History / Which countries are Polands friends, which are Polands enemies? [75]

My dad taught me: You can't go fighting the globe & convincing others to help you fight wars WITHOUT permitting them to then later call your home their own.

That's why Ireland is full of Foreigners.

The numbers speak for themselves, the rapid urbanisation providing housing and employment for the majority of the population means that the Communist regime did lift an awful lot of people out of absolute poverty.

You're mad! that is Communist propaganda. Non-Communist countries lifted more people out of absolute poverty than any communist countries did without the fanfare. Many Communist countries made their people's lives a misery, look at Stalin, Mao, North Korea, Albania / Enver Hoxha, Ceausescu , most of the others weren't Paradises, they just suffocated their people and the countries just stagnated, Living-standards improved at only a snail's pace, there was no innovation only a bad imitation of the West. Fiat up-dated his fleet and sold off it old decades obsolete equipment and designs and Bang! We hav the Lada! Russian just bought their whole factories and transported them to their Empire.

After the War Austria and Czechoslovakia had roughly the same income per head, 45 years later Austria had an income per head 4 times that of Czechoslovakia, I think the contrast between West Germany and East Germany was even greater, and of course the contrast between South Korea and North Korea is ridiculous. North Korean one of the poorest countries in the World has regular famines and is considered the most oppressiv country in the World and South Korea is one of Asian's success stories, has one highest living-standards in Asia, full democratic rights and good quality of Life. Look at the contrast between the old Hong Kong and mainland China, Hong Kong had an income per head about the same as Italy whereas mainland China had the world's biggest Famines, which would you prefer?

I don't see why brits hate us. Our pilots (some of the best around) helped them fight ON THEIR LAND and LOST THEIR LIVES for THEIR land.

It is you that Hate Us. it is you that talk $h!t about us and about Historical figures like Churchill, it is you that think that we owe you, think you entitled to everything in Britain, who look down upon and sneer at the people of Britain.

History / Which countries are Polands friends, which are Polands enemies? [75]

Something about all the different countries marching together after the war ended, but did not invite Polish soldiers to march with them??

Was that a Communist or a Russian documentary?

Polish living standards were pretty dreadful even before the war and improved considerably under the PRL.

Are you mad? Living-standards in the Iron Curtain countries never kept up the West European countries. Take Austria and Czechoslovakia, after the War that had roughly the same Living-standard after decades of Communist rule, Austria had income per head 4 x times that of Czechoslovakia. Just look at the difference in Living-standards between North nad South korea, socialism doesn't work.

Life / The Best Things About Poland [23]

Is that right?I always thought it originated from medieval times

I used to believ that romantic story, all to do the visor on a old Knight's Helmet and closing it, meant to be from the Normans, but apparently it started with over-sized Army head dresses about 2-3 hundred years ago. People used to raise their hats when passing a woman or an officer, but that became impractical with these large elaborate head-dresses, so soldiers wer order to merely "clap" the the peak and giv the impression of lifting it. then merely touch it with the hands. The palms down salute came from embarrassed sailors with dirty hands saluting with their palms down to avoid showing their dirty hands.

I like the things you mentioned but I would prefer it if you used diffeent language at the beggining

No, I hav to be honest. -You are a people with self-esteem problems or something, and you don't even recognize your distinctiv 2 fingered salute and your Rogatywka as stylish.

Life / The Best Things About Poland [23]

I thought I would start a thread about what is good about Poland, /Polish people. To be honest I know very little about Poles/Poland really, but hav been completely shocked and disappointed by what I hav learnt, but....

I'll giv you 3 things that are good about Poland:

1. Th Polish 2 finger Army Salute:

Distinctiv and original. (Did you know that the British invented the modern army salute?)

2. the Rogatywka the distinctiv four-cornered head-dress of the Polish army.

Rogatywka

Rogatywka

Unique, stylist and distinctive.

3. Golabki

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

I'd say 9 out of 10 who served alongside the Poles would probably have gone along with Anders too)...Realistically, one cannot expect however that any victory over the Soviets would have come lightly. Probably tens of thousands of American and British dead....

and surely all the conquered people, such the Baltic states, the Ukrainians, the Georgians would hav joined in on the allies'/liberators side as well? Finland could hav got back it's stolen land, the Balts, their freedom, Ukraine could be a free and independent country, so on,

Google 'Gallipoli, Churchill, war crime' and see what others have to say about this man... ;)

Do you know how close Churchill was to winning this battle? 6 shells, The Turkish forces wer down to their last 6 shells, when the anglo-French forces called a halt and retreat. 6 shells.

If the Anglo-french had carried on fighting another 5-15 minutes Gallipoli would be proclaimed a great victory these days.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

You wouldn't find many examples where German weaponry/tech was the most advanced in 1939...

You kidding aren't you? Britain, for example, was still using as its main battle rifle, a rifle from before WWI, a rifle first adopted by the British Army in 1888! The British wer still using the same Helmet they used in WWI, they weren't prepared for War at all. They desperately kept trying to buy time in order to giv themselves enough time to re-arm when they thought in 1936, War with Hitler was inevitable, just 3 years later they wer at War, barely ready. No, the Germans had the best and latest equipment.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

the key factor was that no one was able to face the Germans , one on one back then and even if the Brits and'or French, tried to help Poland, they would be slaughtered just like anyone else. The mistake they made was to promise help that was never realistic but obviously expected.

It was a treaty to frighten Hitler, and it worked for a bit until he got Stalin's co-operation to invade Poland and divide it up.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

Of course they were friends and allies of both Britain and the US to deny that is to falsify history.

Who's Ally? Who was Stalin allied to before he was "Allied" with us? HITLER.Stalin was Hitler most important ally, without Stalin, Hitler couldn't hav started WWII, Hitler's other allies wer, in some cases, a Burden, Mussolini for example. When the Italians cocked-up in Northern Africa, Hitler had to send his troops, and when the Italians cock-up in invading Greece Germany again had to send troops to sort out their mess, meaning hitler had to delay it's attack on the Soviet Union by a month, imagine if they turned up in Moscow one month earlier befor the Winter had kicked in? Imagine. History would be so different.

Yeah The western allies knew that as well so why did they send POWs and others back to the Soviet Union to be murdered?

I didn't learn about this until I was 21, Stalin was never taught in our schools and was never represented on our Television, it was just Hitler. Most of Labour Party wer pro-Soviet and secretly worshiped Stalin, and they ran the education system and the TV after the War and still do so right up to now.

Churchill and the British may have wanted to stab their communist friends in the back but calmer heads prevailed.

The Communist wer never our friends they just wanted to stab us in the back. They wer totally insincere in all of their actions, their joint invasion and stitching up of Little Poland is just one example!!!!

Barney (btw. most Brits on PF), I regret to report, you've been brainwashed by the communist propaganda machine and you believe in the invincibility of the great Soviet Union. What you say is based on your beliefs and not on facts. None of it can be proved anymore so let's agree to disagree. Whatever will be said from now on, will be a pure waste of time for both of us.

Maybe the West did over estimate the power of the Soviet Union, but i remember the shock of reading about Stalin and his absolute ruthlessness, and cruelty and his total disdain for the value of the human Lives he had conquered.

Rubbish, in terms of population the US has by far been the worst polluter for quite a while now.

Rubbish is what you put into your rivers:

"...Many of the world's leading environmental agencies have long
centered the focus of their attention on the continued pollution
of the Danube River. Yet it was only with the fall of the East's
communist regimes that scientists and government officials began
to realize the seriousness of the environmental havoc which the
destructive industrial policies of the former communist regimes
had wrought on the Danubian watershed. Industrial pollution is
especially high on the Danube because the former communist
masters in Eastern and Central Europe sought lucrative short-term
production gahls, often at the price of environmental
degradation."

Cleaning up After Communism

When the Iron Curtain finally collapsed in November 1989, the world saw for the first time the great environmental cost of decades of communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe

YOU KILLED THE ARAL SEA!!!!

"...Formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world with an area of 68,000 square kilometres (26,300 sq mi), the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. By 2007, it had declined to 10% of its original size, splitting into four lakes - the North Aral Sea, the eastern and western basins of the once far larger South Aral Sea and one smaller lake between North and South Aral Seas.[4] By 2009, the southeastern lake had disappeared and the southwestern lake retreated to a thin strip at the extreme west of the former southern sea"

IDIOTS!!!

COMMUNISM WAS A DISASTER FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!! EVEN FOR THE ANIMALS!!!!!!

Pretty well true. Stalin and the Americans had it sewn up between them. The UK, France, Poland etc could not have done a thing.

The Americans wer naive, not malicious!

ha yeah right.

What? and the your Beloved Soviet Union had respect for other countries right to self-determination? and they respected Human Rights?

and Germany were fighting for what exactly? and what did GB have exactly - something about the sun never setting, i bet you love that though. You are biased beyond belief.Patriotic racist fool.

? so that makes Stalin and your Beloved Soviet Union's behaviour alright?

The opposit to your Communism was our Democracy combined with Freedom, Human Rights and respect for other countries. The Soviet Union wer Imperialist Expansionists, they wanted to rule the World.

All those communist countries as capitalist? jeeze we would have hardly any natural resources left at all by now.

Capitalist? You mean DEMOCRATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Communist countries had industries as well, so used up natural resources, and they wer the World's worst polluters. The Soviet Union had one factory in it's Polar circle that pumped more sulphur into the atmosphere than did the whole of Italy! COMMUNIST = WORLD'S WORST POLLUTERS!!!!!!!!!

Churchill and the British may have wanted to stab their communist friends in the back but calmer heads prevailed.

It was the Communists that stab everybody in the Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The soviets did demonstrate a degree of flexibility in stopping when they did and giving up a large part of Berlin and their withdrawal from Austria.

Stalin was hoping that by "Giving up" Austria the Allies (The Real Allies) would giv up Germany, as he suggested.

I agree with that. The Soviet Union (?) Empire has a lot to answer for. A whole wasted Century, they dragged Europe back and stop any real development in the conquered countries of their eastern European Empire, forced the West to spend £billions and £Billions of £'s spending on defense and armies and fighting proxy Wars, propping up 3rd Dictators who they hated, wasted our energy, our talent, our chance. Imagin if the Patton /Churchill plan had been carried through, we would had hav 60-65 years of Peace, no Korean War, No Vietnam war, No Mao, No Kim Il Sung, No Pol Pot, No Enver hoxha, No Ceausescu, No Derg, no famine in Ethiopia, no famine in North Korea, No civil Wars in Mozambique, No civil War in Angola, so much misery, the whole history of the Soviet Union is about suffering, misery, betrayal, failure, stupidity and the meglomania of the Ruling Elite.

Rubbish. They didn't want or start the War. All these posts sound very much like what Communist would say, don't you think you hav been indoctrinated? all this talk of betrayal and money, and stealing someone's gold, sounds just like the gibberish Communists used to sprout..
