Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

He is a most intelligent boy.

"He was a most peculiar man."
I think in these cases "most" is used as "very".
"He was a most intelligent boy." = "He was a very intelligent boy."
whereas:
"He was the most intelligent boy." = "He was more intelligent than the other boys."

And please don't ask me to talk about "parts of speech". My English was learned by trial and error, not study and analysis. :->

USA, Canada / The history of Polish mafia in Chicago, Illinois [51]

how to go about researching the polish mafia

First, try Polish mobs, Polish gangs, etc. mafia is Italian and most contemporary sources (I assume you're looking for prohibition era. If not, nevermind. :->) would not call the Polish gangs "mafia". Also, you might want to include Detroit in your search.

News / US-POLAND special relationship [20]

So Marek111111111, do you object to US policy when they intervene, or when they don't? Sounds like you're sitting on both sides of that fence.

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

We used to use the same stuffing to fill bell peppers, bake until the peppers are tender, then cover with tomato sauce and bake a bit more. I've never tried the mushroom sauce, but it sounds really good!

UK, Ireland / Raising Bilingual Children - How are you teaching your children? Your experiences? [74]

If you are like most parents you will pray that they will someday start talking until they do, then pray that they will someday shut up! :->

Kids always learn to speak differently to different people. The way they say something to Mom is not the way they say it to Dad. And the way they talk to kids at school is not the way they speak to the teachers. Why not take advantage of that and the presence of native speakers during the time of life when they are most receptive to learning language?

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

I don't know either, except that the one I have keeps my flat warm even in the coldest winters.

Right up until the time they decide to descale the boiler in the main plant in the middle of the winter.
And I don't always agree with their decision as to when it's cold enough to fire up the boilers or warm enough to shut them down.

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

Yeah. He might have gotten hit by a speeding ice cream truck while crossing the street to buy a pack of cigarettes.

And this is what happens to those very lungs. After only a few years.

You realize, of course, that the guy with the "healthy lung" is just as dead as the other guy, right?

History / Polish inventors - what have they ever given to the world? [101]

, the first submarine( human powered)

He may have invented A submarine. He did not invent the first submarine. The Hunley operated successfully 14 years previous, and The Turtle beat it by about 100 years.

News / Poland now soft-pedalling ACTA signing [107]

Two things about ACTA really bother me, and no one seems to be talking about them.
First is that under ACTA a person can be fined or jailed and their property confiscated on the basis of an accusation by an alleged copyright holder. After proving their innocence, the accused may apply for redress forcing the accuser to pay their court costs. Not damages, just court costs. Due process and presumption of innocence. Who needs 'em?

Second is that the commission controlling ACTA may modify it in any way they choose without the permission of the signatories. "Sign here, don't worry about the details. We'll fill that all in later."

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

I get your point about not installing a filter on a communal water tap, but maybe a water filter pitcher would work.

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

People often have trouble pronouncing your last name.

More like "You don't recognize your own name when it is properly pronounced."

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

I always thought I was mostly English/Irish, but according to Post #1 I'm about 90% Polish!

Soccer? Football? I thought it was piłka nożna.

USA, Canada / Any Poles in Orange County, CA? [40]

I moved from Orange County to Poland about a year and a half ago. I'm always bucking the trends!
Make sure you check out Jon's Market on Golden West street in Huntington Beach. They specialize in Central/Eastern European products not just Polish.

Typical Polish-American destruction of our wonderful language.

You might notice that he was speaking English, not your wonderful language.

Gyouza are fantastic.

STOP IT! Unless you can tell me where to buy some west of Wrocław! :->

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

Have you thought about buying something like a Brita water filter? Either one that fits on the tap or one that filters water into a special carafe?

Life / Polish dubbing in movies; why is it so that on polish television all the films are dubbed? [135]

It's not like you have to choose one way or another. Cable and sat TV have the technology to carry the original sound track, lektor and dubbing and subtitles in several languages. Then the client can choose how they want to view the show. I guess it's a case of the powers that be having learned their craft back in the old days. One of the best features of retirement is that I no longer have to hear management types saying "But that's the way we've always done it!".
