Much much worse. Though all the billboards round town showing the Lepper picture suggests there's a precedent for this sort of advert in Poland.

Isn't there also a bit that is actually called Stare Miasto? A bit north of the Main Town.

History / Is 5th partition of Poland possible? What kind? How? When? [73]

The only thing that comes to my mind right now is the mass purchase of Polish land by foreigners. Some Poles are afraid that Poland will be bought out and nothing will be Polish anymore. They call it sort of partition.

I don't think it makes the slightest difference what nationality the owner of some land is. Thousands of British people live next door to Polish neighbours - it doesn't make their street Poland. Worth mentioning that great swathes of Norfolk and Suffolk farmland belong to foreign companies and those places are both as English as they ever were.

I also don't see a further partition. There may be more regional autonomy - this seems to be the way Europe is moving, however something like the Schleswig-Holstein issue was controversial enough there and just wouldn't happen in PL within the foreseeable future. And even in Schleswig-Holstein, they still fly the Danish flag.

That's been done already, with the Andrzej Lepper magazine cover. His stubble that day looked just like a Hitler moustache - quite a sensation at the time.

UK, Ireland / Polonization of Britain - Tipping Point Confirmed in 2011 Census [97]

You also wouldn't see organizations like the BNP and UKIP in existence

Why not? Both of those have equivalents pretty well everywhere in Europe.

And Polish immigration to the UK is nothing new - I've known both Poles and people,of Polish extraction all my life - there were at least 50,000 in my county even before EU entry.

Quite probably, the man you spoke to wasn't a particularly good observer. This observation is often made to excuse the prejudices of Poles in the UK by Poles in the UK.

That's probably the case. Even if it wasn't, such a vast influx of people in such a short time is bound to have all sorts of effects. In many ways it's a tribute to both the British and the Poles who've come that there hasn't been a major problem and it has gone so well.

News / Predictions about Poland for 2013 [85]

Crikey! I do see what you mean though, and think this could be a very good thread if it is on topic.

Re. numbers of Poles and economic predictions, I was wondering today whether their employment prospects will be affected much by Romanians and Bulgarians coming. Eric Pickles is refusing to give an official estimate (and the last administration got egg on their faces by saying that only 14000 would come after EU enlargement) but the Daily Telegraph are predicting hordes of them.

Will they drive down prospects (and remittances) for Poles by forcing salaries down? There are a lot of highly skilled people from those countries as well as people desperate enough for work at the bottom end of the market.

Or has the post-EU Polish community begun to stabilise? And do people remit from benefits etc? And will the benefits squeeze affect that?

Also, what will happen to the Zloty? A rise would suit Polish holidaymakers but be otherwise bad for a country that exports so much.

What drives a person to make such a claim about his country

Hard facts and the topic of this thread, sweetie

and why does he choose a pugalistic metaphor?

Why not? If it fits, use it

Hahahahahahaha

Edit

As for bragging, if people are beating a path to your door, and the rest of the world look up to you for culture both high and low, music, science, business, literature, why not?

It's actually nice, at home in PL when people make a point of telling me they're an Anglophile - it happens quite a lot. And knowing Poles, better than you ever will Dessie,I can assure you they mean what they say.

Of course other countries are still precisely that and we're a long way from being 'Polonised'. The great unwashed in any society - and Poland in no exception - have a very limited and faulty idea about what goes on outside their little world.

Britain is however multicultural. And cosmopolitan, drawing cultural influences from many sources but above all punching way above our weight and giving far more of our culture back to the world than most places.

Travel / There is only one railway station in Warsaw Chopin airport? [12]

It does seem unusual, doesn't it.

Everything's running without problem and there are no delays, but you're right, there are far more police than normal and I noticed they were really making a meal of the security checks - much strict than usual.

A quickie. Does anyone know why the security at Okecie is so much stricter today than normal. I haven't seen it like this since just after 9/11. Guards everywhere. It's all running smoothly as usual, however I use Okecie a lot and the security presence is very different today. Are they expecting a state visit or something?

No brow beating, no awkwardness - at least not from my side. But when you quote statistics, it's good to be precise. 'Recent', means recent.

If you'd clarified what you meant, instead of trying to pick an argument, all would have been avoided.

disputing the figure of 800,000+ Polish passport holders residing in the UK as of Wednesday 12 December 2012. He has given the Census 2011 + 40,000 as the current figure of Polish passport holders in the UK

Once again, it looks like you've missed the point. I suspect deliberately.

You claimed that 800,000 Poles had recently arrived. Nothing to do with total number of passport holders. In fact 45,000 have arrived over the past year and a half according to the Home Office.

For some reason you don't want to admit your mistake and are now pretending that both you and I had said something entirely different - not a surprise, since lying is something we're unfortunately used to from you here.

Sad, really.

Law / Forex Market in Poland [16]

It's no bad thing. The Financial Times referred to the Polish habit of getting Swiss Franc and Euro mortgages as "an act of collective madness", and rightly so.

As you well know, we aren't interested in the number of Poles in the UK. Nor are we interested in the number who moved to the UK since EU accession 8 years ago. We are interested in your statement

800,000 Poles have recently arrived in the UK

The Home office says 45,000 came between April 2011 and September 2012. Less than a tenth of the figure you said had recently arrived. The mistake you made is obvious. You included the entire post-EU entry figure.

Rather sad that you can't admit your error.

Food / What made in Poland produce would you recommend [110]

One of those things that's good if it's made well and dreadful if it's made badly. Most restaurants don't take much pride in it and I've more often than not had it served Iuke warm and over salted/under seasoned.

It comes into it's own when it's home cooked (and piping hot).

Warszawski, your original claim, as you well know, was

800,000 Poles have recently arrived in the UK

Do you still stand by that rather wild assertion, or admit it was a mistake?

Re. your question, as I've said twice before and am quite happy to repeat, the official Home Office figure for the number of Polish citizens who arrived between Spring 2011 and Autumn 2012 is already on the previous page.

By the way, re. your "anal" comment, you do realise we're talking about economic statistics? Precision and clarity of thought are paramount. If you think accuracy is "anal", you may as well mix up GDP, QE, BoE, USD etc. After all, they've all got letters in them

Brow beating? I think there's a bloody big difference between "have been" and "have recently arrived". You don't need to be an English Teacher (by the way, I'm not one) to see the difference.

So, were you wrong when you said

800,000 Poles have recently arrived in the UK

or when you started to backpedal today and pretend you'd said

there has not been 800,000+ Polish born workers in the UK recently

??

As for winning or losing a debate, I don't see a debate. Just a hugely incorrect statement that you made and were not prepared to retract, even when called out on it

what information do you have to prove there has not been 800,000+ Polish born workers in the UK recently

You've forgotten (or deliberately omitted) a couple of small but key words from that sentence. You originally said:

800,000 Poles have recently arrived in the UK

So, do you mean "have recently arrived" or "have been"?

There is a big difference.

Life / Poland's concord of cultures [86]

Poland always feels far less of a coastal nation and those few canals that exist aren't used nearly as much.

If you're looking for an interesting concord, England as the major part of an island has always been a great seafaring nation but lacks hardwood to build ships. For centuries it was imported from Poland, so much so that the word spruce is derived from z Prus.

You'll probably have to wait for a while to see figures for 2013. Out of interest, what made you think that:

800,000 Poles have recently arrived in the UK
