Study / Is doing study courses by correspondence popular among Polish people? [5]

consumer education, institutional management, interior design, home furnishing, cleaning, handicrafts, sewing, clothing and textiles, commercial cooking, cooking, nutrition, food preservation, hygiene, child development, managing money, and family relationships

All of these in just single course? I doubt you can find it in Krakow, Warsaw or any other city in Poland.
But divide it all into separate issues - it's a different story. Then you would probably find some eg. interior design courses, sewing, nutrition, child development schools, etc.

And if in one place for everything - on the internet only, sitting in front of the monitor.

Genealogy / Adopted in 1979 by Michael and Arcadia McGuire, my Polish name was Justyna or Anna [2]

If you are sure about £ęczyca, maybe try to contact the hospital where you might be born.
Check the website: zozleczyca.pl
It would be extremely hard to find someone just by a name - yet you're not sure if your Polish name was Justyna or Anna (maybe both?)

But write an email, it's possible that someone give you some clue, further search direction.
I hope you'll reach someone from your Polish family.

Genealogy / Finding Sielce tobacco factory 1850s (Poland) [4]

I dug deeper and found more detailed story. I won't quote here much more, the article is quite long.
Regarding the names of workers, here is one mentioned - Franke:

Among female workers eg Franke family has dozens of members. Ancestor of the family is still brisk old granny which while working in the factory from thirty-two years, as one can judge from her face, even will lead yet her great-grandchildren to the factory

top25snuff.com/forum/79-historie-firm/107-warszawski-union.html

The other two mentioned names: Kołodziejski and Filipowski - they didn't work in the same factory, but led a company of same name, a 12 years after the closure of native business.

And yet below the picture of the building.

Genealogy / Finding Sielce tobacco factory 1850s (Poland) [4]

Quote from a book: "Mokotów poprzez wieki" by Tadeusz Władysław Świątek -2006 (site 36):

Slightly shorter life had active in Sielce, in years 1839-1861 snuff factory, founded by financier and industrialist and shareholder of hiring tobacco monopoly - Leopold Kronenberg (1812-1878), who owned at that time manor and palace in Sielce. Emil Hignet (1817-1887), an official Censorship Committee, ran along with his brother Julian, the country's first Department of Silkworm Breeding and silk spinning factory - all placed on a lot separated from the manor, the center which occupied "Bogucin" villa. Existing nearby horticultural farm Bardet brothers (of French origin) supplied them with mulberry bushes.

Sielce Palace

Sielce Palace

I've found another source

Cigars from Sielce

As many as half thousand workers employed founded in the mid-nineteenth century Snuff Factory in Sielce. It was the first large industrial plant built on the Warsaw suburb. He was only a few dozen meters from the present headquarters of "Gazeta Wyborcza". He stood on the north (odd) side of the present-day Chelmska bearing then the name Książęca road - roughly where today's Lwicka street outlet is. The factory belonged to Leopold Kronenberg. Buildings went around a large, square courtyard, on which smaller buildings had place.

At the cigars curling mainly women and additionally young boys were hired. Working conditions were harsh. Factory premises were so tight that the workers were forced to sit for a few hours next to ladle of the toxic fumes. Women complained of persistent headaches, dizziness and nausea. In 1860 Kronenberg, who managed to get rid of quite cumbersome shareholders, moved the factory to a new, specially designed buildings at Marszałkowska street.

Study / Management or Computer Science Engineering in Poland - your experience and suggestions [3]

I can tell you, there is not much employment prospects after management studies, go for computer science, hands-down choice for me. Although the competition is much higher in IT, I don't see much perspectives when finishing management, unless you have a predisposition to become a bank president ;)

and what basically subjects and modules are offered.

Genealogy / Looking for Maria Kuczera from Poland, also looking for her family. [3]

she were born in Polana in 1920

You meant Polana - a town, or maybe it was a typo and it should be Poland? Anyway, place of birth, residence would be helpful to know for further research. As you mentioned, the family was big and probably some of it is still located in same or nearby area. The map of Polish surnames however shows that here are almost 4.000 people registered with this name. They are spreaded all over whole country but most is placed in Silesia area.

Travel / Anyone know about the larger Flea Markets in Poland? [8]

Below is a decent list of major flea markets in Poland:
ciekawnik.pl/zakupy-i-pieniadze/993-najwieksze-gieldy-staroci-w-polsce

Here's another site with Polish biggest Antique Fairs:
urzadzamy.pl/aranzacja-wnetrz/wystroj-wnetrz/targi-antykow-sprawdz-najwieksze-gieldy-i-targi-staroci-w-polsce,168_11393.html

One of the greatest flea market is in Gdansk during "Jarmark Dominikanski" (St. Dominic's Fair) - I'm very surprised that there's no reference about it in above articles. It's 3-week event and takes place every summer.

Gdansk Dominican Fair is the largest and most popular trading open-air event in Poland.

Long-standing tradition and a huge amount of attractions make it the largest event of its kind in Poland and one of the few largest in Europe. In 2013 the Fair was visited by 6.2 million people!

The main attractions of Dominican Fair is a trade offer over 1,000 stands with old artifacts, antiques, art products, handicrafts and regional cultural, artistic events and concerts.

Study / English elementary schools and education in Tricity, Poland [7]

Yes, the private English schools are still very expensive everywhere in Poland.
If it isn't a option, you may bring a person who is fluent at English and who may give some individual lessons - lot of people, students are looking for additional income, give an ad on gumtree.pl for example.

In addition to the above, there are also different sources of daily English - as you mentioned - meetings with other native speakers are invaluable. And at home - books, internet, educational computer games, even English TV should be very helpful.

Law / How can I find out if my parents still hold their Polish Citizenship? [4]

Hi Looker, all joined now ;)

Welcome :)

To be sure about your father's Polish citizenship the application must be filled and submitted to the embassy. It is also crucial for your efforts to obtain Polish citizenship.

The form is very detailed, but the more meaningful informations will be noted the better for the whole case. Another issue that it must be filled in Polish.

Do you think its unwise to write that these details about my father are unknown on my application (in the father's memoir part)?

Everything you put on this document must be true, if you are not certain about something it may be better just write unknown with (if possible) a short note.

Good luck!

Law / How can I find out if my parents still hold their Polish Citizenship? [4]

Hello Monski, why not join us?

Polish citizenship can be confirmed as follows - you must submit appropriate application to Polish Consulate. The application can be downloaded here:
msw.gov.pl/download/1/15323/094133_KW_321019_DOIR_plik4.pdf

In addition, documents proving the data and information contained in the application should be attached - for example long form Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Certificate of current Citizenship - but for the details ask the embassy, different countries - slightly different procedures.

I hope this helped.

Australia / Dual citizenship (Polish person Australian born) [10]

The same question regarding Australia - some states require renunciation of previous citizenship, how about it then?

In Poland at the time the following reasons decided about loss of Polish citizenship:

A Polish citizen who is abroad, may be deprived of Polish citizenship if:

- violated the duty of loyalty to Polish People's Republic,
- acted to the detriment of the interests of Polish People's Republic,
- illegally left the Polish People's Republic after 9 May 1945.,
- refused to return to the call of Polish national authority,
- failing to comply with military duty, as required by Polish law,
- was sentenced abroad for an offense which is also a common crime under Polish law or is a recidivist.

Real Estate / Are Mortgage brokers licenced in Poland? Can anyone become an real estate agent? [18]

If I like to work as a Property Manager for Private Property owners (Apartments or single houses) do I need to have a Real Estate License in Poland?

The answer is no and yes.

No because there has been deregulation of the profession of broker and real estate manager (from 2014). Now people do not need to have a license and appropriate education to perform this profession.

Yes because most of employers in real estate offices still require certification. So without it your chances for a better job are lower.

Life / Thoughts on "Ida" (Polish movie) [30]

The movie is presenting the story of a young Jewish girl and her aunt - a fierce communists, against the realities of post-war Polish - the sixties. It takes only 80 min., but it's enough to finish all plots. The movie has collected many awards in Poland and abroad - deservedly so, I think. Beautiful pictures and acting.

Law / My grandfather left Poland after WWII and emigrated. Question About Polish Citizenship [10]

A person of Polish descent, within the meaning of Act, is a person who declares Polish nationality and fulfills all the following conditions:

1. at least one of his/her parents or grandparents or two great grandparents were of Polish nationality,
2. he/she demonstrates its relationship with Poland, in particular by cultivating Polish language, traditions and customs

Yes, Polish descent, not Polish citizen - you can't get citizenship through your grandparent, it would be possible only if one of your parents have/had Polish citizenship.

But still you may apply for permanent residency in Poland.

The person whose Polish origin has been confirmed in accordance with statute may settle on Polish territory permanently.
