Life / Mental health problem or one of the grieving stages? Death and denial in Poland. [93]

No it is not. She is most definitely 100% convinced he is alive, or she's a brilliant actress, one of the two.

This is positively, most definitely mania. The fact that she is not bipolar, doesn't have mood swings etc. means that it is something or many things psychologically wrong. I had the exact same thing as a 14 year old (believed I was the best actress in all of Hollywood lol it cracks me up now) and when they put me on the meds for a few months, it didn't make me stop believing my delusions. The meds only made me more agitated, unhappy, and delusional than I had ever been before. I recovered completely on my own when I went off those toxins as I got more intelligent and matured over time, set goals, and worked out my own issues. I totally snapped out of it after about 10 months I went off the medication, but it doesn't sound like she will snap out of it too soon so medication may be your only hope because these delusions of hers have dug her into a very deep hole.

Before urging her to go to the psychiatrist, she should go the regular doctor and make sure all of her hormone levels are normal. Sometimes an overproduction of a certain hormone combined with psychological issues can make the nervous system go haywire. This is probably why I started to get it at age 14; I was having my first meunstral cycle. If her hormone levels are normal, and there is absolutely nothing going on with her physically that could contribute to her condition, I would probably have her check into the hospital if she won't get help. They can't do much of anything to her if she is acting the way you said she does. Just keep in mind that psychiatrists usually prescribe much more than a person absolutely needs, and she doesn't have to take everything they give her to come to the realization that she's delusional.

Life / Mental health problem or one of the grieving stages? Death and denial in Poland. [93]

I can see that, and I know what its like to have had delusions like that in a much, much milder form than her. For example, I was saying I was pregnant when I was not (which was really a subconscious reaction to not wanting to be forced to take any drugs) and I actually was thinking in my mind that I believed it for a couple of weeks. I didn't really believe that I was, but I was thinking it to comfort myself and it just took a bunch of different people telling me I was not pregnant and showing me some proof for me to snap out of it. The fact that she is highly intelligent could be making it look like it is more severe than it really is, because highly intelligent people think in a more sophistocated way than most people and its easier for them to believe their own delusions.

She can get over her psychosis by people forcing her to accept the truth. You just have to monitor her carefully when you are doing this since it is severe, she could do something crazy or dangerous if she withdraws to quickly from the delusions and panicks. Have you thought of getting the whole family together and having a talk with her and bombarding her with proof of her father's death?

You should know that psychiatric drugs are much much more dangerous and damaging than they say and they don't really do much to help a person. It is very very sad what they do to misled and confused people who need help. You should use them as an absolute last resort! If they put her on an antipsychotic, then she could have a permanently altered state of mind that is somewhat negative and not herself and could also have other harmful side effects like light headedness, high blood sugar, or TD. So, if you really care about her, at all costs take action now to avoid having to go to the psychiatrist.

I think I know what she has, I was told I had the same thing when I had a nervous breakdown at 14. She probably has temporary mania (that would explain her competency and ability to carry on and not be depressed) and is experiencing symptoms of psychosis. In this kind of psychosis, she would not hear or see things, but imagine false realities like she is and make up delusions to comfort herself. She knows deep down inside that her father is dead, but she's just separating herself from reality with the delusions. This is common in people of certain personalities, its just the way they cope with extreme stress when they break down. DO NOT take her to a psychiatrist, they will just drug her with a chemical lobotomy and mask the problem. Her mother is absolutely right, TIME is the best healer. She'll probably get over it in a year or two completely, so there is no need to drug her and a psychologist probably wouldn't help if she's highly intelligent and stubborn. You may just find that you'll have to let her believe her delusions, but just watch her carefully she could do something mildly crazy at any moment.

I am so glad that my parents didn't let them drug me as an outpatient with temporary mental illness and I got over it quickly without the help of drugs. Psychiatrists can't really do anything to help someone like that, its all experimental and those pills can be very brain damaging and addictive. You shouldn't have her take those unless she becomes dangerous or totally out of control, let her have her delusions.

Genealogy / Popular Polish Names during the 1920s through the 40s? [16]

Great, I thought so thanks. In the story, the couple is from a more rural area and the husband was supposed to inherit a farm, but it had to be sold so they decided to move to the city so he could get a job in a steel mill. They are about 20 but move in the 1940s and their daughter is born in 1942. I just said 1920s because I wanted their names to be something that was popular for children being born that time. If this location was impossible, I could easily change a few things so I guess I should just keep writing.

What about Zamosk, did that exist during that time? During the 1940s, weren't there any steel mills in Poland? My book is about a young couple about 20 who came from a more rural area so that the man could get a job in a steel factory.

Genealogy / Popular Polish Names during the 1920s through the 40s? [16]

I'm writing a historical fiction book that is set in Stalowa Wola in the 1940s, but I need some ideas for popular names for adults and young children so maybe tell me a few that were popular during the 1920s through the 40s. I want it to be completely realistic. Thanks!

For a woman living in America who is proud of her polish heritage this is very offensive to me. :( Just kidding, I wouldn't have ever been born if Polish people hadn't licked the ass of Americans to come here.

Life / Driving skills of drivers in Poland? [41]

and are Poles good drivers in general? I wouldn't think so, because they're generally book smart in less than useful things and not so good with technical stuff like driving. That's how I see the Polish in me, polish jokes are what made me realize this (I'm not trying to relive old stereotypes but they're true). I often find myself thinking I need to take a common sense class, because I'm already very book smart but I lack common sense that less educated people have.

When I was 15 I slammed the accelerator in reverse against a wall and ruined the bumper. I actually slammed the accelerator so hard it bounced off the edge. Haha, when I remember it, it makes me laugh so hard I cry. I thought I had put it in drive and was frustrated that it wasn't going forward so I slammed on the accelerator not thinking what I was doing. This was before drivers ed, so you can't really blame me exactly.

But anyway, I am intimidated by things like parallel parking, but my reactions are very quick and I'm a good highway driver. I can drive 80 and keep it straight, others that try to go that fast often zigzag around. I have a tendency to want to whip my car around tight curves and its always a contest with myself to see how smoothly I can go over it while still maintaining speed. Right of way at big intersections confuses me, and I often find myself being honked at because I'm too cautious (this I figure either has to do with being Polish or having a slight strain of dislexia in childhood).

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

call someone Anglik, means someone is very picky and hard to accommodate.

My sister in a nutshell. You can't get her a christmas present without her taking it back because there's always some little thing wrong with or that she changed her mind. You can get her the exact thing she wants and she will still end up taking it back. Lets, not even talk about food. With men she is ridiculous. she will stay single, sometimes for years until she finds somone she can't find anything wrong with.

Germans have got chaos in their head when they come for a visit to Warsaw and see thriving

haha yes but warsaw is a very ugly looking city nonetheless.

Lol the reason women like Sarah Jewsica Parker is because she reminds them that there is always someone uglier than them.

UK, Ireland / Do Poles in the UK pretend to be uppity because they have an inferiority complex? [60]

Uppity is a word spat in condescension. When someone wants to feel superior to another, they call them uppity. There's no such thing as "uppity". It's an artificial definition used by people who feel threatened and insecure.
I've heard and seen the word applied to all sorts of situations. Mostly to blacks and whites, hardly ever Mexicans or hispanics. It does seem to occur when discussing certain races.

In America, its a joke now and its a term not applied to any particular ethnicity. Lots of people use the word "uppity".

By posting this I only wanted to know if it was true that many are insecure with themselves or not. I always feel that extreme pride in oneself is due to insecurity, because I have experienced it myself and know what it feels like. When I see an eastern euro or any other prideful, smug, or person with a superiority complex that is withdrawn I know that they feel insecure in some way because they are really afraid they are inferior and are losers. When a person who really is intelligent has an ego that spins out of control and all of the sudden they believe they are a genius, there will be some insecurity because deep down inside the person really is aware that they are not a genius and they can't deal with it. They may treat other people like they are below them, and automatically assume people are idiots when they are not because of their insecurity just to convince themselves they're a genius. Usually very competitive people who want to impress other people are like this, because they feel they have to be on top of everyone else. They may even appear weak and shy, but deep down inside they want to have all the power. I admit, I suffer from this and it is truly a disease, but it is pretty easy for me to pick out someone with an inferiority complex because of it.

UK, Ireland / Do Poles in the UK pretend to be uppity because they have an inferiority complex? [60]

I have seen many posts on here about Poles being snooty towards the English and thinking they are superior ie. the thread about the UK born guy who couldn't be Polish enough for his "purist" Polish gf who was always being mean to him because of it. Is it because they are so used to scrounging around that when they come to the US or a western European country like the UK they don't know how to be? My father says that the eastern euros he has come across were all nasty and seemed to have inferiority complexes while germanic or western Europeans were friendly and sociable.

News / POLISH CHILD ABUSING A CAT.. [74]

A cat today..but in 15 years time it could be you they are beating to death..!

I don't believe people can be incarnated as animals. Not that I don't think animal abuse is bad, but I find that people don't need to worry about animal abuse as much as they do when there are humans in the world who are being abused. I am actually an animal lover, I have two dogs that sleep in my bed every night, and I love horses and even some cats but you have to draw the line somewhere, an animal is an animal and they are not as important as human beings.

But some animals are viscious, like bears for example. I am terribly afraid of bears *eek* I won't even take a hike in fear of meeting up with one. Just because you are stupid like an animal, doesn't mean the whole human race is stupid.

Off-Topic / I thought my house had ghosts, but according to a paranormal psychic it is hovering demon [30]

How you done any research, to verify if any former buildings or dwellings existed previously, on your current home property? Possibly these places may be sources of the strange activity...

I haven't done research on my own house, but I am guessing there was never anything previously, since they had to cut down many trees and refine the lot when it was first built. There is a very very old house a little bit down the road though where someone died on the kitchen table. I think it is about two centuries old and still somewhat intact. I researched and found that spirits can travel short distances, but what the lady told me is that ghosts aren't usually that aggressive (they don't usually harass one person and touch them unless they get in they are totally provoked, which I didn't do).

I hear plenty of stories on the news about ghost sightings, one of which wasn't recognized in a photograph until it was posted on facebook. I'm surely not the only one that believes in them and I've had enough experiences in other relatives' houses and my old one to know that they exist.

How do know what it feels like to have evil spirits around you unless you have a point of reference?

Well, I didn't actually think "evil spirits" I just know that I sensed it as a four and five year old child. Later when I was older and my dad mentioned that the house we used to live in was haunted, I remembered the strange feelings of creepiness and feeling like I was being watched all the time and not to mention the odd noises I would hear when I woke up in bed. I may just be very spiritually sensitive, which is what the paranormal lady told me.

In that movie they used classic examples of a demon trying to possess someone. I only thought it was haunted until that lady told me it sounded like a demon. I do not own any cats and I for sure know that all of the animals were in the garage and couldn't get upstairs. There are no heating vents like that near the door and I would doubt those could have even caused that sound.

Off-Topic / I thought my house had ghosts, but according to a paranormal psychic it is hovering demon [30]

Ok, this is going to sound a little silly, but its not a joke. First off, I know many Polish people will not deny that evil spirits/ghosts do exist because I have heard many on here talk about it and my dad, who is the one of Polish ethnicity in my family believes they exist too. That is why I have posted such a thread on this forum.

Throughout my life (especially in childhood), I have always felt like there were evil spirits all around me, which could be due to living in an old house that actually was haunted by ghosts when I was a very young child (doors slammed, strange unexplainable sounds/popping noises, disappearing objects). My mother said I would wake up screaming at almost the same time every night and that I had some sort of fear/intuition that something was there which carried on to the next house we moved into, a newly built one.

There were never any strange activities happening in the new house, until a couple of months ago. I never thought there might be ghosts, because we live in a newly built house until I started hearing scratching and very very strange sounds coming from the attic that were very hard to discern completely but almost sounded like voices. I know there is no way there could be vermin in the attic, it has been checked before and there has never been anything there. Plus there is no way for them to get up there. Then a couple of weeks later, I was in the dark living room with only the Christmas tree lights on and I walked to the other side of the room. As I walked, I felt this very strange sensation on my shoulder and then again on my head that I was being touched. I looked all around for anything that could have fallen on me and there was nothing. It was not subtle, it felt very strong and my stomack got a sick sensation and I experienced extreme chills. After that I could only think one thing, Ghosts! I was puzzled, because we live in a fairly new house but after doing a little research I found out that the house does not have to be old, ghosts can come around from antique items like pieces of furniture, which we have tons of.

After that incidence I second guessed myself and thought of myself as a nutcase but just last night, I was alone in the house around 8:00 PM. I was in the shower after working out and when I got out I dried myself off (lol) and then suddenly heard this loud thumping noise from the other side of the house (there were no pets around). I got chills, and felt like I was going to collapse, and then to my utter terror the locked bathroom door rattled and knocked as if something were putting pressure on it. After that I would not leave the bathroom of course and I waited in there for half an hour praying and in utter shock and terror until my parents got back (this thing apparently does not come around when other people are there).

So then I called up a psycic that deals with these sort of things and I explained the whole situation to her. She was very alarmed when she had heard everything, and told me that I may have a hovering demon and that they are very dangerous. She said that it may be beginning to play, and warned me not to tease it or anything with an oija board. Other than that she didn't really give much information that is very helpful. I asked someone else and they told me I should get baptized and start going to church every Sunday. I think this is good advice and I plan to follow it.

Can anyone offer advice or insight onto my situation?

Love / Polish women world's second most flirtatious [75]

So do you think I should brush up on my flirting style?

No, just be more understanding of women's cues. It is very frustrating to go on a date with a guy that has to be told everything and can't infer.
