Language / Pol/Eng Dictionary for Mobile Phones [15]

Hey

A friend of mine has a Pol/Eng:Eng/Pol translator/dictionary on his mobile phone which he downloaded from the Internet for free. However, when I try to download it, my virus scan is going nuts. Currently trying to download to PC so that I can scan it, before transferring to phone.

So does anyone know of something would be the same as above but would download without viruses and would be suitable for a Sony Ericsson, brand new model phone?

Thanks

PD :)

UK, Ireland / Polish Festivals/Exhibitions/Events in UK [91]

found this info PD via google for you

londontown.com/LondonEvents/PolishFestivalVIII/c7609?utm_source=London Monthly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=LondonMonthly26

there you go :D its about last years so maybe finding out some links from it will prove fruitful

Thanks for the link, I just had a look. Sounds like it was fun and went down well yet I don't see any evidence on that site that it's happening this year (or has happened). I'll keep searching.

:)

Out of interest...

If there were to be a large Polish festival in the UK next summer maybe (like TOP perhaps) how many of you would attend?

I did have a (quick - cos I am working) look through Polonia UK but couldn't see anything so apologies if I am repeating a topic previously written about.

Just reading about Taste Of Polonia in Chicago (and wishing I had been there) I was wondering if there are any Polish festivals in the UK. Or does anyone know of any in the pipeline?

Thanks
PD :)

Polonia / Ever been to Sweden? [185]

marvellous sheds.

of great interest to donkeys of course...

Sweden and Norway have never really interested me, Iceland on the other hand. Not been but I think its a place I would be making plans to see in the next couple of years.

UK, Ireland / Warning to British people visiting Poland!! Don't get drunk and smash the place up! [447]

it is the well behaved, civil majority go unnoticed and an ignorant few are causing trouble.

Very true Daffy!

You never get a news report that says something like "One hundred thousand Brits behaved themselves abroad this week".

Same goes for a Saturday night out clubbing - people only noticed the w**kers who get absolutely bladdered and then started fighting with anything and its shadow.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Besides the cultural differences, people are people.

Very, very true.

rude in Poland is while in line/queue people like to get in front of you.

This is not exclusive to Poland - try getting on a bus in Edinburgh during the rush hour...if you're not fast then you're trampled underfoot... :-)

Hey no worries! Thanks for taking the time to post it! :-)

I've saved the website for future reference! I think I'm going to get a Polish friend to cook them with me at first! lol :-)

Amazing. Like you say, the dresses are so lady like but also so simple as well. Not like the hats...

Isn't it amazing to get just a little snippet of a time before any of ours? I wish that I had something to put here but I'm really looking forward to seeing old pics that might appear here.

Hey this is great. When was it taken?

I love hearing the history and seeing pictures. I have none to share that I am aware of so far :-(

Language / Use of Kochanie in Polish [37]

Can 'kochanie' not be used as a friendly term like here in Britain some friends say to each other 'how are you darling?'. Maybe like 'jak sie masz kochanie' to a friend???

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

It would be a pity if the word Scot would also become an offensive word

It most certainly would be a pity. Luckily, at the moment it seems to a proud word used by Scots - "I am a Scot". but I have heard "Scot" used in a derogatory way - sad, but true.

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

It's just like with the word Paki.

I've often wondered about this. I would assume, following the rule that made "Paki" offensive, that "Scot" or "Jock" will become offensive and therefore not "PC". I know people who find "Jock" an offensive term towards Scottish people but I do not think this is offensive. Its actually Scottish for "John" so probably is on the same line as Polak at the moment.

our people don't always behave nicely when they drink alot.

True Justyna! There are elements in every society that will let them down. The Brits abroad have a reputation which is unfortunate. No one ever hears about the thousands of Brits who go abroad every year and never cause any trouble and who are mortified by the behaviour of a small minority.

News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

Funny how some people need to raise their self esteem by trying to portray how well off they are.......

I've never felt the need and I don't think Polska Doll has either !!

I can't be bothered with people who try to win arguments by the size of their bank account. I never tell anyone what I earn. Only myself, my bank manager and the wages officer in my work know exactly how much it is. All anyone else needs to know is that the bills get paid!

Why does this Pete guy called himself "Polish" when he quite clearly does not like the country or the people from it!!!

I am from the UK (which, Pete, is bigger than just England), and I love the fact that it is busy with people from other countries and cultures. I have made many Polish friends over the last couple of years and I would not be without them.

In the place where I work there are Polish people who work for just above minimum wage and work 12 hours a day with only 1 hour and 30 mins off for breaks, but they rarely complain and just won't entertain the thought of going on the dole. I might add that they are working in the kitchens and domestic side of things and are filling spaces that we have advertised relentlessly but no one has been interested in.

I might also add that I admire the guts of people who can come to another country and make a new life away from their families and friends and at a relatively young age. Most of the Polish people I have met speak pretty good English. I myself speak limited Polish and German, certainly not enough to get away with in either Poland or Germany.
