Genealogy / Unanswered Polish names requests - anyone have information on the following? [21]

It is thoughtful of you to put them together PD.

They were put together by someone else, I'm just finishing the task on their behalf and thanks to them for doing it. :)

it's just a bunch of surnames.. nothing really to write about them.. some have meaning some don't.. some may not even be real.. just names, i tell ya.

True indeed. Some of them don't mean anything or have any known origin but others don't so if anyone has any information on any of the names it would be appreciated if they would write about it here.

UK, Ireland / Time for the Poles from the UK to go home [437]

I don't agree with Winston's choice of words, but I would think that more would agree with him than you might think.

I'm not under any illusions about the feelings of people regarding immigration and I also agree that immigration needs to be more tightly controlled. Foreign criminals should not be getting into this country or any other. Limits should be placed on how many immigrants can enter. However, his declaration of 95% is not backed up with evidence and as we all know, these stats come from on the street polls of less than 1000 people usually.

Id hazzard a guess that your social circles consist of quite a lot of Poles, ergo your social circle are hardly going to speak negatively about mass immigration. To do so, would be considered rude.

The good thing about my social circles is that we tend to be able to talk about any subject, including immigration. I have Scottish friends who'll bring up the problems with immigration and Polish friends who will agree with them. We also manage to have these conversation without descending into argument.

Your article from the Times shows research by MORI where 975 were asked. While it shows the opinions of 975 people of voting age it doesn't show accurately the views of the nation. Without knowing more about the people asked you can't take polls seriously (not just these immigration ones - any kind) and they will be variable depending on where you ask them. Like if I stand on my front street and ask fifty passers-by if they like sunbeds I'll get a different result than if I were to stand outside a tanning salon and ask the same question. The only way to get a true account is to ask every single person in Britain aged 18 or over.

I'm not saying people in the UK don't want immigration controls to change, I'm just saying these polls can be manipulated. That's all.

95% of the British people

At a guess I'd say that percentage comes from about 100 people asked in a predominately BNP area. You can come up with any statistic you like if you ask a certain number of people in a specific area. Like I could go to Spain and ask 100 people in certain areas if they would like the British ex-pats to return home. In one area a high percentage would say yes and in another area a high percentage would say no. Easily manipulated are these statistics.

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN OUR COUNTRY...LEAVE!!!

Speak for yourself. BTW what is your country?

Feedback / Editing time too short (5 minutes currently) [60]

if you are the last person to post, you cannot post again until somebody else has.

Correct.

Well, when I went over,

All I could really suggest there is to use the preview button to proof-read before you post.

I doubt the edit time will change but maybe if you speak nicely to Admin he'll change it. ;)

Good pictures Sokrates and thanks for posting them.

I agree that Świętokrzyska Street has the look of 20's New York, probably because of the Prudential building.

Enjoyed look at the pics. :)

Love / How common is it for husbands in Poland to open their wife's mail ? [30]

Kojak333 if you're really that worried about it I'd suggest sending it to her place of employment if you're clear about her name, job title and department (especially if it's a big health care centre).

I imagine you'd be able to send it to her home without issue though.

Getting a friend involved might not be what your friend wants but if they're willing to help then that would be great but I wouldn't have them hand deliver it, that might be a bit much for your Mother. You'd also have to trust your friend to post it on once they received it.

Good luck.

News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

So what happens when the sex offender is a woman ?

Good question.

What are the stats in Poland regarding male and female sex offenders? Anyone know?

A neutered guy will still breed, but won't get her pregnant.

Possibly. The idea is their sex drive would be lowered though.

News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

It's a bit like bolting the door after the horse has fled. However, it could stop repeat offenders.

The whole chemical castration is nonsense... and has nothing to do with real castration...

You don't think it will help at all then?

News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

Poland passes law to chemically castrate certain sex offenders

In the news today:

Polish MPs have passed legislation making it obligatory to chemically castrate certain sex offenders.

Under the law anyone found guilty of raping children under 15, or close relatives, will be given drugs to lower their sex drive.

[news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8275236.stm]

MPs in the lower house of parliament have voted for Poland to become the first nation in the EU to chemical castrate pedophiles.

MPs voted almost unanimously, Friday morning, to pass an amendment to the penal code which would enable chemical castration.

USA, Canada / What do you think about NM (New Mexico) state? [40]

The chances of someone who has no interest in Poland or Polish people reading this thread are slim. People come to PF to read, learn, chat about Poland or Polish related subjects. If you like, I can take "Polish" out the title and put the thread in the off-topic lounge. That way anyone can chat about anything in New Mexico. Otherwise, to remain in the public forum, it must have a Polish theme.

Thanks.

Does anyone know of any Polish Festivals in Southern New England coming up over the summer months? Thanks!

I couldn't find any. If you or any one else does hear of one please post it on PF. :)

Any good tips on navigating the site and/or communicating more efficiently?

Plenty. Try the FAQ and Feedback section, most things you'll find in there. :)

Mr Chopin, thanks for sharing. The tastebuds in PD Manor are going overtime. Although they may have to wait a bit before the fantasy is fulfilled.

I'm interested to know if anyone would write about Polish food for the ongoing competition because I am sure there any people who know more about cooking for occasion like weddings, funerals etc or just cooking in general. :)

Yeah that's a bit strange that she isn't going to anywhere else in the UK.

I'll miss her singing that Ella Elle la song though, it's great. Although I know there's another reason the males might want to see her ;)

Oh yes that would be good. And the kopytka as well. And anything else that anybody happens to have. :)

UK, Ireland / Polish Beer In The UK [98]

That must have set you back a fair price.

I'm trying to think of the other Polish beer in Tesco. Not Zyweic. Actually it might not have been Tesco, it might have been the Polish shop near my house. Anyway, I can't remember the name of the beer but I know that Tesco is stocking more and I know that my local Polish shop has a bigger range.

If anyone cares. ;)

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

What has gone wrong?

Wrong wording in the job advertisements?

They give free drinks to their friends,

I get free drinks in my local from the manager, who is only installed by the brewery. She's not Polish.

Incidentally, if anyone is giving away free drinks it should be docked from their pay. Or your friend didn't realise that?

when offered a drink they choose the most expensive or a double of their favourite.

See, that's just smart.

Language / I need advice - how long does it take to learn Polish? [70]

Everyone takes different lengths of time to learn so don't worry if you appear slower than someone else who is learning because you'll also be picking it up faster than another person.

It all depends on the amount of time you can give to learning each day, each week and how easy or difficult you are finding it. Some aspects of the language you may pick up straight away and others you may have great difficulty with. Don't worry about it. It will come.

It's good that you understand people when they speak slowly, it means you're not far away from understanding them when they speak quickly. :) Keep at it. :)
