaggerate the threat here. There have been car crashes that killed more people in 2017 alone.

businessinsider.de/ap-german-police-say-31-injured-when-bus-burns-after-crash-2017-7?r=US&IR=T

1000 women groped in Cologne never happened,

That was not a terrorist attack. Nor is it relevant any longer, since measures have been taken that will prevent such incidents in the future (mostly by putting restrictions on North African migrants).

Politically stable only in the sense that AfD is taking more and more seats from the lefties and cuckservatives.

We shall see, the AfD lost votes in the last regional election in Lower Saxony in October 2017 and they are still a small minority. Unlike the USA, the far-right is stil far away from the government.

Merkel can't even form a coalition and 50% of Germans want her out.

And 50% want her to stay, which is more than the guy in the White House currently has. Forming a government can take time, but there will be a new one eventually, with or without Merkel, but certainly without the AfD. The heavily federalized nature of Germany means that the absence of a new government is hardly felt anyway so far.

The various van, truck, ak-47 assaults, explosions, etc. never occurred.

There has been no ak-47 incident in Germany, and as pointed out above, all of those incidents claimed the life of only a few Germans. Terrorism was a bigger problem in the 70s and 80s than it is now, and the biggest favour you can do to the terrorists is exaggerating the threat, just like the USA did after 9/11.

So in short, Germany is politically stable, and the refugee crisis is far from the dominating subject it was one year ago, since the number of arrivals have decreased and measures have been taken to prevent further incidents. I know that Breitbart and other media love to paint the picture of Germany in disarray, but this is simply ludicrous.

Germany is currently one of the most prosperous nations in the world, with a growing econmy and historical low unemployment and with overall less votes for right-wing parties than in basically the entire Western world. You view of Germany is based on lies and exaggerations, please stop commenting on things you have obviously no idea of.

Furthermore your ideas about British help for Poland are ludicrous. Not even modern planes could do that even if they had been allowed safe passage from Germany to Poland (so this is no option for a potential conflict with Russia in the future), let alone back then. Even today, most logistics for a conflict of this size would have to be sent by train of cars, there is no way the UK could have made a meaningful contribution to Poland this way.

Britain didnt have its soldiers, pilots, marines etc on polish land fighting against the nazis.

Not that this was in any way realistic, how should those soldiers entered Poland in the first place after the war broke out?

Now their political and social stability is under grave threat due to terrorism and the migrant crisis

You might be confusing the USA with Germany here. Germany is politically stable, as well as socially. And terrorism is not a problem here either, in the great scale of things. There have been mass shootings in the USA that killed several times the number of people who died due to terrorism in Germany.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

The question that interests me most is whether the Polish governments intents to help those parents who (arrcording to the proposal) would be obliged to raise a (mentally or physically) heavily disabled child?

Because raising a such a child is an immense burden, no reason to sugarcoat it. Not to mention that - depending on the condition of the person in question - it might be dependable on outside assistance for the rest of its' life.

There used to live a mentally disabled person a few streets away from my house, who was cared for by his already old parents. He was a nice, cheerful person, and when I talked with his parents a few times it became clear that they loved him very much. But he could be very taxing, and it probably only worked so well because his parents were relatively wealthy. A single mother who would have to work would be hopelessly overstrained with this. If the Polish governments intents to go through with this proposal, they better make sure that there are enough places in schools for those children, and that the parents received appropiate assistance.

No, he didn't. To my knowledge, the project is still going forward. I have found no article stating that this project is cancelled.

Well, in reality Merkel has much closer ties than Trump.

There is no greater adversary to Putin in the Western world than Merkel. She used to be sceptical of him even in the early 2000s when a lot of people still had false expectations of Russia and Putin. They never got along, and all of their personal meetings were frosty at best.

Nah.. could be beneficial in the long run.

Yes, very benefical. Being diplomatically isolated between the EU and Russia, losing a lot of money and the economic damage of leaving the Common market. Sounds very attractive to me.
