USA, Canada / Polish girlfriend visiting America, what to say at the border? [9]

Unfortunately they may. I hate this. They can ask her where would she stay at the time - what will be her answer? And to whom? Main purpose of the trip? And question why so frequently?

She should stay calm and cool. Everything will be fine, but the questioning is killing sometimes.
Are we suspicious in advance because we're from Poland??

Life / External usb hard drive Cyfrowy Polsat [6]

Now I see that you need the 'genuine' hdd compatible with the hd5000 - it's DTU 320 - go to the nearest Cyfrowy Polsat distributor (if you're in Poland) and ask for it. Addresses:

cyfrowypolsat.pl/oferta/telewizja-cyfrowa/gdzie-kupic.cp
Price - about 210PLN

It's not easy to get such disk online unfortunately.
It appears on allegro sometimes. Recently this one:
allegro.pl/dysk-twardy-dtu-320-cyfrowy-polsat-i4702503490.html
Unluckily unavailable already.

Life / External usb hard drive Cyfrowy Polsat [6]

What about NTFS? And maybe the disk isn't getting enough power from the receiver? If it's larger than 500GB it may be the problem. Have you tried with regular flash drive stick?

Genealogy / Burial records for Catholic cemetery in Dobrodzien and Tarnowskie Gory? [3]

I got such experience once. I went to the church, spoke with a priest, and he located the grave which I was looking for (although not that old).

So try the same, contact churches in Dobrodzien and in Tarnowskie gory, and ask for the help.

Dobrodzien:
parafia-dobrodzien.pl
parafiadobrodzien.eopolszczyzna.pl

Tarnowskie Gory:
piotripawel.org - the biggest and the oldest church in the city.

Life / Questions about Polish names Pola, Gracja, and Grażyna [29]

1. Of course - Pola name is getting more and more popular in Poland now pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pola

2.

Gracjanka, Gracjanna, Gracjusia, Gracjuś, Gracusia, Gracuszanna, Gracuś, Grasielita, Grasjas, Grażka, Grejs

zdrobnienia.pl/gracja.htm
I don't like the first two examples provided on this site - Gracek, Gracjan sounds like a male name. I would add yet one from myself - Gracjunia.

3. I think that more direct equivalent of name Grace is Gracja, and indirect - Grażyna. Grażyna and Gracja are separate names.

Law / Penalty points on driving licences in Poland [26]

You'll still get away with this - the new law is not implemented yet and the points won't be transferred. But it will be changed soon.

Language / Usage of Polish Instrumental Case? [22]

To jest ładna kobieta

This form is ok.

To jest ładną kobietą

If changing to "Ona jest ładną kobietą" (ona=she) - it would be correct to, and I'd choose this form.

Law / I am citizen of EU. What happens when i register in Poland? [4]

Yes, I didn't mention that it's the ONLY way to get pesel. It's one of possibilities - the OP was going to work in Poland, and it could have apply to his case.

Another thing:

If you apply for a permanent or temporary residence registration for at least three months, Social Security number (PESEL) will be automatically assigned to you within approximately 10 days from the date of check-in.

migrant.poznan.pl/en/law-regulation/legal-stay-in-poland/social-security-number.html
Of course you don't need to register, to apply for pesel either.

Study / Universities in Poland and ancient Polish pride [4]

You mean school where only Polish people (Pole forefathers) are allowed to become students? No such place exist in Poland (at least I deeply doubt). Even conservative Catholic universities are open for other faith foreigners, different race students.

Any ideas??

Yes. Create your own university of this type. Maybe is there a gap to fill?

Law / I am citizen of EU. What happens when i register in Poland? [4]

First off what is it that you register for?, PESEL or Karta Pobytu?

You need Karta Pobytu to legalise your stay. You are EU citizen with intention to work in the country, so in order to stay here legally more than 6 months, you should obtain the paper. The foreigner from EU without this document, after 6 month period, should demonstrate that he continues to actively seek employment and has a real chance for it.

PESEL

The PESEL number is mandatory for all permanent residents of Poland and for temporary residents living in Poland for over 2 months.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PESEL
When you work in Poland - granting PESEL number is done at the written request of the taxpayer (eg. the employer);

Life / Did you send your children to regular Polish preschool or English one? How did your children find it? [7]

Children learn very fast, especially in early age. I think it would be better idea to give them to Polish preschool - they would know Polish language, and still do not forget English. Preschool isn't a regular school, so there is no such pressure on the child - it should get used to the language pretty fast, meet new friends, enjoy. I think it can only positively affect your child's development.

Law / Prawo autorskie - copyright / trademark of a business name in Poland [18]

Nothing is automatically protected. You should take care about everything yourself.
You may register either your business name itself or the name with graphics - whole logo. In the second case the fee is of course higher, yet you pay extra for every colour in the sign.

Law / How to obtain Polish Nationality, and register residency [4]

3 months? Not so fast. In order to obtain Permanent Residency card - you need to be in marriage with Polish Citizen at least 3 years and living here from at least 2 years (uninterrupted stay).

And then:

For recognition as a Polish citizen may apply a foreigner who resides permanently in Poland for at least 2 years on the basis of the permanent residence permit or a residence permit for a long-term EU resident, and who remains married for at least 3 years with the person holding Polish citizenship.

They were developing old black/white films, maybe they still do. Ask.

Study / Training for Teaching Assistants in Warsaw [2]

Is this something that would be valued in Poland?

If it is enough practical knowledge, skills included, for example first steps for searching a job in UK, starting new business, ability to fulfill official letters, papers, etc - the answer is yes.

Is there are market for this?

Since the UK borders are still open, and new employers are yet welcomed there - yes. Lot of young people see their future abroad.

Would it be beneficial to provide a more intensive full time course over 10-14 weeks or a part time course over 20-30 weeks?

Full time course with guaranteed job / internship would be best solution.

Would Polish schools welcome the opportunity to assist in the training through the offer of school placement for students on this proposed course?

It depends how many students would volunteer, and how the school could benefit. Good business plan required.

Life / Tribute to Stanisław Lem - recommended books to read? [13]

I read everything what Lem had on the cover. Although it was long time ago, and I liked everything what he wrote, I would recommend the most famous collection of short stories - The Cyberiad.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cyberiad
But when you fall in Lem's world and you like to be there, there's no way out - you have to read everything.

Life / Internet (in excess of 100GB pm) without contract in Gdansk? [5]

And what about contract for an indefinite period? for example if you know you would be in Gdansk for three months, you'll pay just for the 3 months (with one month's notice --> so 2 months contract + the 1 month notice period)

Then you have quite good internet, without any data limits - check their offer:
wave.com.pl/oferta/internet

For example 40gb download, 4gb upload 85pln/month (and one-time installation fee - 50pln)
According to their regulations, guaranteed speed is 1/4 of the contract max - so 10/1 in this case.

Language / Popular simple children's books in Polish? [11]

It got very good opinions as I see. It's a shame though, that most Polish children didn't read it. It has been more than 40 years before the book was published here - first edition in Brasil 1964, and in Poland - 2009!

Some of rewiews:

I bought Fikus for my godson at the fair in the Palace of Culture, Warsaw. From what I know he already has a pink elephant "period". Will there be any mascot - a Fikus replica?

The author has a keen eye and feeling. My three and five-year kids squealed with joy, they liked the book such much. They already have Plush elephant at home, so do not asking for a new one. Just overheard that they want to change his name to Fikus. I wonder if this maneuver succeeds...

Fikus penetrated through the soul of the child, knowing his desires, secrets and dreams. This elephant made of several rags is ordinary because authentic and extraordinary - the world is constantly impresses him. Each young child has their Fikus. Adults sometimes meet him - those who managed to keep a bit of their naivety and spontaneity.

Real Estate / Annual wspolnota (owners committee) meeting-prejudicial treatment of foreigners in Poland? [4]

I think it's pretty common in Polish reality. I also received those letters just before the meeting. If I'm not mistaken it even happened that I received the results of Wspolnota deliberations without any further notice about gathering. It depends on housing cooperative - but they all are unfavourable for most residents. Numerous complaints and lawsuits are proof of this.

You may even demand in the court the annulment or cancellation of a resolution of the Wspolnota, if you were not able to arrive and properly prepare for the Meeting, and the resolutions violated your benefits.

Real Estate / Can foreigners buy land, house, or apartment in Poland? [60]

I have found some reports, check the Report of the Minister of Internal Affairs on the implementation in 2013 of Act from 24 March 1920 about Acquisition of Real Estate by Foreigners

orka.sejm.gov.pl/Druki7ka.nsf/0/908E8A0C4FC6E3F5C1257CAE0035E4BE/$File/2264.pdf

PART I
CHAPTER I - CONDITIONS FOR THE ACQUISITION OF REAL ESTATE BY FOREIGNERS
CHAPTER II - SCALE OF INTEREST IN REAL ESTATE ACQUISITION BY FOREIGNERS IN THE YEAR 2013 - PERMITS
CHAPTER III - RECORDS OF REAL ESTATE, EQUITY INVESTMENT COVERED BY FOREIGNERS
...
PART II - STATISTICS - RECORDS

But in regards to agricultural land purchased: inspection shows that the data are incomplete due to the lack of full control over the acquisition of Polish agricultural land by foreigners.

Foreigners become owners of agricultural land in Poland by acquisition of shares in Polish companies which owns the land. However, the Interior Ministry does not have full data on the scale of Polish land acquisition by foreigners. The ministry data is three, four times lower than the actual operations.
