Genealogy / How common is it for other people of Polish origin to discover they are actually Jewish? [127]

i can tell you that i know for some people in Serbia who are frustrated about their ancestry and has some frictions within themselves when it comes to mixed Jewish-Serbian marriages. If father is a Jew he don`t insist that much about Jewish nationality

My father is actualy a Serb and my mother Jewish lol. kako si brat? ti si srbin? My mother raised me Jewishm, but i rebelled against the whole Jewish religion thing in my teens. Don't belive in any religion but I still respect my Jewish and Serbian roots .

And I have the most un Jewish surname possible, It means Christmas (Bozic) in Serbian.

You innitialy didn`t grow up in the spirit of Serbian traditional family. tell me, did your father explained concept of Serbian SLAVA to you?

Not really as my mother raised me in England and my father left when I was very young. He always spoke to me in English, but I have tought myself some Serbian. He is from Banja Luka originally. my mother is from Israel (Polish Parents).

Turns out you Poles didn't really want the Jews back, my great-grandfather was a medic in the Polish army in the mid 30s and they used to beat him every night in a sack shouthing 'filhy zyd!.My grandfather's brother died fighting for Poland in '39, and when his famaily came back to ostrolenka after escaping to Russia during the war they were treated with nothing but contempt.

Maybe my grandpraents should have come back from being refugeess in Siberia to this? A nice warm welcome.

PS Jews were just sick and tired of being treated like crap, tossed from place to place at the whim of repressive anti semetic governments, tsars and kings, Zionism did not start becuase of the holocoust, it began in the 1880s.

And as DE comes from the States I took "we in the west" to refer to USA, although of course GB has responsibility too.

Britain was opposed to the creation of the state of Israel, after the Arab rebellion of 1936-39 they became pro arab, the Jews did it with their own toil and sweat. British officers were leading the Arab Jordanian Legion in the war of 1948 and refused to regonise Israel until 1951.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Merged: Are Poles annoyed at being refferd to as Eastern Europe?

As far as I see it Poland is in Eastern Europe and is refferd to as such by the media in the UK. But Iv'e heard that some Poles get pissed off at being referd to as Eassern Europe not Central.

I know Hungarians and Czech people do get quite annoyed but Serbs and Bulgarians have no problem with being from Eastern Europe.

Genealogy / How common was Polish-Jewish intermarriage? [21]

I think my grandmothers uncle in Pinsk was married to a Catholic Polish women. He was a middle class doctor, it was frowned upon by the family, but in my grandfathers poor religios family in Biyalstok it was completely unheard of to not marry a Jew. I wonder how common it was in other parts of Poland? I know it was quite common in Pre 1933 Germany.

Genealogy / How common was Polish-Jewish intermarriage? [21]

Most Polish origin (and other Ashkenazi) Jews do not look Middle Eastern, many of them look medditeranean, but not middle eastern, I'm sure somwhere along the line there was some European admixture.

They are Khazars a Turkic people.

niether do they look Turkic, that is a theory that hs been disproven. yes a small percenetage of Khazar DNA would have gone into the Jews of small parts of Russia sotherun Russia just North of the caucuses and south of the black sea, but thats a long way from Poland

Real Estate / Is there any chance I would be able to reclaim my grandfathers old house in Ostrolenka? [17]

All I know, is that in 1939 the Germans came for 2 weeks, ripped out my great-grandfathers gold teeth, looted the place and his were deported across to the border to Russia for the duration of the war.

I know my grandmothers place in Pinsk was flattened by the war, but there are still some valuables her father hid there, lying in the ground somwhere, maybe I will go to Pinsk to look for it.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

My parents-in-law are heavily Germanic (both of their parents are/were German). Yes, they are Polish.

My grandfather was born in a Jewish family in Bialstok, they never regarded themsleves or for that matter the Poles did not regard them as ethnic Poles.

How about you being a good troll, and just use one username per thread?
