News / US Military: The Army of Poland is crap. [124]

@mafketis: In modern warfare is nothing like a " victory " in modern warfare all is about pulling the balance of power more in to your favour... And at this..the U.S is pretty good !

News / US Military: The Army of Poland is crap. [124]

Hi.

A comparison between Polish forces and U.S forces is ridiculous. U.S forces are the most modern military in the world who spend the largest amount of money on military equipment & technology.

Polish army evolved quite nice the last 30 years, but they still wont invest more in to military, like Brits and the French do.

UK, Ireland / Working in London after an university - paperwork, registration in UK? [6]

@Andreas123

Bank took me a couple of months. So more than a day. They needed tons of proof of residence, and it took quite a while until they could create me a PROPER bank account.

National Insurance number. As far as I know you need your ID, maybe a copy of your birth certificate and some residence details in form of a bill like rent or waterbill or something like this.

It was about 3 years ago, and back then my wife helped me a lot, so I can't remember everything I needed. But if you want to make sure 100%, you could try to contact the British government and ask for what you need. I recommend calling them, since they wont send you more than some auto-mail with some auto-standard text.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

@Ktos

I also can't use the term " love ". I love my wife, I love my parents. But how can I love a country? A country is a land, a government and a massive amount of people, hard to love something you hardly know. Even Poles can't know all other Poles and everyone in the government.

The title should be " Why are you in to Polish culture " or " Why do you like Poland " .

If I would have to use " Love " in connection with a country, I would say I love the UK, because this is the country I live in, I buy my food in, I breath the air in, I am safe in. Would be weird to " LOVE " a place I don't even live in.

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

I personally think that people who DISLIKE an entire nation ( which of course also includes the people living there ), are people who have not much of an education.

I mean, it's always the same people who dislike entire nations based on historical events. People who build their opinion on cliches and bad historical events. Why would I dislike Germans for what they have done in ww2 ? I dislike Germans who actually have done bad stuff in ww2, like old SS veterans, but not actual Germans who haven't even taken part in WW2. The same goes for Russia/Soviet Union.

So I would say, Poles don't dislike Germany or Russia at all, only uneducated Poles who feel like they have to stick on events that happened 71 years ( counted from the end of ww2 ) ago.

Most people who actually fought and suffered in ww2, are not even alive anymore. WW2 survivors are dead because of their age, or are this old that they can't even remember their own name anymore.

Language / Is Polish an easy language to learn and is there a way of learning it easily? [105]

@weaverwarrior12

Hi.

I don't think Polish is easy, but no language is " easy ". It's only as easy as you make it.
If you have some serious motivations to learn Polish, you will do " easy " learning it. To learn it for your ancestors is a good reason, and it will motivate you.

But don't expect to be fluent in a years time. It might take much longer than expected, especially when you haven't learnt any other language before up to a fluent-base.

But everyone learns in a different speed & way.

Just go for it

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

I don't think it is true.

I think only uneducated Brits. don't like Poles. Because educated Brits. know that not all Poles are the same.

I've met Poles that were idiots, and I've met Poles that were totally fine and very polite and respectful people.

It's a thing you can't generalize, and people who hate Poles, usually build their opinion on cliches.

UK, Ireland / Living in England - the reality. I am now returning to Poland. [30]

Hi Zuzanna.

I am an " Einwanderer " from Germany. I also experienced a hard time getting a job at the beginning, probably because I did not have much job experience in the first place, and was a bit picky about certain jobs. But I've never felt treated " unfair " by the English folks over here. The government was always extremely helpful and polite, certain job search agencies also were quite helpful. The only negative experiences I experienced in my first job in a restaurants-kitchen which only used people for a couple of months to get some cheap workers in and a German factory which mostly employed Poles ( which by the way treated me like ****, not the English people, the Poles ). But besides from that, I've not experienced any trouble with the Government or laws in the UK.

Yes, it is a different country, and it might not be as much of a " paradise " as people especially from eastern-european countries imagine it as, but it definitely is a country which offers you many opportunities as long as you are willing to work hard for it and pay the price. As every capitalist country I guess !

I am here since about 3 years by now, I am self-employed but mostly work with Austrian,German and American customers based in Austria,Germany or the U.S.

However, maybe I am treated differently because my wife is British? Or because I am German? Or just because I came to the UK having in mind to 100% integrate in to this society? I don't know. But it finally worked out. So far, the only thing that annoys me, is that I am not a British citizen yet, and that the weather is not great :-)

UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

@ryouga

I think what you are encountering there are simply " chavs ". Nothing I would refer to a nationality or heritage.

All you can do is, to report it to the Police if it seriously annoys you, or to just try to involve with them, maybe you find some new friends?

PS: Of course you don't HAVE TO learn the languages of people who migrate to your country, but it wouldn't hurt to learn Polish. I mean, there are many Poles in the UK, and it is an interesting language and an interesting country which I had some great holidays in.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

@LoneStranger

Well, there are quite some reasons! To me it evolved slowly.

At the age of 14/15 I found out that my great-grandfather ( I've never met ) was Polish. So I started to build up an interest in Polish culture and language. About 3 years ago, I moved to the UK and noticed that Poland has quite some similarities to Germany, especially when it comes to food. So I was even more interested in Poland. Now I started to learn Polish language, cook Polish food and try to meet Polish people.

You have to know that I always was interested in slavic countries like Russia, my favour for Poland came quite late, but is one of the most serious interests I have in a country besides the UK I live in.

Hello Andreas.

I am a foreigner in the Uk myself, when I moved to the UK 3 years ago. I remember me just flying to the UK & living with my British wife. I remember that I needed a National Insurance number and a British bank account to be able to work. I guess to get those two things, you need a residence in Britain first, which is hard to get without exactly these two things you need anyway. The best thing is, to live with a friend first & just set it as your British location/residence, so you are able to apply for most of the things.

But as far as I am aware, you are a EU citizen, so you only need a National Insurance number and a British bank account.

Language / Polish Language Exchange Thread [133]

Merged: Hello everyone.

Hello everyone / Dzień dobry!

My name is Franz and I am a German living in the UK. I am 23 y.o and I live here since about 3 years. I recently started to learn the Polish language ( I am using memrise,youtube and sometimes write and speak to Polish people, online ). I am a total beginner, so I wont be able to say more than dzień dobry, witam and how are you in Polish ( for now ). The reason I learn Polish for is because I find the country interesting, like the language, the food and because my great-grandfather was from Poland ( I've never met him though, it just raised interest ).

However, I am here to find some Polish friends in the UK and maybe even in Poland. Would be nice to talk ( write first ) to someone who's mother tongue is Polish.

Please note that I'm married and not looking for any relationship.

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

I've never met any Polish women being disrespectful towards me! I am not a native English, but you wont realize where I am from until you talk to me for a while, even then it might be hard to impossible to identify me as a German for most foreigners.

I've met plenty of disrespectful male poles, but never any disrespectful female poles. Maybe because I am male ?

Language / Extremely Hard - Polish the hardest language to learn [142]

Pszczoła looks impossible to say...when you know nothing about Polish pronunciation.

I am a native German speaker, and I don't feel like Polish words are hard to pronounce. Yes, they might take some " repeats " here and there, but in general it doesn't make the entire language harder to me, just because some difficult sounding words. If you take your time to read them, you can easily pronounce them.
