History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

Only if it says what you want to hear, it's reliable, is that right? :)

Noooo. I have no problems with dealing with things which I prefer not to hear :P Of course there are experts on Wiki but usually they sink in the sea of crap ;) That's why I prefer books.

I am sure that many wished they were dead.

I have nothing more to say :) Especially if I have some eggs to paint (I'm not joking...) and I see you are an "essay man" so I agree with everything you say in advance :P

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

While there are many examples of Polish support and help for the Jews during World War II and the Holocaust, there are also numerous examples of anti-Semitic incidents, and the Jewish population was certain of the indifference towards their fate from the Christian Poles.

First of all I don't consider Wikipedia as a reliable source because EVERYONE CAN WRITE AN ARTICLE THERE :)
As Vetala said there's a huge difference between not liking people and wishing them to die. Of course there was an examples of helping Jews. But see the difference between generalization and enumerating such examples one by one. Generally in press (which can be treat as authoritative reflection of people's way of thinking) there was a lot of anti-semitism incidents.

In the aftermath of the Deluge and Chmielnicki Uprising, many Jews fled to the less turbulent Netherlands, which had granted the Jews a protective charter in 1619

What it means "many" ? In XVII century Poland was the biggest country in Europe (as historians say from sea to sea - from Baltic Sea to Black Sea) and what you are talking about has happened on Polish eastern borders. So I understand that Jews from east escaped from there but it doesn't mean it was some kind of exodus from Poland :)

On one hand it prides me that my little country

Yep, if all Jews from Poland escaped to Holland, your country would be far far too little ;)

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

I'm not talking about the whole history of Jews in Poland. For centuries (especially in XVII) Poland was the most tolerant country in Europe when the shelter could find not only Jews but Arians, Lutherans or Calvinists. But in 30's the increase of anti-semitism was huge. I have something about 10 yearbooks of popular polish newspapers from 34-39 with jokes about Jews. And believe me, they stink of anti-semitism for a mile. My friend showed me few of anti-semitism leaflets which were distributed on streets in 30's.

You are right that for many centuries Poland was some kind of paradise for Jews but in 30's this paradise was definitely over.

Help me out here, is it ironic that Jews were dying at Auschwitz at the time of Jedwabne?

No. Ironic was the way I said it...

A great post, sht. I don't like Poland being made out to be the scapegoat when they did their part in their own way. You are citing rational sources, others just lash out through emotion.

Most of Pole like to be a scapegoat.
It's funny because it the same time when this post was made Russian TV showed Andrzej Wajda's "Katyn". So in the same time when Russians admit that massacre in Katyn was Russian fault, most of Poles deny their own murders. Thanks God it's not the opinion of historians.

Ironside: The point is that Poles were killed by Jews and nobody seems to care

Where ? When ? By who ? Facts please :)

Ironside: and secondly in how many cases Jews were killed because their were Jews, not for other reasons ?

What are you suggesting ? That Jews in Jedwabne were killed because of other reasons than religion ? In some way yes. Imagine you are one of citizen of Jedwabne. Your neighbor, Jew let say Levi, has a big house and land. So what will happen if you will kill Levi. The answer was: nothing. Because nobody cared about few Jews when million of them were dieing in Auschwitz. It sad but true but Jews in Jedwabne were killed only because of greed.

Bratwurst Boy: ???

I meant your reaction was very predictable.

Bratwurst Boy: I don't believe the demonization of the german troops anymore either

We don't "demonization" your german troops, we know you will always be Nazis ;) (just kidding, don't bite)
In Polish press and public discussion there's no such thing like "scrambling history wounds" but actually we have problem with your "expellees". So for average Pole Erika Steinbach is far more interesting than Hitler :)

Bratwurst Boy: Oh please!

Yes.... I was waiting for that post from you. It's like bait for the fish. Somebody says "Poles didn't kill the Jews" and BB will always swim up and swallow the bait :P

If you have time and patience you can read about 120 cities and villages where Jews were killed by Poles. You can find it in IPN archives :) We have it in our history books at schools next to the description about the massacre in Jedwabne. So enjoy the lecture :P ;)

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

nomaderol: They weren't assimilated cause actually they were/are not religious (not Jews really and they aren't semities like Sephardins.) You can't expect a nonreligious to become a Christian or religious. Assimilation in any culture is possible only and only in nonreligious environment in that religions can be considered like hobby only.

Nomaderol ... I didn't talk about assimilated Jews because this is obvious that if you want to be assimilated Jew in country like Poland you can't be an orthodox. Most of assimilated Jews lived in big cities but most of Jews in Poland in that days lived in small cities and villages. And they were far away from assimilation.

nomaderol: aren't semities like Sephardins

"Semites" is an anthropological expression and has nothing to do with religion.

vetala: Please, remember that In REAL LIFE there are no extremes like 'bed of roses' or 'hell on earth'.

I don't understand. You think that Aushwitz wasn't a hell on earth for those Jews ? Or maybe Aushwitz wasn't real life ? Just asking.

SeanBM: Did Hitler actually kill any Jews himself at all, I mean personally? If he did, did he kill any in Poland?

He never killed anyone. Even during the IWW when he was a soldier.

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

nomaderol: Ashkenazi Jews have never been religious really.

I had magisterium about wooden synagogues in Poland and Jewish polychrome paintings and I have to say that Aszkenazi's Jews weren's so open and assimilated as their Sefardians friends from western Europe. In their beliefs and religious life most of them were very traditional. But this is not a conversation for this thread :)

nomaderol: But, poor Poland, it missed this chance by deporting Jews

I agree. It was a mistake. After the war most of Jews which survived didn't want to live here and see the places of executions every day. And the rest of them were deported (or banished) in 68...

Seanus: I wouldn't say that Poland had a particularly developed transport network overall

Our train network was the most expanded in Europe, especially in western Poland. Of course now we have PKP and you can forget about this ;)

Wawel: I do not buy the theory that it is because Poles are anti-semitic

But you have to agree that Poles were anti-semitic before the war.

Your theory is very reliable.

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

Wroclaw Boy: Was it because they flourished in business?

No.

Wroclaw Boy: Was it because they had power in central Europe?

No.

Wroclaw Boy: Was it because they (so called) murdered Christ?

No.

Wroclaw Boy: Was it personal vendetta?

In some way.

It's very helpful to have a scapegoat when you are a populist like Hitler. Jews hadn't any power in Central Europe, especially in Poland when we had Aszkenazi's Jews (very religious and orthodox). The reason why Hitler picked up Jews instead of Poles or Frenchs was the Jews were very "visible" in social life. Before the war nearly 30 % of Polish people weren't actually Polish. Can you imagine? They were mostly Jews, Ukrainians, Germans, Russians or they came from some ethnic minorities like Kaszebians, Silesians, Mazurians, Lemkows etc.

It's sad but the idea of Holocaust came from sick mind of one man.

I don't want to insult you but don't you have some history books in country you come from ?

Soup from nails = soup from nothing. It's a compliment for a very good cook :)

News / Did you know that Polish army is the weakest in Central Europe?.. [150]

Yeah...in 1 week in Moscow AND Berlin!!! ;)

Actually we have been in Moscow already and we didn't need tanks. After the death of Ivan IV Poles went to Moscow and said that they have found the lost son of Ivan. And ... they believed us (!). So some Polish yokel really has been the tzar of Russia for a few weeks. Now one of the most important day in Russia is the day of expel Poles from Moscow :))

Life / Proper dose of life in Poland... the harsh realities. [64]

i dont like to witness injustices and i see a lot of it around here.

Did you know that 1/3 of Polish employees work on 2/3 of Polish people which are unemployed (pensioners, privileged groups, unemployed) ? This IS the most unjust society in Europe.

But I have one question. Every time I see you, you moan. Is that makes you feel better ?

Travel / Best Easter Eggs in Warsaw? [9]

You have to wait till March and then you can buy it in supermarkets. But don't expect there will be real chocolate eggs like you say. They will be rather smaller and just chocolate without filling. Sorry in Poland we prefer real eggs with glair and yolk ;)

Life / Who's the best looking (and acting/singing) celebrity in Poland? [32]

Oh, but it's natural for the first lady. In fact it's her obligation. On the other hand it's very difficult when some people compair her to Jolanta Kwasniewska: younger, nicer, etc.

I can't say I like her but I respect her. She has hard role to play, especially with weird family ;)
