What kind of problems could Polish citizenship create?

Making him an American citizen will burden him with tax returns and other forms but I still wouldn't think twice about it. The laws could change by the time he is an adult.

Do you think I still need to bring my birth certificate if we got married in Poland and my name is on our marriage certificate? They kept my last birth certificate and ordering a new one is a pain and will need to be translated.

Probably best to ask my mother in law to pay them a visit and find out what I'll need...

Hello. My wife and I would like to take our newborn to see his family in Poland as soon as possible.

We will apply for a British passport for him in the next couple of weeks.

Can he enter Poland on the British passport and then visit the USC there to apply for his Polish citizenship?

I ask because I am a US citizen and the local office embassy seems to say he couldn't enter the US with a foreign passport if he has a claim to US citizenship. I'm curious if something similar exists for Poland.

Hello. My Polish wife and I are planning a trip to the United States. We recently got married and she's changed her surname. How does she change the name in her passport? We don't live in Poland so can she do this at the embassy or does she need to return home?

I assume that she will need to apply for a new US visa for the new passport. Has anyone done this before? Does she need to apply again or can she just get a new vignette?

Thankfully this all worked out. I did need to two translated birth certificates with an apostille attached to each. The court and USC both kept it.

The key was submitting another wniosek that requested that the USC waive the 30 day requirement registration requirement.

The law is the law but everyone was very kind and understanding. This was in a small town so your mileage may vary.

Does the UCS birth certificate need to have an apostille? I won't have time to get that done.

Can I file another request to get the documents back or ask the judge at the hearing for them?

I'm in the process of trying to get legally married in Poland and I'm very short on time.

I have a court date to get a release from the obligation of presenting a document that says I can get married. The court required my birth certificate and my (future) mother in law is suggesting I need another birth certificate to present at the USC.

The US embassy and a few previous threads on this forum have suggested that I could go to court and then immediately go to the USC after a decision was made. I had assumed I could get my birth certificate with the translation back (or they could make a copy of it).

I've contacted the court but has anyone been through this and know what will happen? I don't have time to order another birth certificate and get it translated again. If this isn't going to be possible I'd like to try to cancel my flight.

Great. Thanks for the quick reply. You helped me last time I posted here but I want to make sure I have the process down:

1. Gather documents and get them translated

2. Go to the Regional court and petition for an exemption using the letter from the US embassy (I think I need to hire a translator as well). I need an appointment for this -- can my future mother in law make the appointment for me? The decision will be made on the day and will be finalised in 3 weeks.

3. The same day as the above, go the USC to register the wedding. I understand that you can't make an appointment for this but the decision from the above does not need to be final.

4. One month later or longer, get married.

What kind of birth certificate do I need to present in order to get married? My father has a copy of the original but I can also order a new one online. I can either get "computer certification" or "photocopy certification".

Does anyone know which type is required?

We'd like to have a civil wedding in Poland in September so hopefully we'll have enough time.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

I definitely want to follow the advice my government has issued. I didn't quite understand the last sentence but your reply has clarified it.

Basically, I need to request the exemption at the court and then register on the same day. This is convenient since this will reduce the amount of travel required. This should be done two to three months before the date of the wedding because the documents expire.

The only "complicated" part is actually arranging coinciding appointments with each body and hiring a translator. I will ask my future mother in law for help.

Would hiring a lawyer simplify the organisation of everything?

I am getting married in Poland later this year and I understand that I need to provide a document that indicates I am free to marry.

My government does not issue such a document has posted the following advice:

[...] you must petition the Regional Court at the place of residence of the Polish fiancé(e). You will have to obtain court appointment, which can take several weeks. When you have your appointment at court, you can present our letter as the reason you need to be released. The decision will be made the same day and it becomes final after three weeks. Since you cannot be married until one month after you have registered at the marriage office, you should register at the time you begin the process of obtaining the release.

Can I make an appointment at the court to obtain a release now even though I'm not getting married for several months? Does the decision expire? I don't quite understand how to arrange the timing of everything, particularly this court appointment and the registration process (despite the last sentence).

Language / Where to find perfective aspect of Polish verbs on the Internet? [4]

Hi all.

I'm a student of Polish and wanted to know if there was a good site on the net for getting the perfective aspect of a verb.

At the moment, I have several methods of checking:

- Use Wiktionary.org (limited number of verbs, or at least links to their perfective counterparts)
- Google the imperfective infinitive and see what comes up (usually unsuccesful)
- Guess a prefix and check it on Ling.pl (inefficient)

A dictionary is obviously best but I don't always have one on me.

Is there a better online Polish resource I am missing? Perhaps even one that costs money.

For example, I wanted to know the perfective of "siekać" and had to fall back to a dictionary to find it. I would like to be able to find this online.

I'm going to answer my own question because I just read the stick learning resource thread and found a dictionary whose results don't turn up in Google.

The best resources I've found are:

- Oxford Wordpower results from this site: portalwiedzy.onet.pl/tlumacz.html?qs=sieka%E6&tr=ang-auto&x=34&y=13
- WordReference.com: wordreference.com/plen/sieka%C4%87

Both sites listed the askpect dokonany of "siedać."
