History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

In the context of WWII there will always be a problem.
Communists were the enemies of the Nazis, the allies of the victors...Stalin the chum of Roosevelt and Churchill.

I would be glad actually if historians could agree at last that there is no one-history-to-fit-all, that for some Stalinism was worse than Nazism and that for some Nazism was the worst of all.

It's still a long way to go...

It's not the point that Jews play up their suffering, but that we fail to do the same

The world can only bear ONE "the worst suffering victims of all time"...(you will have to make it out between you)!

Heh:) Your baby is half Kraut...it will be smart, prefers to drive fast and get a moustache soon (better if it's a boy in that case)! :)

PS: If your wife's grandparents and parents were full Krauts that makes her a full Kraut too, not only 1/8 part..

It's nice to attempt to see the objective truth.

But not as much fun....

learn polish and ill send you some interviews with the veterans. one of em was in Rommels Panzer Division.

Doesn't matter...there were no Poles in the Wehrmacht as the Wehrmacht was the official forces of Germany.
They were german nationals, or Volksdeutsche....get that into your thick head!

Just a question: In another thread you seem to be proud that Poles never forgot their "polishness" even during the partitions living officially as Prussians, Russians or Austrians.

Do you really believe it was different with the millions of Germans who found themselves now in new-Poland???

and don't forget WW1, where the intervention of US led to a speedier defeat of the axis powers and the re-establishment of a Polish state.

Well, historians say that without the meddling of the US Germany would had won the great war...hence no WWII, no Nazis, no Holocaust, no Hitler....so yes, let's not forget the US in this!

(but at least Poland was re-established and that's the main thing, isn't it!)

my cousin is writing a book about Polish soldiers from 1st Polish Armoured Division who were Wermacht soldiers before.

Should be interesting as there were no Poles in the Wehrmacht....

BB, can you shed some light on this?

I'm wondering myself because it's a rather famous quote but when I google it I find only the repititions of this saying but no real source...

Somehow wikipedia is awfully slow for Europeans right now...It keeps crashing

"I have given orders to my Death Units to exterminate without mercy or pity, men, women, and children belonging to the Polish speaking race. It is only in this manner we can acquire the vital territory which we need. After all, who remembers the extermination of the Armenians?" - Adolf Hitler, 22 August 1939

Do you have a source for this quote actually?
I only find this saying but not the original source....

I think it's natural...and actually I think that sometimes forgetting (or at least not talking it to death) is often better for relationships as it helps to overcome old grudges.

In some places people argue and are ready to fight again over things 1000 years old...so much for remembering!

You can't let people forget.

People will forget as it is natural...don't tell me you know all about the last 2000 years of human history world wide, or even european history!

That's more a passion of dedicated historians but not for the common people as they have their current lives to worry about.

But even remembering it has never stopped another evil!

If you don't continuously get the truth out there, people forget about mass murders such as the 20 million Russians who were murdered.

It's not about truth but that the 21th century with all it's bloodshed is becoming history soon.
Already WWI is sinking into the past with the last witness dying last year. WWII is already for most only a thing from the school books.

Tell me about the thirty years war.... see??? I gather you don't know much about it because you only heard of it in school (probably) and it bored you but this war was percentual more destructive to Europe than WWII.

It's not about uncovering some conspiracy to hide the "truth" about the mass murders in WWII, as the facts are already known...but that most people are just no longer interested.

In a recent BBC survey they found out that many british kids have no idea about Hitler or WWII....and that even as WWII and Nazi Germany is one of the most teached topics in british schools - but most kids just don't care, it's dead history to them.

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1225549/Hitler-coached-Germanys-football-team-McDonalds-arches-symbolise-remembrance-day-What-todays-children.html

So....your fight to drive some truth home is a fight against wind mills!

Adolf Hitler was Germany's football team manager, according to youngsters aged nine to 15.

One in 20 thought the Holocaust was the celebration at the end of the war and one in ten said the SS was Enid Blyton's Secret Seven, not Hitler's personal bodyguards.

And one in 12 said The Blitz was a massive clean-up operation in Europe after World War Two.

Yeah...why should he change a story he kept alive for more than 50 years now?
Do you think that would endear him to patriotic Poles like you???

Get real man!

All this "the big bad mean Germans made me do it" was an Europe-wide mantra.....after the war was over that is ("Victory has many fathers - Defeat is an orphan"!).

Really astounding that the german forces got one step over the border at all dragging all these unwilling, forced, secretly hostile soldiers with them!

Grass was a German from Gdańsk - if he had been Kashubian he would have
spoken Kashubian or Polish (very similar languages) not German as he did.

Well, he was a German of Kashubian roots....eligible for the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS, as thousands others!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashubians#Notable_Kashubians

Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg (1759-1830) Prussian Field Marshal of the Napoleonic era

Günter Grass (1927- ) Nobel Prize-winning German author of Kashubian descent

I have no reason to dibelief my neighbours

Not even that if he had told the truth that this would had meant in afterwar Poland misery/expellation/gulag/death for him and his family?

Some Germans :-)

Well, nobody forced them so subscribe to the Volksliste as Germans....their decision!

Because I know quite a few,
and I've heard the stories of them and their families

Yeah, that's exactly the problem...if the Nazis had won they would had told stories how brave
they fought against the opressing Poles and how they suffered under polish rule.
(Seriously, what do you expect people to say who wanted to survive in Poland as the Germans left? The truth????)

Truth was that nobody was forced or beaten to subscribe...and you had to bring some evidence about your roots.

Be careful with what people told AFTER the war was over....Europe then was suddenly full of victims and resisters - no Nazi or collaborateur in sight anymore!

One famous Kashubian everybody knows is Günther Grass....who ended the war in the Waffen-SS as German...

Polish soldiers of Wehrmacht

If you mean german soldiers of the german Wehrmacht coming from german towns and villages in what became Poland after the Treaty of Versailles you are quite wrong. They fighted as well or bad as all Germans did...

With the Osttruppen or eastern volunteers it was more like it...

Generally it can be said, Germans or western volunteers served with distinction - eastern troops did not.

(I'm right now reading "Blood and Iron", Manstein's campaign of Sevastopol in '42 - he had german troops and romanians...boy were they bad (the Romanians)! )

So the 89,300 Harry quoted were not volunteers and I rest my case well argued by you. :)

Agreed, but neither were they Poles (at the time of their conscription that is, regardless what they later told at gunpoint as POWs as some of them were offered to survive if they "desert" and join the polish forces next)

So, if we go by this criteria, than the "volunteers" in Werhmaht were not Poles either.

Again:

Volunteers (Germans and Foreigners): Waffen-SS (or Ost-truppen like ROA)

Conscripts (Germans only): Wehrmacht

It's that easy, really! ;)
