Gas, nuclear (in ten years), renewables, geothermal, biomass (that one very very limited), hydro-electric (even if outmoded), insulating roof spaces for christs sake ( grants for the same), Scandinavian stoves in the home and any low temperature wood fires banned (pine is a dangerous carcinogen, evenmore so than the dreaded brown coal).

The only reason Poland burns coal domestically today is because the Health Service is cheap and by definition, crap . If you have respiratory disease or cancer that's fine by the Polish government because that means employment for the myriad of dinosaur cottage hospitals scattered around and a living for all the ancillary staff. The second reason is because it's "tradition to burn coal". Nothing to do with that old Polish politicians' excuse for doing nothing ........... "niestety........nie mamy pieniadze....... " (Excuse no Polish fonts, English OP..)

Both excuses are to be stamped on and I am looking forward to Brussels nailing the Poles for continuing to tolerate domestic use of coal - by refusing to grant bigger aid to households to employ different fuels and/or to introduce a carbon tax and/or prohibition.

The reduction in pulmonary disorders would pay for grants in savings to the Health Service - but as politics and priorities are so fukked up in Poland (or should I say - Silesia. where I live - at the moment) - I dont hold out much hope. Grr

Cigarette smoking impinges on the lives of those I care for - through passive smoking. And you ont need a Science degree to know that "seperate" smoking and non smoking areas are actully even more dangerous.

Outlaw the danger as in the UK - but also make smokers pay for their treatment themselves, I would expect if I need a new liver because of boozing.

Simples. Smoker need a big boot up the arse, and I would be happy to apply that boot - and told to shove off to their own property if thy want to pollute the air that we all share.

No Harry that is palpably not true. Give us statistics. Plenty of social think tanks have sat on this question and found that smokers who contract cancers are bleeding the NHS dry.

In a country like Britain that spends 11 per cent or more of it' GDP on the NHS that is one thing - but Poland, for some astonishing reason, spends FOUR per cent of GDP on it's NHS - and I dont want my tax wasted on smokers who bring their misfortune on themselves to some degree.

Of course in Poland the government are also guilty and provide very little help for people to quit. Still, it's down to personal choice and if anyone smokes ovr my dinner and refuses a polite request to knock it on the head they will risk my 53 year old fury :)) At the very least I will refuse to pay the bill because the estblishment is relinquishing it's health responsibility.

I drink. I try to stop for 4 to 5 months in the year both for professional and health reasons. It's called willpower.

If I get out of order on the drink I always endeavour to take myself off somewhere private. Smokers dont do this, and Poland has this nasty stinking acceptance of carcinogens.

What privat premises do you run? smoking is bnned in my schools through law, but my porter still does, and I tolerat it becasue it' t night and he's a cracking bloke and I wouldn't want to lose him.

But, public bar or restaurant, if somebody i blowing smoke in my direction, be it flash git or bimbo, I will ask them to refrain, and be prepared in the case of it being abloke to insist.

Your premises coul be private, but if they are open to the public then you have a duty to that client to take reasonble steps.

What about your staff and others who have no choice in the matter? Anyway, are you going to have a separate room for smokers, or just a separate space? The second option i even more dangerous, as said.

Of course I choose my bar sensibly, but I cant do that for my 18 year old non- smoker daughter. In the fun places, there is lot of smoke, and I worry about her health.

As you do about yours'. Are you suggesting there is no danger - and that 18 year olds either realise or care?

I fail to see though whre the two figures are united by context though Harry. We, the UK, spend billions on a nuclear deterrent, and it's money well spent, but we haven't had a nuclear war.

Conversely, money spent on cancer therapy doesn't equate in any way to the revenues raised on smoking.

I'm a bit pissed now ( at home, being pleasant to my loving family, not spoiling anyone elses' enjoyment either) which is probably why I cant see the excuse for smokers saying - " I've got cancer caused by my smoking - please help me NHS - it's my right - because I paid a lot of money in".

Ww've all had this debate about smokers vs fatties. Two wrongs dont make a right.

My missus was nearly wiped out by a black car driver doing 200 on Chorzowska in Katowice on Tuesday who lost control of his car, leaving her a hospital case and requiring tranquilisers.

If I had been there I would have dragged him from his car and beaten him within an inch of his life, no doubt about it, as his type are above the law.

I would have been banged up, as we all have to pay for our actions. Personal weaknesses such as over-indulging and expecting the State to rescue us, should be the same.

Harry in his desperation is trying to label me a fatty because I booze. Due to a mtb accident I dont do sports anymore but at 6 ft plus and 86 kilos i wouldn't call that fat. Beer gut - yes.

I agree about fat people who cant control their habit not being funded - but I agree with certain NHS trusts who challenge their obligation to provide expensive cancer treatment to smokers.

I could quote plenty of staistics that have a contary ( and probably equally skewed) viewpoint to the criteria of the BBC article.

My position is that passive smoking kills and I dont need the Britih Medical ouncil or it's Polish equivalent to tell me that simple truth, when I return from a booze with my clothes stinking and with a smokers' cough.

Luckily Katowice is an up and coming area and they recognise the danger,s and most bars that I frequent have taken radical steps already.
